What do Angry Birds, Obama and Facebook have in common? They are all winners. Barack Obama first defeated the once mighty Hillary Clinton only to convincingly become the victor of the 2008 US elections. Angry
Birds, a simple puzzle game out of Finland, became a worldwide brand rivaling icons as Mickey Mouse and Super Mario. And Facebook is the most popular social network in the world, nearing a billion users and valued at over 100 billions dollars. What these examples go to show is that if you win in the age of digital networks, you win big.
Underlying the rapid rise of games, politicians and online platforms is the so-called 'winner-takes-all'-logic. Fueled by the rise of networked technologies once unknown people, brands or innovations can seemingly out of nowhere become worldwide phenomenon. Hits, blockbusters and famous people existed well before the Internet. Today, however, if you win, you win big very fast. Unpacking these success stories reveals several fascinating economic, social, cultural properties. Equally important, the ability to generate a disproportionate amount of attention and revenue has significant consequences in terms of diversity. While everybody seems to be able to become a winner overnight, only a few actually do.
Regarding David Nieborg
Dr David B. Nieborg (1980) is an academic, entrepreneur and columnist. David graduated cum laude at Utrecht University, was a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam. He has published on digital culture and games and has a particular interest in the
political economy of the cultural industries, militainment, social media, social politics, gamification and digital games. He was a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University. David regularly consults businesses, NGO's and government departments. He is one of the co-founders of Flight 1337, an Amsterdam-based gamification studio. As a journalist, David contributed to several online and offline outlets and he currently is a columnist at nrc.next.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. Every Released ABBA Song
(a 10 minute chronology)
Eight months in the making, this is an attempt to educate the masses. Not necessarily to convert people into fans, in fact, this is more for the semi-fans who insist on ignoring everything but the Gold compilation.
Thanks mainly to tribute bands and the stage show Mamma Mia!, people are forgetting the true ABBA. Too much of their modern image revolves around the (deliberately) crazy costumes and happy-go-lucky lyrics. The real ABBA had so much variety.
And so was conceived this chronology - it's the fairest and most interesting way to present the history of the foursome. Listen to their sound evolve from folk to synthpop via many others; note the experiments with reggae, funk, classical and techno. Watch their fashion and lyrics mature.

The Winner Takes It All
"The Winner Takes It All" is a song recorded by the Swedish pop group ABBA. Released as the first single from the group's Super Trouper album on 21 July 1980, it is a ballad in the key of F-sharp major, reflecting the end of a romance. The single's B-side was the non-album track "Elaine".
History
"The Winner Takes It All", original demo title "The Story of My Life", was written by both Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, with Agnetha Fältskog singing the lead vocal. The lyrics to the song were thought to mirror the divorce between Ulvaeus and Fältskog in 1979, similar to the 1981 song "When All Is Said and Done", in which Ulvaeus deals with the divorce between Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson in 1981.
Ulvaeus denies the song is about his and Fältskog's divorce, saying the basis of the song "is the experience of a divorce, but it's fiction. There wasn't a winner or a loser in our case. A lot of people think it's straight out of reality, but it's not". American critic Chuck Klosterman, who says "The Winner Takes It All" is "[the only] pop song that examines the self-aware guilt one feels when talking to a person who has humanely obliterated your heart" finds Ulvaeus' denial hard to believe in light of the original title.

Every Released ABBA Song (a 10 minute chronology) Eight months in the making, this is an attempt to educate the masses. Not necessarily to convert people into fans, in fact, this is more for the semi-fans who insist on ignoring everything but the Gold compilation. Thanks mainly to tribute bands and the stage show Mamma Mia!, people are forgetting the true ABBA. Too much of their modern image revolves around the (deliberately) crazy costumes and happy-go-lucky lyrics. The real ABBA had so much variety. And so was conceived this chronology - it's the fairest and most interesting way to present the history of the foursome. Birds, a simple puzzle game out of Finland, became a worldwide brand rivaling icons as Mickey Mouse and Super Mario. And Facebook is the most popular social network in the world, nearing a billion users and valued at over 100 billions dollars. What these examples go to show is that if you win in the age of digital networks, you win big.
Underlying the rapid rise of games, politicians and online platforms is the so-called 'winner-takes-all'-logic. Fueled by the rise of networked technologies once unknown people, brands or innovations can seemingly out of nowhere become worldwide phenomenon. Hits, blockbusters and famous people existed well before the Internet. Today, however, if you win, you win big very fast. Unpacking these success stories reveals several fascinating economic, social, cultural properties. Equally important, the ability to generate a disproportionate amount of attention and revenue has significant consequences in terms of diversity. While everybody seems to be able to become a winner overnight, only a few actually do.
Regarding David Nieborg
Dr David B. Nieborg (1980) is an academic, entrepreneur and columnist. David graduated cum laude at Utrecht University, was a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam. He has published on digital culture and games and has a particular interest in the
political economy of the cultural industries, militainment, social media, social politics, gamification and digital games. He was a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University. David regularly consults businesses, NGO's and government departments. He is one of the co-founders of Flight 1337, an Amsterdam-based gamification studio. As a journalist, David contributed to several online and offline outlets and he currently is a columnist at nrc.next.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Sing (Stephen Chow) is a mainland China country boy who arrives in Hong Kong to visit his Uncle "Blackie Tat" (Ng Man-tat). When Sing stays with his uncle and his friends in their apartment, Blackie soon learns of Sing's supernatural ability to see through objects and, later on, his ability to change playing cards by rubbing them. He takes advantage of this and turns Sing into the Dou Seng or the "Saint of Gamblers". After getting into a fight with several alleyway gamblers he meets the lovely Yee-mung (lit. trans: Beautiful Dream, but euphemistically as wet dream), a henchman for the "King of Gamblers", and becomes infatuated with her. Sing quickly becomes a rival to the King and must win his way through a world competition to prove his skill.

He takes advantage of this and turns Sing into the Dou Seng or the "Saint of Gamblers". After getting into a fight with several alleyway gamblers he meets the lovely Yee-mung (lit. trans: Beautiful Dream, but euphemistically as wet dream), a henchman for the "King of Gamblers", and becomes infatuated with her. Sing quickly becomes a rival to the King and must win his way through a world competition to prove his skill.
