Nelson Ackerman Eddy (June 29, 1901 – March 6, 1967) was an American singer and actor who appeared in 19 musical films during the 1930s and 1940s, as well as in opera and on the concert stage, radio, television, and in nightclubs. A classically trained baritone, he is best remembered for the eight films in which he costarred with soprano Jeanette MacDonald. He was one of the first "crossover" stars, a superstar appealing both to shrieking bobby soxers as well as opera purists, and in his heyday, he was the highest paid singer in the world.
During his 40-year career, he earned three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (one each for film, recording, and radio), left his footprints in the wet cement at Grauman's Chinese Theater, earned three Gold records, and was invited to sing at the third inauguration of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941. He also introduced millions of young Americans to classical music and inspired many of them to pursue a musical career.

Plot: Harry Williams, member of the rhythm & blues band, Bloodstone, is about to go onstage for a concert when he is hit on the head. The rest that follows is his dream. The four band members become conductors on a train filled with characters and (impersonated) actors from the 1930s, such as W.C. Fields, Dracula, and Scarlett O'Hara. Various songs are featured. The singing conductors are obliged to solve a mystery; Marlon Brando is murdering Nelson Eddy, Jeanette McDonald and others by suffocating them in his armpits. A wacky funeral, a fight with a gorilla, and the threat of being turned into a wax museum figure are all part of Harry's dream.

Featuring a traditional Russian song from Nelson's 1939 movie 'Balalaika'.
Recorded December 31, 1935. From the operetta of the same name. Slim Whitman had a big hit with a remake of this song in 1955 charting at #4 on the Billboard Country chart and #1 in the UK. B-side is "The Mounties".
Set your clocks back to 1939 as Nelson Eddy sings At the Balalaika from his film Balalaika also starring Ilona Massey. Afterwards, we leave the movie house for the local skating rink, where the theme song is reprised on the organ as folks, "skate their dates" to the lively tune. This video is dedicated to my mother who loved to skate and loved the movies...this was her era.

In this third "Master Class" written by Madeline Bayless and presented by Linda Tolman, little-known details are revealed of the funeral of 1930s movie star Jeanette MacDonald. MacDonald died on January 14, 1965 and her death made front page headlines in newspapers worldwide. Thousands of loyal fans attended her funeral four days later at Forest Lawn Glendale. Despite her supposedly loving last words to her husband Gene Raymond, many fan were curious to note that her grief-stricken co-star Nelson Eddy sat privately with the family and in particular with Jeanette's older sister and confidant Blossom Rock. (Note: in the funeral service and on Jeanette's crypt her birthdate was incorrectly noted as 1907 rather than 1903.) For more information and to see actual funeral footage of Nelson Eddy a...

Woody IV who was in attendance comes to the mic to thank the fans. Then come the research presentations including the original handwritten letter Nelson wrote Jeanette on Christmas 1935 calling her an "extravagant wretchess" and stating, "I love you and will always be devoted to you." Pages from Jeanette's 1963 desk diary are also shown, revealing in her own writing the level of neglect and verbal abuse she suffered dur...
In the fifth "Master Class" presentation written by Madeline Bayless and read by Linda Tolman, details and photographs are revealed of the Beverly Hills hideaway home on Angelo Drive that Nelson Eddy leased for himself and Jeanette MacDonald. We already had access to mid 1940s letters written by Nelson's mother, Isabel Eddy, describing the place and the renovations in great detail, when both Nelson and Jeanette were spending time there. (These letters are transcribed in the biography "Sweethearts" by Sharon Rich.) Madeline Bayless, daughter of Capitol Records co-founder and executive, reveals that she visited "Mists" (as it was called in the letters) several times with her dad during those years. James Bayless worked at MGM in the sound department when Nelson Eddy arrived in 1933. Always p...
