Major Lewis Ginter (April 24, 1824 – October 1, 1897) was a prominent businessman, military officer, real estate developer, and philanthropist centered in Richmond, Virginia. A native of New York City, Ginter accumulated a considerable fortune throughout his numerous business ventures and became Richmond’s wealthiest citizen despite his exceptionally modest demeanor. While the Jefferson Hotel, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, and Ginter Park embody some of Ginter’s major urban contributions to Richmond, many of his philanthropic gifts were given anonymously to charitable organizations and individuals in need. His continued devotion to Richmond is captured in his famous remark, “I am for Richmond, first and last.”
Lewis Ginter was born to John and Elizabeth Ginter, a Dutch immigrant couple, on April 24, 1824 in New York City. His father owned a grocery store, but died soon after Ginter was born. Several years later, Ginter's mother died, leaving him to be raised by his older sister and brother with their relatives.

Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Leòdhas, pronounced [ʎɔː.əs̪], also Isle of Lewis) is the northern part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island of the Western Isles or Outer Hebrides (an archipelago) of Scotland. The total area of Lewis is 683 square miles (1,770 km2).
Lewis is, in general, the lower lying part of the island, with the other part, Harris, being more mountainous. The flatter, more fertile land means Lewis contains the largest settlement, Stornoway, and three-quarters of the population of the Western Isles. Beyond human habitation, the island's diverse habitats are home to an assortment of flora and fauna, such as the golden eagle, red deer and seals and are recognised in a number of conservation areas.
Lewis is of Presbyterian tradition with a rich history, having once been part of the Norse Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Today, life is very different from elsewhere in Scotland with Sabbath observance, the Gaelic language and peat cutting retaining more importance than elsewhere. Lewis has a rich cultural heritage as can be seen from its myths and legends as well as the local literary and musical traditions.
The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 50 acres (200,000 m2), is a botanical garden located at 1800 Lakeside Avenue, on the North Side of Richmond, Virginia. It includes the Lakeside Wheel Club built by Lewis Ginter and expanded and remodeled into Bloemendaal by his niece Grace Arents.
The Garden’s three-fold mission is (1) to provide education to the community about the plant world, (2) promote the best in horticulture and landscape design and (3) work toward the goal of being a leader in botanical and applied horticultural research.
The gently rolling terrain that is the site of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden was once the hunting ground of Powhatan Indians. Known to the Powhatan as "Oughnum" this name underwent a number of modifications beginning in 1690, when Nathaniel Bacon, president of the Council of Virginia, granted James Moore of New Kent County a patent for 573 acres (2.32 km2) on "Uffnum Brook."
A prominent Quaker named John Pleasants was the new owner, followed by Thomas Williamson, who purchased the tract for less than 50 pounds in 1716; over the next 89 years ownership of the land remained, for the most part, in the Williamson family. Violence erupted in 1781 when Samuel Williamson’s home was pillaged by General Benedict Arnold’s Revolutionary War raid on Richmond. A dwelling, Oak Cottage, was built during this time, and a portion of the Williamson land along with this cottage was purchased by Virginia Governor Patrick Henry. in 1786. An outdoorsman, the liberty lover fished and hunted on the land, much as the earlier Native American inhabitants had done. He sold the parcel to James Thompson in 1788.
A botanical garden or botanic garden is a garden dedicated to the collection, cultivation and display of a wide range of plants labelled with their botanical names. It may contain specialist plant collections such as cacti and succulent plants, herb gardens, plants from particular parts of the world, and so on; there may be greenhouses, shadehouses, again with special collections such as tropical plants, alpine plants, or other exotic plants. Visitor services at a botanical garden might include tours, educational displays, art exhibitions, book rooms, open-air theatrical and musical performances, and other entertainment.
Botanical gardens are often run by universities or other scientific research organizations, and often have associated herbaria and research programmes in plant taxonomy or some other aspect of botanical science. In principle, their role is to maintain documented collections of living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display, and education, although this will depend on the resources available and the special interests pursued at each particular garden.
A garden is a planned space, usually outdoors, set aside for the display, cultivation, and enjoyment of plants and other forms of nature. The garden can incorporate both natural and man-made materials. The most common form today is known as a residential garden, but the term garden has traditionally been a more general one. Zoos, which display wild animals in simulated natural habitats, were formerly called zoological gardens. Western gardens are almost universally based on plants, with garden often signifying a shortened form of botanical garden.
Some traditional types of eastern gardens, such as Zen gardens, use plants sparsely or not at all. Xeriscape gardens use local native plants that do not require irrigation or extensive use of other resources while still providing the benefits of a garden environment. Gardens may exhibit structural enhancements, sometimes called follies, including water features such as fountains, ponds (with or without fish), waterfalls or creeks, dry creek beds, statuary, arbors, trellises and more.
The people at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden are doing a great job with their Community Kitchen Garden. They provide fresh vegetables to several groups around Richmond, Virginia. The garden continues to improve each year. This is a walk thru tour of what they have growing right now. We'll try to go back in a couple months and get an update of the progress.

See more at http://evolutionanimation.wordpress.com/ http://evolutionanimation.wordpress.com/2013/03/04/orchids-bees-and-bee-vision/ An animation I made along with guests to the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in which we 'evolved' 'orchids' using an evolutionary paper game I came up with. People first made flowers based off of my original, but then I introduced a bee, and explained that while we might like the look of a flower, the bee, or pollinator, is really what the plant is after. To simulate 'bee vision' I had people look through red plastic lenses, after which you would notice that your flower would be invisible if you colored it red, and have to adjust accordingly. I then got them to select for flowers that looked the most like bees (as the real bee orchid has) to attract the fuzz...

Grace Chapman - Director of Horticulture at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden located in Richmond Virginia. The building you see is the conservatory that houses a collection of tropical plants such as palms and orchids but we also have some beds that we change out 4 times a year to provide seasonal interest all year round. We just completed a bedding change out. We removed our plants from our holiday display to bring in tropical for the spring. Some of the things we are using are Black Magic Colocasia, Bromeliads and also some butterfly attracting plants. This is a different type of display for us and I really cant wait for the visitors to come see it for themselves. The Living Waters: An Interfaith Summit was held on 19 November 2013 at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Richmond, VA. Participants from the faith and conservation communities met to examine water through the lens of faith. Planned by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, it was a day of learning and collaborative discussion to develop "next steps" to improve water quality in our communities. This is the Opening Ceremony from that event.
Noted environmentalist Newton Ancarrow documented and photographed over 400 species of wildflowers along the banks of the James River in Richmond, Virginia from 1968 to 1971. He created a slideshow that he gave to garden clubs, women's groups, and other civic organizations. He also typed out the script of his presentation, and recorded it on audio cassette. Using the audio, his script, and digitized images of the slides, VCU Libraries has been able to recreate his hour-long slideshow. For more information about Ancarrow and his work, see the online exhibit and the Ancarrow Wildflower Digital Archive. http://go.vcu.edu/wildflowers http://dig.library.vcu.edu/cdm/landingpage/collection/anc http://www.lewisginter.org/learn/library/library-special-collections/ancarrow-digital-archive/ http://...
