Midlothian (/mɪdˈloʊðiən/; Scots: Midlowden, Scottish Gaelic: Meadhan Lodainn) is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland. It borders the City of Edinburgh, East Lothian and the Scottish Borders council areas.
Midlothian was also the name of a historic county formed in the Middle Ages. The county included Edinburgh, and was formerly known as Edinburghshire, or more formally as the County of Edinburgh until 1890. The historic county remains a lieutenancy area and a registration county for which purposes Edinburgh is included.
Midlothian Council area was created in 1996, under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, with the boundaries of the Midlothian district of the Lothian region. The district had been created in 1975, under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973, and it consisted of the local government county of Midlothian, minus the burgh of Musselburgh with the areas of Inveresk, Wallyford and Whitecraig being lost to East Lothian, the Calders (East Calder, Midcalder and West Calder) and the Midlothian part of Livingston to West Lothian, the electoral division of Heriot and Stow to the Ettrick and Lauderdale district of Borders Region, and Currie, Balerno, Ratho and Newbridge to Edinburgh.
Midlothian (/mɪdˈloʊθiən/) is an unincorporated community in Chesterfield County, Virginia, and in Powhatan County, Virginia. Founded over 300 years ago as a coal mining village, it is now a suburban community located west of Richmond, Virginia and South of the James River in the Richmond–Petersburg region.
It was named for the early 18th-century coal mining enterprises of the Wooldridge brothers, who came from mining villages in the counties of East and West Lothian in Scotland. They called their new venture Mid-Lothian and produced the first commercially mined coal in the Virginia Colony and in what became the United States.
By the early 18th century, several mines were being developed by French Huguenots and others. The mine owners began to export the commodity from the region in the 1730s. Midlothian-area coal heated the U.S. White House for President Thomas Jefferson. The transportation needs of coal shipping stimulated construction of an early toll road, the Manchester Turnpike in 1807; and the Chesterfield Railroad, the state's first in 1831; each to travel the 13 miles from the mining community to the port of Manchester, just below the fall line of the James River.
Virginia (i/vərˈdʒɪnjə/ vər-JIN-yə, UK /vərˈdʒɪniə/ vər-JIN-ee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state located in the South Atlantic region of the United States. Virginia is nicknamed the "Old Dominion" due to its status as the first colonial possession established in mainland British America, and "Mother of Presidents" because eight U.S. presidents were born there, more than any other state. The geography and climate of the Commonwealth are shaped by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, which provide habitat for much of its flora and fauna. The capital of the Commonwealth is Richmond; Virginia Beach is the most populous city, and Fairfax County is the most populous political subdivision. The Commonwealth's estimated population as of 2014 is over 8.3 million.
The area's history begins with several indigenous groups, including the Powhatan. In 1607 the London Company established the Colony of Virginia as the first permanent New World English colony. Slave labor and the land acquired from displaced Native American tribes each played a significant role in the colony's early politics and plantation economy. Virginia was one of the 13 Colonies in the American Revolution and joined the Confederacy in the American Civil War, during which Richmond was made the Confederate capital and Virginia's northwestern counties seceded to form the state of West Virginia. Although the Commonwealth was under one-party rule for nearly a century following Reconstruction, both major national parties are competitive in modern Virginia.

With a history that predates the written record, covered in ruins from another time, and decorated with more "modern" castles and estates, Scotland is a land fit for fairytales. It's beautiful and enchanting. This is particularly true of the country's South East, the regions of Midlothian and the Scottish Borders that sit between Edinburgh and the border with England. This film lovingly captures the allure South East Scotland has on the imagination -- emerald hills flanking stone fortresses, mist-filled forests crisscrossed with ancient trails ready for exploring. It doesn't seem real, but here's the thing: Scotland and its mountains, castles, and villages are very much real and easy to visit. Check out the video above and start planning your dream trip to Scotland. LEARN MORE about Sout...

Jordan is one of those places that most Americans know nothing about. We remember that it was in the Bible, and we *think* that the one scene from "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" was shot there, but that's about all we have. We also have a vague notion that Jordan, and the Middle East as a whole, really isn't a great place for women travelers. Kara Mercer wouldn't agree. She took a trip along the Jordan Trail, and what she discovered was not hostility, but a staggering hospitality. The video she captured is downright breathtaking. Her trip took her out into the desert, where she was hosted by a Bedouin family. She rode camels over the dunes to the famous Wadi Rum wilderness and the Petra UNESCO World Heritage Site. She mingled with artists and fashionistas in the country's cosmopoli...
