The Science Museum of Virginia is a science museum located in Richmond, Virginia. Established in 1970, it is an agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is housed in the former Broad Street Station, built in 1919.
In 1906, the Virginia General Assembly approved funds for the construction of a simple "exhibits center" to display mineral and timber exhibits being assembled for the Jamestown Exposition of 1907. After the exposition ended, many of the items were moved to Richmond's Capitol Square. The "State Museum", as it came to be known, opened in 1910 and over the years displays of natural history specimens from a variety of State agencies were added to its collection.
In 1942, the General Assembly created a study commission to consider the establishment of an official State science museum, and in 1943, that commission strongly endorsed the creation of a "Virginia Museum of Science". Unfortunately, the fiscal restraints and pressing concerns of World War II, and the recession which followed it, prevented the General Assembly from taking further action, and in 1946, the General Assembly suspended further work on a State science museum pending the identification of appropriate space and funds.
A science museum is a museum devoted primarily to science. Older science museums tended to concentrate on static displays of objects related to natural history, paleontology, geology, industry and industrial machinery, etc. Modern trends in museology have broadened the range of subject matter and introduced many interactive exhibits. Many if not most modern science museums — which increasingly refer to themselves as "science centers" or "discovery centers" — also emphasize technology, and are therefore also technology museums.
The mission statements of science centers and modern museums vary, but they are united in being places that make science accessible and encourage the excitement of discovery. They are an integral and dynamic part of the learning environment, promoting exploration from the first "Eureka!" moment to today's cutting-edge research. However, the negative impacts of science and technology, or the uneven development of its various disciplines, may or may not be explored by some organizations.

Virginia (i/vərˈdʒɪnjə/ vər-JIN-yə, UK /vərˈdʒɪniə/ vər-JIN-ee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state located in the South Atlantic region of the United States. Virginia is nicknamed the "Old Dominion" due to its status as the first colonial possession established in mainland British America, and "Mother of Presidents" because eight U.S. presidents were born there, more than any other state. The geography and climate of the Commonwealth are shaped by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, which provide habitat for much of its flora and fauna. The capital of the Commonwealth is Richmond; Virginia Beach is the most populous city, and Fairfax County is the most populous political subdivision. The Commonwealth's estimated population as of 2014 is over 8.3 million.
The area's history begins with several indigenous groups, including the Powhatan. In 1607 the London Company established the Colony of Virginia as the first permanent New World English colony. Slave labor and the land acquired from displaced Native American tribes each played a significant role in the colony's early politics and plantation economy. Virginia was one of the 13 Colonies in the American Revolution and joined the Confederacy in the American Civil War, during which Richmond was made the Confederate capital and Virginia's northwestern counties seceded to form the state of West Virginia. Although the Commonwealth was under one-party rule for nearly a century following Reconstruction, both major national parties are competitive in modern Virginia.
A museum (/mjuˈziːəm/; myoo-zee-um) is an institution that cares for (conserves) a collection of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific importance and makes them available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary. Most large museums are located in major cities throughout the world and more local ones exist in smaller cities, towns and even the countryside. Museums have varying aims, ranging from serving researchers and specialists to serving the general public. The goal of serving researchers is increasingly shifting to serving the general public.
Some of the most attended museums include the Louvre in Paris, the National Museum of China in Beijing, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the British Museum in London, the National Gallery in London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. There are many types of museums, including art museums, natural history museums, science museums, war museums and children's museums.

Amy Steward’s exhibition, “Wicked Plants,” recently opened at the Science Museum of Virginia, and features plants that smell, plants that explode and plants that even kill. Virginia has a couple of dozen plants in her rogues gallery of wicked plants, some in your garden, some on your table, some in your house. Companies large and small trust us to capture images that don’t just show the before and after, but the entire process. Once captured, Richmond Time Lapse edits the footage into dynamic time lapse video presentations. Richmond Time Lapse was there as WM Jordan planned their exciting move of Richmond’s SR-71 Cold War spy plane. The aircraft will move to its new home at the Science Museum of Virginia in early 2016. Time lapse captures your company’s big moments, creating short videos that are perfect for marketing and promotion, websites, trade shows and your social media platforms. Relentless downpours soaked south Louisiana in August 2016. In some places, like Baton Rouge, the torrential rains dumped as much as 30 inches of rain in only a few days. This historic flooding claimed 13 lives and damaged over 60,000 homes. Because this storm system was so unique in its strength, this extreme event needed scientific exploring. Using computers to simulate how likely and how strong this event would have been last century (before human-caused climate changes), NOAA scientists have determined that the Louisiana downpours were made up to 40% more likely due to human-caused climate changes. Further investigation by other scientists identified that this event was also made about 20% stronger due to human-caused climate changes. Find out more about this in our animation!
Flash Mob that occurred at Richmond, Virginia's Science Museum. This was shot close range rather than from above as most flash mob scenes are depicted, so makes for an interesting view. Disclaimer* I do not own the music or any copy righted material that may be show within this video
They already have the largest movie screen in the state and last month they reworked it. There are 5 projectors spread around the dome and you can see 2 of them down front (look for the example in the video). I got a chance to chat with Justin Bartel about the new system (with 40 computer servers to power it) and what he likes about it.

A visit to The Science Museum of Virginia, with my old friend, and Richmond Tour Meister, Don. This building was formerly the Union Train Station (c. 1912) and was inspired by the ancient Baths of Caracalla in Rome (although that complex was much larger and grander). The main entrance does give some idea of the scale of the Baths of Caracalla. The Museum does not contain many exhibits, being mainly slanted towards children and school tours. But it does have a very interesting large interior projection suspended globe which can show real-time movies, taken from satellite imagery, of Earth weather, ocean currents and temperatures, the Sun and (my favorite) Mars. Shown are the hurricane patterns of 2005 and the progress of H. Katrina. The complex has a domed Imax theatre for travel, nat...
