Phoenix, cunoscută în Occident ca Transsylvania-Phoenix, este o formație românească de muzică rock, înființată în 1962, la Timișoara.
Phoenix a fost deschizătoare de drumuri în muzica adresată publicului larg în România celei de a doua jumătăți a secolului XX. Membrii formației au abordat numeroase subgenuri ale rock-ului; traseul stilistic al formației a pornit de la muzică beat, evoluând spre rock psihedelic și de aici către hard rock, cu un număr de experimente de rock progresiv. În anii 1970, efectele schimbărilor politice din țară asupra vieții culturale au adus la destrămarea multor formații de gen. Între cele care au continuat prin adoptarea unui stil nou, Phoenix a avut una dintre cele mai neașteptate evoluții, dând naștere subgenului rock numit etno rock (inspirat din folclorul românesc autentic, comparabil cu celtic rock-ul inițiat de formația irlandeză Horslips cam în aceeași perioadă)

Located in the far Western part of Romania, Timisoara is the 3rd biggest city in the country and an easy drive from Brasov. I went to Timisoara to explore the city and check out what it had to offer. I only was able to spend one night, which definitely wasn't enough time, so I plan to head back in the future.
Unfortunately, as you'll probably notice in the video, many of the monuments and areas in the Old Town were under construction. This is because Timisoara is one of the many cities in Romania that's a candidate to become the European Capital of Culture in 2021.
Many tourists to Romania tend to stick to the more popular cities like Brasov or Bucharest but I think that TImisoara deserves a spot on the best places to see in the country. It was full of grand, impressive and lovely architecture and it has quite an interesting and culturally rich history.
First mentioned in the 13th century, Timisoara was, and still is, the capital of the historic Banat region. This is a historical region covering large parts of Romania, Serbia and Hungary and you'll notice a lot of visitors from these countries when you're in Timisoara. Many of the signs have both the Hungarian and Romanian spelling of destinations and there are countless Serbian license plates around.
The things I loved most about Timisoara were the Old Town pedestrian walking area, all of the squares and the impressive Orthodox Cathedral. It was great to be able to walk around and take everything in without having to worry about cars and busses. The city center was quiet and, outside of the main square, void of any tourists.

If you're visiting Romania for more than a few days I highly recommend you check out Timisoara. It's an easy drive from Brasov and there are trains and buses available from both Brasov and Bucharest for a fair price.

This video shows me and a friend climbing the tallest structure (chimney) in Timisoara!
It is well among the tallest structures in Romania, rising to over 200 meters.
The chimney has an umbrella-like structure of metal beams at the top.
We slept in hammocks over night on the very top and admired the great gig in the sky.
The only light we had was coming from a beautiful summer Full-Moon.
Please understand that by doing this you put yourself/others in danger and legal risks!
Note: for the best experience of this clip use high brightness and turn the volume up!

Timișoara (Romanian pronunciation: [timiˈʃo̯ara]; German: Temeswar, also formerly Temeschburg or Temeschwar; Hungarian: Temesvár, Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈtɛmɛʃvaːr]; Yiddish: טעמשוואר; Serbian: Темишвар/Temišvar; Banat Bulgarian: Timišvár; Turkish: Temeşvar) is the capital city of Timiș County, and the main social, economic and cultural centre in western Romania.
One of the largest Romanian cities (the third most populous city in the country, as of 2011 census), with a population of 319,279 inhabitants, Timișoara is considered the informal capital city of the historical region of Banat. The city is a candidate to become the 2021 European Capital of Culture.
History
Middle Ages
Timișoara was first mentioned as a place in either 1212 or 1266 as Castrum Temesiense. The territory later to be known as Banat was conquered and annexed by the Kingdom of Hungary in 1030. Timișoara grew considerably during the reign of Charles I, who, upon his visit here in 1307, ordered the construction of a royal palace. Timișoara's importance also grew due to its strategic location, which facilitated control over the Banat plain. By the middle of the 14th century, Timișoara was at the forefront of Western Christendom's battle against the Muslim Ottoman Turks. French and Hungarian crusaders met at the city before engaging in the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396. Beginning in 1443, John Hunyadi used Timișoara as a military stronghold against the Turks, having built a powerful fortress. The city was repeatedly sieged by the Ottomans in 1462, 1476, 1491, and 1522.

Located in the far Western part of Romania, Timisoara is the 3rd biggest city in the country and an easy drive from Brasov. I went to Timisoara to explore the city and check out what it had to offer. I only was able to spend one night, which definitely wasn't enough time, so I plan to head back in the future. Unfortunately, as you'll probably notice in the video, many of the monuments and areas in the Old Town were under construction. This is because Timisoara is one of the many cities in Romania that's a candidate to become the European Capital of Culture in 2021. Hammock on huge chimney in Timisoara
DISCLAIMER!!! This video shows me and a friend climbing the tallest structure (chimney) in Timisoara! It is well among the tallest structures in Romania, rising to over 200 meters. The chimney has an umbrella-like structure of metal beams at the top. We slept in hammocks over night on the very top and admired the great gig in the sky. The only light we had was coming from a beautiful summer Full-Moon. Please understand that by doing this you put yourself/others in danger and legal risks! Unfortunately, as you'll probably notice in the video, many of the monuments and areas in the Old Town were under construction. This is because Timisoara is one of the many cities in Romania that's a candidate to become the European Capital of Culture in 2021.
Many tourists to Romania tend to stick to the more popular cities like Brasov or Bucharest but I think that TImisoara deserves a spot on the best places to see in the country. It was full of grand, impressive and lovely architecture and it has quite an interesting and culturally rich history.
First mentioned in the 13th century, Timisoara was, and still is, the capital of the historic Banat region. This is a historical region covering large parts of Romania, Serbia and Hungary and you'll notice a lot of visitors from these countries when you're in Timisoara. Many of the signs have both the Hungarian and Romanian spelling of destinations and there are countless Serbian license plates around.
The things I loved most about Timisoara were the Old Town pedestrian walking area, all of the squares and the impressive Orthodox Cathedral. It was great to be able to walk around and take everything in without having to worry about cars and busses. The city center was quiet and, outside of the main square, void of any tourists.

If you're visiting Romania for more than a few days I highly recommend you check out Timisoara. It's an easy drive from Brasov and there are trains and buses available from both Brasov and Bucharest for a fair price.
