State parks or provincial parks are parks or other protected areas managed at the sub-national level within those nations which use "state" or "province" as a political subdivision. State parks are typically established by a state to preserve a location on account of its natural beauty, historic interest, or recreational potential. There are state parks under the administration of the government of each U.S. state, and of some states of Mexico. The term is also used in Australia, though the distinction between state and national parks there is different. The Canadian equivalent term is provincial park. Similar systems of local government maintained parks exist in other countries, but the terminology varies.
State parks are thus similar to national parks, but under state rather than federal administration. Similarly, local government entities below state level may maintain parks, e.g., regional parks or county parks. In general, state parks are smaller than national parks, with a few exceptions such as the Adirondack Park in New York and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California.

This is my multi Emmy Award Winning Public Television Program on the Cass Scenic Railroad. This is by far one of my favorite Documentaries I have ever produced.
Nestled in the mountains of West Virginia, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park offers excursions that transport you back in time to relive an era when steam-driven locomotives were an essential part of everyday life. The 11 miles tracks at Cass, restored just as it was in the early 1900's, making Cass Scenic Railroad State Park America's authentic operating museum of lumber railroading. The park preserved geared engines which Unlike standard steam locomotives, Shays and the similarly designed Climax and Heisler engines are driven by direct gearing to each and every wheel. The smooth, even flow of power enables the engines to negotiate twisting mountain grades. All three types are represented in the Cass Collection, along with an example of a "rod" style mainline Iron Horse. Shay #2 i...

The next stop on vacation was for a ride on the Cass Scenic Railroad. We rode the train to Whittaker. Shay 5 was the power for our train while the Bald Knob train had Western Maryland Shay 6, the largest operating Shay in the world.
I made a quick stop in Durbin West Virginia to check out the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad's Durbin Rocket. The normal power for this section of railroad has been a Climax locomotive but that locomotive was out of service. Filling in for the Climax is Cass Scenic Railroad's Heisler #6.

Deep In the heart of the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, a whistle can be heard echoing across the land. Those whistles are from none other than the shay locomotives of The Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. Train Man Productions ventured out to the Cass Scenic Railroad on July 20th, and we are proud to bring you the full excitement of this Railroad for your viewing pleasure. Included in this video, is a morning photo session at the Cass yard and depot that was arranged by Walter Scriptunas II. We will also climb aboard the train as the powerful shay engine climbs grades as steep as 11% to get us up to Bald Knob. So sit back, and enjoy steam railroading in the wild & wonderful state of West Virginia!
We made our way down to Cass WV to see the legendary logging railroad. Today we were treated to the triple header lead by Heisler #6. Cass railroad #5 double headed with Western Maryland #6 to Whitaker and Big 6 took us all the way to Bald Knob.
On June 11, 2015, Georgian Rail Video Productions ventured 300 feet from the end of the world, to the mountain town of Cass, West Virginia. The town of Cass was founded in 1900 by the West Virginia Pulp & Paper Company. Organized by William Luke & Sons, who had purchased 70,000 acres of timber in the area for the Luke, Maryland and Covington, Virginia mills. Hungarian, Italian and Austrian Immigrants built the railroad to bring the timber to the band-saw mill in Cass where there was a connection with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway line that ran along the banks of the Greenbriar River. Samuel Slaymaker and Emory Shaffer supervised the building of the railroad, mill and town for the workers. The town was named for Joseph Cass, who was the vice president of the WVP&P;, and a predominant comp...
The Cass Scenic Railroad is a historic logging railway along the C&O; Greenbrier Division. This gem of West Virginia is located deep in the Appalachian mountain range. Cass operates "Geared" Steam Locomotives which help them ascend and descend the grade, which can be as high as 4,000 feet. As a fourth of July present, we've compiled and edited a 30 minuet video for our subscribers. All commentaries aboard train on the Whittaker excursion brought to you by James DiPofi. Copyright 2014.
SPECIAL PRESENTATION! "The Power of Three and More". The WV returns to Cass for the 2014 Railfan Weekend, featuring three days of mountain railroading at its best. On Friday, it was 'the power of three' with a rare tripleheader featuring Shays 5, 6, and 11 overpowering a 10 car train to the summit of Bald Knob. On Saturday, it was a return to Spruce and the Big Cut, featuring vintage diesels from the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad. Sunday, it was back to tradition as we started the day with the famous "Three Train Race", followed by runbys below Whittaker Station. Includes at least three exclusive runby angles from this year's event not seen elsewhere on YouTube! The weekend also featured runbys of CSRR's Heisler #6 hauling a simulated freight train between Cass and Bald Knob...
SPECIAL PRESENTATION! "Chasing Cass Scenic Railroad". An "alternate" look at the annual Cass Railfan Weekend, as taken by a non-participant in the annual Weekend's festivities. Since I wasn't able to determine whether I would have time to visit for the full weekend, my friend Keith and I decided at last minute to drive down on Sunday and chase the train as it headed up the mountain. As this footage shows, there are still quite a few interesting sites...even for those who are not able to purchase tickets. The footage includes CSRR Shay #11 and Big Six arriving at the water tank, Shay #4 switching the log train, the famous "Three Train Race", the passenger train crossing Back Mountain Road, both the passenger train and freight train crossing Gum Road, and footage of both trains do...
