Izear Luster "Ike" Turner, Jr. (November 5, 1931 – December 12, 2007) was an American musician, bandleader, songwriter, arranger, talent scout, and record producer. An early pioneer of fifties rock and roll, he is most popularly known for his work in the 1960s and 1970s with his then-wife Tina Turner in the Ike & Tina Turner Revue.
Turner began playing piano and guitar when he was eight, forming his group, the Kings of Rhythm, as a teenager. He employed the group as his backing band for the rest of his life. His first recording, "Rocket 88", credited to "Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats", in 1951 is considered a contender for "first rock and roll song". Relocating to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1954, he built the Kings into one of the most renowned acts on the local club circuit. There he met singer Anna Mae Bullock, whom he renamed Tina Turner, forming The Ike & Tina Turner Revue, which over the course of the sixties became a soul/rock crossover success.

Plot: "My Sweet Satan" - Ricky Casland hangs himself in prison. Flashbacks and discussions with friends trace his degeneracy into drugs and Satan worship that culminates in the crime that put him behind bars. "Roadkill: the Final Days of John Martin" - John Martin stays at home a lot watching TV and eating of the bountiful harvest from the roads. He only goes out when he needs more supplies, and he doesn't always limit himself to roadkill. "Doper" - Barry and his friends smoke a lot of pot, and generally live for the party, but manage to maintain responsible employment, as evidenced by supportive interviews with Barry's coworkers.

Plot: Anna Mae Bullock always had a special voice. Soon after arriving in St. Louis to live with the mother who had walked out when she was small, the now teenage Anna Mae soon attracts the attention of pop group leader Ike Turner. She becomes the band's singer, his wife, and mother to his children - not all hers. In love with Ike and determined not to leave in the way her mother had, she finds herself the target of increasing violence from her unstable husband who can't see who is making the band such a success.

The song "Proud Mary" was written by John Fogerty of American roots rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival. The song is about an old steamboat on the Mississippi River -- typically "down home" lyrics like so many songs by CCR. Over the years the song has been covered by various artists. The version of Ike & Tina Turner is something special, because it contains a spoken word intro by Tina Turner as a slow opening -- only to become a typically...
Widely acknowledged as the first "rock and roll" song.
http://www.vladtv.com - Miss Robbie Montgomery and her son Tim Norman, owners of the delicious St. Louis soul food restaurant chain Sweetie Pie's, sat down for an exclusive interview with VladTV to discuss Robbie's years working as an "Ikette" for Ike and Tina Turner. She recalled how Ike was the boss and in control of all of the business dealings of his and Tina's career, but never allowed himself to reveal the physical abuse he subjected Tina to in front of a public audience. While Miss Robbie never actually saw Tina being abused, she and the rest of the Ikettes knew it was happening because Tina would have injuries on her face afterwards. She stated that she believes Ike Turner "was a little crazy." After recalling her years as an Ikette, Robbie opened up her Sweetie Pie's restauran...

This might be one of the greatest kinescopes floating around. It's the complete 1959 Party Time show with Ike and the gang. I've seen clips from this show but here it is complete with pretty cool original original commercials. One of the other fun parts of the show is when the swing dance champion does a dance with his new partner. She is supposed to go under his leg but lifts her head up too soon (about 10:31). Ouch. There is a clip of the Treniers singing "Calypso Joe" stuck on at the end by mistake. Enjoy it. This is posted for historical purposes and is fair use. I buy old concert posters and handbills. If you like Ike, the you will enjoy the vintage posters at my site. www.kardboardkid.com

Ike & Tina Turner were an American musical duo composed of the husband-and-wife team of Ike Turner and Tina Turner. The duo started as an offshoot splinter act from Ike Turner's The Kings of Rhythm before the name changed to the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. The duo was once considered "one of the hottest, most durable, and potentially most explosive of all R&B; ensembles". Their early works including "A Fool in Love", "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", "I Idolize You" and "River Deep - Mountain High" which is featured in this video. These songs became high points in the development of soul music while their later works were cited for wildly interpretive re-arrangements of rock songs such as "I Want to Take You Higher" and "Proud Mary", the latter song for which they won a Grammy Award. They're also k...

Born on November 26, 1939 in Nutbush, Tennessee Tina Turner became a star performing with husband, Ike Turner. She divorced him in 1978, after years of abuse, and reinvented herself as a solo performer. She's had a number one hit with "What's Love Got to Do With It," acted in a Mad Max film, and recorded a James Bond theme. Now semi-retired, she still tours and enjoys her position as rock royalty.
