A National Historic Site (NHS) is a protected area of national historic significance in the United States. An NHS usually contains a single historical feature directly associated with its subject. A related but separate designation, the National Historical Park (NHP), is an area that generally extends beyond single properties or buildings, and its resources include a mix of historic and sometimes significant natural features.
As of 2015, there are 50 NHPs and 90 NHSs. Most NHPs and NHSs are managed by the National Park Service (NPS). Some federally designated sites are privately owned, but are authorized to request assistance from the NPS as affiliated areas. One property, Grey Towers National Historic Site, is managed by the U.S. Forest Service.
As of October 15, 1966, all historic areas, including NHPs and NHSs, in the NPS are automatically listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). There are also about 80,000 NRHP sites, the large majority of which are neither owned nor managed by the NPS. Of these, about 2,500 have been designated at the highest status as National Historic Landmark (NHL) sites.

Maryland Heights is a great Washington, DC, metro area hike, located just outside historic Harpers Ferry, WV. Those who choose this trail are rewarded with a spectacular view of Harpers Ferry, and the confluence of the Shenandoah River into the Potomac River. The trail passes through several Civil War historic sites, which have been well marked by the National Park Service. Still pics and HD video of a 7.5 mile hike around Harpers Ferry, across the Potomac, and up to the summit of Maryland Heights. There are ruins of a stone fort from the Civil War at the summit. I also searched for and located the Maryland Heights survey benchmark that dates back to the original east coast survey authorized by Thomas Jefferson.
In 1783, Thomas Jefferson stood on a rock overlooking the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers and he declared "This scene is worth a voyage across the Atlantic." The small, but strategically located, town of Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, has seen an incredible amount of history since the early days of the young United States right up through the Civil War. The town is located on a point at the confluence of the Shenandoah River and the Potomac River, with Maryland to the north and Virginia to the east. The area is commonly referred to by locals as the "Tri State Area." Today, much of the history is preserved and on display as the Harper's Ferry National Historic Park. You can walk around the town and check out the old buildings and read the informational kiosk. You can a...
The Maryland Heights Trail is one of the "must do" hikes in Harper's Ferry National Historic Park, located in Maryland and West Virginia, in and around the historic town of Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. This trail is heavily used and crowded, even on weekdays. You'd better go early if you want any solitude at all. LOL! In this video, I start out along the north banks of the Potomac River, in Washington County, Maryland, just off the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Trail. From here I access the Maryland Heights Trail, which climbs steeply up the ridge. The trail passes some Civil War fortifications and then descends steeply to the top of a huge cliff that offers stunning views of the surrounding area. Please LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE, and SUBSCRIBE!!!
