(This one goes back to episode 7 of the series! So it's old...but it's still a personal favorite)
I just got done playing Lego Batman 3, and there are SO MANY CHARACTERS to unlock. Seriously, like 150. And while a lot of the comic book characters I recognized -- Joker, Lex Luthor, Hal Jordan and the Green Lanterns -- there was a WHOLE lot more that I didn't, like a half-Superman, half-Batman hybrid, and a robotic Superman, and a Batman COW! So I'm digging deep into comic lore to shed some light on these lesser-known characters, and what I've found is that the characters you DON'T know are WAY cooler than the ones that you DO!

With superheroes dominating the box office around the world, the average movie fan can probably tell you the biggest points in any superhero’s origin story. But the origin stories and classic comic arcs that every fan knows by heart are usually the ones the publisher wants them to remember. Even the brightest heroes tend to have some dark stories in their past. And when we say dark, we mean so dark, fans will wonder why they were ever published in the first place.

There are a lot of comic book fans out there, and many of them are Asian. Yet historically, superheroes of Asian descent have been a rare thing in the Marvel & DC universes.
With movies like Captain America Civil War, Batman vs Superman and Deadpool already having broken several box office records this year, superhero movies are only getting more popular.
And you know, you have the first female solo superhero film in quite some time coming out in 2017 with DC’s Wonder Woman, and the first black solo superhero film in some time coming out in 2018 with Marvel’s Black Panther. Makes me wonder when we’ll see the first Asian solo superhero film on the big screen.
But we’re a long ways off because first, we actually need a successful and popular Asian superhero in the comics, and thus far, it’s not clear if we even have one.
Well you be the judge.
Here are 10 Asian superheroes from Marvel and D.C.
1. Jubilee (Marvel)
- arguably the most well-known Asian superhero
- a Chinese-American girl born in LA
- X-Men’s youngest member in the early 1990s
2. Shang Chi (Marvel)
- created in the 1970s, a period in time where people were crazy for Bruce Lee and anything Kung Fu related
- the premiere Asian character of the 70s
- born in China
- son & nemesis of the infamous, wealthy international Chinese crime lord Fu Manchu.
- has no superpowers, but is an expert in all forms of martial arts
- unfortunately as stereotypically Asian as you can get
3. Sunfire (Marvel)
- Japan’s premiere superhero
- just like Shang Chi, an Asian character of overt Asian symbolisms.
- real name, Shiro Yoshida
- born to a mother who suffered radiation poisoning (Hiroshima atomic bomb)
- became a mutant possessing solar radiation powers
4. Atom (DC)
- real name, Ryan Choi
- super smart & gets good grades
- can be quite the ladies’ man
- from Hong Kong
- protege of original Atom, Ray Palmer
- the Atom is a super hero who can shrink to a subatomic size (like Ant-Man)
- pretty noteworthy because first time an Asian guy took over the mantle of an existing superhero with an already established fan base
- too bad he only appeared in 78 issues before being killed off by the assassin, Deathstroke
- his death became the subject of racial controversy as he had been one of the few high profile Asian characters in the DC Universe
5. Batgirl (DC)
- real name, Cassandra Cain
- she’s a halfie, with a white dad and a Chinese mom
- adopted by Bruce Wayne, aka Batman.
- under Batman’s watch, she became Batgirl
- some refer to her as the Asian Batgirl
6. Psylocke (Marvel)
- a controversial entry because technically, she isn’t Asian!
- real name is Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock, originally a blonde haired girl from Essex, Great Britain
- a mutant with vast telepathic and telekinetic powers and a long time X-Man.
- had her soul transferred into the body of a Japanese female ninja
- in X-Men: Apocalypse movie she is played by Olivia Munn (Is this another example of whitewashing in Hollywood?)
7. Ms. Marvel (Marvel)
- real name, Kamala Khan, the second Ms. Marvel who made her debut in 2013
- a Pakistani Muslim teenage girl living in New Jersey from a very traditional Pakistani family.
- is an inhuman (a race of superhumans)
- her power makes her able to stretch her body in unimaginable ways
8. Silk (Marvel)
- real name Cindy Moon, a Korean American girl.
- Spiderman was bitten by a radioactive spider but what we didn’t know was, so did another student
9. Hulk (Marvel)
- in 2015 we were introduced to a Korean Hulk.
- real name, Amadeus Cho, a Korean American
- this new Hulk fights gamma monsters while traveling cross country with his sister Maddy
10. Superman
- DC one upped Marvel by making one of, if not, the most iconic superhero of all time Asian.
- Superman is now Chinese!
- a 17 year old kid from Shanghai named Kenan Kong
- you can imagine the outrage this has caused as ‘superman is supposed to be white’ and American

Ask the average comic book or superhero movie fan to name the deadliest, most lethal, and brutal comic superheroes, and the same names will probably rise to the top: Wolverine is almost guaranteed to take the top spot, with insanely powerful heroes like Thor or the Hulk close behind. But those characters are only blessed with superpowers that let them destroy enemies one by one, with brute force, or directed attacks. But what about the heroes whose very abilities threaten the lives of everyone around them?
The movies won’t go into too much detail, since it’s the claw-slashers, punchers, kickers, and enchanted hammer-swingers that get the most attention. And usually, the least convenient side effects of a cool superpower are written off or ignored completely. But not by us. In the interest of giving the unsung heroes their time in the spotlight – and pointing out how the science of their superpowers poses a threat to everyone they meet – we’re taking a look at Marvel’s most lethal heroes in our latest Docu series.

Superman
Superman is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. He was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster in 1933; later, in 1938, the character was sold to Detective Comics, Inc. (later DC Comics). Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 (June 1938) and subsequently appeared in various radio serials, newspaper strips, television programs, films, and video games. With this success, Superman helped to create the superhero genre and establish its primacy within the American comic book.
Superman's appearance is distinctive and iconic; he usually wears a blue costume, red cape, and stylized red-and-yellow "S" shield on his chest. This shield is used in a myriad of media to symbolize the character. The origin story of Superman relates that he was born Kal-El on the planet Krypton, before being rocketed to Earth as an infant by his scientist father Jor-El, moments before Krypton's destruction. Discovered and adopted by a Kansas farmer and his wife, the child is raised as Clark Kent and imbued with a strong moral compass. Very early on he started to display various superhuman abilities, which, upon reaching maturity, he resolved to use for the benefit of humanity through a secret "Superman" identity. Superman resides and operates in the fictional American city of Metropolis. As Clark Kent, he is a journalist for the Daily Planet, a Metropolis newspaper. Superman's love interest is generally Lois Lane, and his archenemy is supervillain Lex Luthor. He is typically a member of the Justice League and close ally of Batman and Wonder Woman. Like other characters in the DC Universe, several alternate versions of Superman have been produced.

Superhero
In modern popular fiction, a superhero (sometimes rendered super-hero or super hero) is a type of heroic character possessing extraordinary talents, supernatural phenomena, or superhuman powers and is dedicated to a moral goal or protecting the public. A female superhero is sometimes called a superheroine (also rendered super-heroine or super heroine). Fiction centered on such characters, especially in American comic books since the 1930s, is known as superhero fiction.
By most definitions, characters do not require actual supernatural or superhuman powers or phenomena to be deemed superheroes. While the Dictionary.com definition of "superhero" is "A figure, especially in a comic strip or cartoon, endowed with superhuman powers and usually portrayed as fighting evil or crime," the longstanding Merriam-Webster dictionary gives the definition as "a fictional hero having extraordinary or superhuman powers; also : an exceptionally skillful or successful person". Terms such as masked crime fighters, costumed adventurers or masked vigilantes are sometimes used to refer to characters such as the Spirit, who may not be explicitly referred to as superheroes but nevertheless share similar traits.

Yet historically, superheroes of Asian descent have been a rare thing in the Marvel & DC universes. With movies like Captain America Civil War, Batman vs Superman and Deadpool already having broken several box office records this year, superhero movies are only getting more popular. And you know, you have the first female solo superhero film in quite some time coming out in 2017 with DC’s Wonder Woman, and the first black solo superhero film in some time coming out in 2018 with Marvel’s Black Panther. Makes me wonder when we’ll see the first Asian solo superhero film on the big screen. But we’re a long ways off because first, we actually need a successful and popular Asian superhero in the comics, and thus far, it’s not clear if we even have one. Well you be the judge. Here are 10 Asian superheroes from Marvel and D.C. 1. Jubilee (Marvel) - arguably the most well-known Asian superhero - a Chinese-American girl born in LA - X-Men’s youngest member in the early 1990s 2. Shang Chi (Marvel) - created in the 1970s, a period in time where people were crazy for Bruce Lee and anything Kung Fu related - the premiere Asian character of the 70s - born in China - son & nemesis of the infamous, wealthy international Chinese crime lord Fu Manchu. - has no superpowers, but is an expert in all forms of martial arts - unfortunately as stereotypically Asian as you can get 3. Sunfire (Marvel) - Japan’s premiere superhero - just like Shang Chi, an Asian character of overt Asian symbolisms. - real name, Shiro Yoshida - born to a mother who suffered radiation poisoning (Hiroshima atomic bomb) - became a mutant possessing solar radiation powers 4. Atom (DC) - real name, Ryan Choi - super smart & gets good grades - can be quite the ladies’ man - from Hong Kong - protege of original Atom, Ray Palmer - the Atom is a super hero who can shrink to a subatomic size (like Ant-Man) - pretty noteworthy because first time an Asian guy took over the mantle of an existing superhero with an already established fan base - too bad he only appeared in 78 issues before being killed off by the assassin, Deathstroke - his death became the subject of racial controversy as he had been one of the few high profile Asian characters in the DC Universe 5. Batgirl (DC) - real name, Cassandra Cain - she’s a halfie, with a white dad and a Chinese mom - adopted by Bruce Wayne, aka Batman. - under Batman’s watch, she became Batgirl - some refer to her as the Asian Batgirl 6. Psylocke (Marvel) - a controversial entry because technically, she isn’t Asian! - real name is Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock, originally a blonde haired girl from Essex, Great Britain - a mutant with vast telepathic and telekinetic powers and a long time X-Man. - had her soul transferred into the body of a Japanese female ninja - in X-Men: Apocalypse movie she is played by Olivia Munn (Is this another example of whitewashing in Hollywood?) 7. Ms. Marvel (Marvel) - real name, Kamala Khan, the second Ms. Marvel who made her debut in 2013 - a Pakistani Muslim teenage girl living in New Jersey from a very traditional Pakistani family. - is an inhuman (a race of superhumans) - her power makes her able to stretch her body in unimaginable ways 8. Silk (Marvel) - real name Cindy Moon, a Korean American girl. - Spiderman was bitten by a radioactive spider but what we didn’t know was, so did another student 9. Hulk (Marvel) - in 2015 we were introduced to a Korean Hulk. - real name, Amadeus Cho, a Korean American - this new Hulk fights gamma monsters while traveling cross country with his sister Maddy 10. Superman - DC one upped Marvel by making one of, if not, the most iconic superhero of all time Asian. - Superman is now Chinese! - a 17 year old kid from Shanghai named Kenan Kong - you can imagine the outrage this has caused as ‘superman is supposed to be white’ and American How do you feel about the evolution of Asian superheroes over time? I just got done playing Lego Batman 3, and there are SO MANY CHARACTERS to unlock. Seriously, like 150. And while a lot of the comic book characters I recognized -- Joker, Lex Luthor, Hal Jordan and the Green Lanterns -- there was a WHOLE lot more that I didn't, like a half-Superman, half-Batman hybrid, and a robotic Superman, and a Batman COW! So I'm digging deep into comic lore to shed some light on these lesser-known characters, and what I've found is that the characters you DON'T know are WAY cooler than the ones that you DO!

There are a lot of comic book fans out there, and many of them are Asian. Yet historically, superheroes of Asian descent have been a rare thing in the Marvel & DC universes.
With movies like Captain America Civil War, Batman vs Superman and Deadpool already having broken several box office records this year, superhero movies are only getting more popular.
And you know, you have the first female solo superhero film in quite some time coming out in 2017 with DC’s Wonder Woman, and the first black solo superhero film in some time coming out in 2018 with Marvel’s Black Panther. Makes me wonder when we’ll see the first Asian solo superhero film on the big screen.
But we’re a long ways off because first, we actually need a successful and popular Asian superhero in the comics, and thus far, it’s not clear if we even have one.
Well you be the judge.
Here are 10 Asian superheroes from Marvel and D.C.
1. Jubilee (Marvel)
- arguably the most well-known Asian superhero
- a Chinese-American girl born in LA
- X-Men’s youngest member in the early 1990s
2. Shang Chi (Marvel)
- created in the 1970s, a period in time where people were crazy for Bruce Lee and anything Kung Fu related
- the premiere Asian character of the 70s
- born in China
- son & nemesis of the infamous, wealthy international Chinese crime lord Fu Manchu.
- has no superpowers, but is an expert in all forms of martial arts
- unfortunately as stereotypically Asian as you can get
3. Sunfire (Marvel)
- Japan’s premiere superhero
- just like Shang Chi, an Asian character of overt Asian symbolisms.
- real name, Shiro Yoshida
- born to a mother who suffered radiation poisoning (Hiroshima atomic bomb)
- became a mutant possessing solar radiation powers
4. Atom (DC)
- real name, Ryan Choi
- super smart & gets good grades
- can be quite the ladies’ man
- from Hong Kong
- protege of original Atom, Ray Palmer
- the Atom is a super hero who can shrink to a subatomic size (like Ant-Man)
- pretty noteworthy because first time an Asian guy took over the mantle of an existing superhero with an already established fan base
- too bad he only appeared in 78 issues before being killed off by the assassin, Deathstroke
- his death became the subject of racial controversy as he had been one of the few high profile Asian characters in the DC Universe
5. Batgirl (DC)
- real name, Cassandra Cain
- she’s a halfie, with a white dad and a Chinese mom
- adopted by Bruce Wayne, aka Batman.
- under Batman’s watch, she became Batgirl
- some refer to her as the Asian Batgirl
6. Psylocke (Marvel)
- a controversial entry because technically, she isn’t Asian!
- real name is Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock, originally a blonde haired girl from Essex, Great Britain
- a mutant with vast telepathic and telekinetic powers and a long time X-Man.
- had her soul transferred into the body of a Japanese female ninja
- in X-Men: Apocalypse movie she is played by Olivia Munn (Is this another example of whitewashing in Hollywood?)
7. Ms. Marvel (Marvel)
- real name, Kamala Khan, the second Ms. Marvel who made her debut in 2013
- a Pakistani Muslim teenage girl living in New Jersey from a very traditional Pakistani family.
- is an inhuman (a race of superhumans)
- her power makes her able to stretch her body in unimaginable ways
8. Silk (Marvel)
- real name Cindy Moon, a Korean American girl.
- Spiderman was bitten by a radioactive spider but what we didn’t know was, so did another student
9. Hulk (Marvel)
- in 2015 we were introduced to a Korean Hulk.
- real name, Amadeus Cho, a Korean American
- this new Hulk fights gamma monsters while traveling cross country with his sister Maddy
10. Superman
- DC one upped Marvel by making one of, if not, the most iconic superhero of all time Asian.
- Superman is now Chinese!
- a 17 year old kid from Shanghai named Kenan Kong
- you can imagine the outrage this has caused as ‘superman is supposed to be white’ and American

Muhammad Ali vs Superman Comics
Superman vs. Muhammad Ali is an oversize comic book published by DC Comics in 1978. The 72-page book features Superman teaming up with the heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali to defeat an alien invasion of Earth. It was based on an original story by Dennis O'Neil which was adapted by Neal Adams, with pencils by Adams, and figure inks by Dick Giordano with background inks by Terry Austin. Joe Kubert was originally asked to draw the cover, and his version (a black-and-white sketch of which still survives) didn't feature any celebrities, but just a "normal" raucous crowd of boxing fans. DC didn't approve of Kubert's likeness of Ali, however, nor the overall grim feeling of the piece, and asked Adams to draw the book instead. Comedian, actor, writer and producer Garry Shandling, best known for “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” and The Larry Sanders Show, died Thursday for as yet unknown reasons. A spokesman for the LAPD said they received a 911 call from Shandling’s home on Thursday, saying only that the Shandling suffered from a “medical emergency.” He later died at an L.A. hospital. He was 66 years old.
Despite the less-than-stellar reviews by critics for Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice the stars and director Zack Snyder are not letting it get them down. Superman himself, Henry Cavill, was the first to comment on the reviews saying the critics don’t really matter - it’s the audience that will dictate its longevity and whether or not more films will be made because they’re the ones that are buying the tickets.
There’s a political showdown happening in Georgia over a controversial new bill that would protect religious officials from having to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies while also allowing faith-based organizations to deny services of employment to those who violate their religious beliefs. With the bill now on the desk of Governor Nathan Deal. With big tax incentives, the state has become the go-to place for Hollywood productions with Marvel and Disney utilizing the incentive as well as The Walking Dead.

Not wanting to be left out of the superhero conversation, 20th Century Fox and Empire magazine have released new images from their latest mutant superhero movie X-Men Apocalypse. The new images feature a look at Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse while the other features Ben Hardy’s mutant Angel before he changes in to one of the Four Horsemen of Archangel.
Warner Bros. has released the first trailer from Hangover director Todd Phillips’ War Dogs starring Jonah Hill and Miles Teller. Based on a true story, War Dogs follows two friends living in Miami during the first Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts.
La Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element director Luc Besson has released a first image from his newest Sci-Fi movie, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Yesterday, Besson tweeted out a photo of his two leads, Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne in costume, giving us our first look at what might movie will look like. Based on the graphic novel of the same name, the movie is about Valerian played by DeHaan and Laureline played by Cara Delevingne who are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe.

Based on a true story, War Dogs follows two friends living in Miami during the first Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts.
La Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element director Luc Besson has released a first image from his newest Sci-Fi movie, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Yesterday, Besson tweeted out a photo of his two leads, Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne in costume, giving us our first look at what might movie will look like. Based on the graphic novel of the same name, the movie is about Valerian played by DeHaan and Laureline played by Cara Delevingne who are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe.

It’s Monday which means it’s time for the weekend box office report brought to you by our friends at AMC Theaters. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice shattered box office predictions opening up at Number 1 with $170.1 million dollars domestic marking the biggest debut of a DC Comics film ever and the sixth-biggest domestic opening weekend of all-time. Overseas it opened to $254 million from 66 markets for a global debut of $424.1 million, the number 1 showing of all time for a superhero adaptation and the fourth-biggest for any title. Zootopia took the Number 2 spot with $23.1 million to push the domestic total to $240.5 million. At Number 3 was My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 earning $18.1 million. There was a tie for the Number 4 spot with Miracle from Heaven and The Divergent Series: Allegiant both taking in $9.5 million dollars. And at Number 5, 10 Cloverfield Lane with 6 million.
An update on last week’s story on Marvel and Disney boycotting the state of Georgia if a controversial religious liberty bill dubbed by critics as “anti-gay” was signed into law. In a report from Variety, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal will veto the bill after mounting pressure from major corporations and media companies condemned the measure.
Kingsman 2 is inching closer and closer to production and now we have some concept art and a new title, this according to writer/director Mattew Vaughn. In an interview with Empire Magazine, Vaughn revealed the new title to be Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The Empire article also included four pieces of concept art, which includes a first look at the Kingsman cab that can dive deep underwater like a submarine; a bombed-out Kingsman headquarters, The Statesman headquarters and the lair of the villain, Poppy, that will be played by Julianne Moore. Kingsman: The Golden Circle is slated for a release on June 10th, 2017.

Over the weekend at WonderCon, Warner Bros and director James Wan released the newest trailer for The Conjuring 2. In the trailer, Ed and Lorraine Warren played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are now being hunted by an angry spirit that’s been channeling itself through a young English child.
After Warner Bros and New Line debuted the Conjuring 2 trailer, they next turned to another horror movie with the debut look at Lights Out, the first movie from director David Sandberg based on the viral short film he created by the same name. James Wan produces from his Atomic Monster Productions. Lights Out is the tale of an unknown terror that lurks in the dark. Holding a mysterious attachment to a mother played by Maria Bello, a supernatural entity has returned with a vengeance to torment the entire family.
Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer for the sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Directed by Earth to Echo filmmaker Dave Green, the sequel sees the turtles facing off against a number of familiar faces from the comics and cartoons including a small peek at Krang with more action shots of Bebop and Rocksteady. The spot also shows Arrow star Stephen Amell as the hockey stick-wielding Casey Jones.
Warner Bros. released a second teaser trailer for The LEGO Batman Movie directed by Chris McKay. The new teaser directly addresses seeing Thomas and Martha Wayne murdered again and again and again in every Batman movie released in the years past, also referencing this weekends latest, Batman v Superman.

Superman vs. Muhammad Ali is an oversize comic book published by DC Comics in 1978. The 72-page book features Superman teaming up with the heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali to defeat an alien invasion of Earth. It was based on an original story by Dennis O'Neil which was adapted by Neal Adams, with pencils by Adams, and figure inks by Dick Giordano with background inks by Terry Austin.
Joe Kubert was originally asked to draw the cover, and his version (a black-and-white sketch of which still survives) didn't feature any celebrities, but just a "normal" raucous crowd of boxing fans. DC didn't approve of Kubert's likeness of Ali, however, nor the overall grim feeling of the piece, and asked Adams to draw the book instead. Adams' original cover illustration (modeled very closely on Kubert's layout), included Mick Jagger in the front cover's lower left corner; he was replaced in the final version by fight promoter Don King.
