Alex North (December 4, 1910 – September 8, 1991) was an American composer best known for his many film scores, including A Streetcar Named Desire (one of the first jazz-based film scores), Viva Zapata!, Spartacus, Cleopatra, and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. He was the first composer to receive an Honorary Academy Award.
North was born Isadore Soifer in Chester, Pennsylvania to Russian Jewish parents.
North managed to integrate his modernism into typical film music leitmotif structure, rich with themes. One of these became the famous song, "Unchained Melody". Nominated for fifteen Oscars but unsuccessful each time, North is one of only two film composers to receive the Lifetime Achievement Academy Award, the other being Ennio Morricone. North's frequent collaborator as orchestrator was the avant-garde composer Henry Brant. He won the 1968 Golden Globe award for his music to The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968).
His best-known film scores include A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman, Viva Zapata!, The Rainmaker, Spartacus, The Misfits, Cleopatra, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Dragonslayer and Under the Volcano. His music for The Wonderful Country makes use of Mexican and American motifs.
North is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. North is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of south and is perpendicular to east and west.
The word north is related to the Old High German nord, both descending from the Proto-Indo-European unit ner-, meaning "down" (or "under"). (Presumably a natural primitive description of its concept is "to the left of the rising sun".)
The Latin word borealis comes from the Greek boreas "north wind, north", which, according to Ovid, was personified as the son of the river-god Strymon, the father of Calais and Zetes. Septentrionalis is from septentriones, "the seven plow oxen", a name of Ursa Maior. The Greek arktikos is named for the same constellation, and is the derivation of the English word "Arctic".
Other languages have sometimes more interesting derivations. For example, in Lezgian, kefer can mean both 'disbelief' and 'north', since to the north of the Muslim Lezgian homeland there are areas formerly inhabited by non-Muslim Caucasian and Turkic peoples. In many languages of Mesoamerica, "north" also means "up". In Hungarian the word for north is észak, which is derived from éjszaka ("night"), since above the Tropic of Cancer, the Sun never shines from the north.
Alex is a common name used in multiple languages. In English, it is usually a diminutive of the male given name Alexander, or its female equivalent Alexandra or Alexandria. Aleck or Alec is the Scottish form of Alex. The East European male name Alexey (Aleksei, Alexis, Aleksa) is also sometimes shortened to Alex. It is a commonly used nickname in Spanish for Alejandro, Alexandro, Alejandrino and Alexandrino, and related names like Alexa and Alexis.
Mancini (Italian pronunciation: [maŋˈtʃini]) is a surname of Italian origin which, etymologically, comes from the Italian noun mancino, literally meaning "left handed". It may refer to:
The Space Odyssey series is a series of science fiction novels by the writer Arthur C. Clarke. Two of the novels have been made into feature films, released in 1968 and 1984 respectively. Two of Clarke's early short stories may also be considered part of the series.
Short stories:
Novels/Films:
The 2001 screenplay was written by Clarke and Stanley Kubrick jointly, based on the seed idea in "The Sentinel" that an alien civilization has left an object on the Moon to alert them to mankind's attainment of space travel. In addition, the 1953 short story "Encounter in the Dawn" contains elements of the first section of the film, in which the ancestors of humans are apparently given an evolutionary "nudge" by extraterrestrials. The opening part of another Clarke story, "Transience", has plot elements set in about the same time in human history, but is otherwise unrelated.
The first 36 seconds of Alex North's score of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?". At first, I thought I was in for another mysterious, jazz-based soundtrack in the vein of Michel Legrand or Henry Mancini, but unfortunately the rest of the score is very different. Also reminds me of "Escape from Xanthus" by Johnny Mandel (1975): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syu1IjNGdvU

My favorite play, written by Edward Albee. My favorite movie, directed by Mike Nichols. And also, my favorite soundtrack. Composed by Alex North. Does it get any better than this? No copyright infringement intended. This score was composed by Alex North, who also did the music for "Streetcar." I think he did an amazing job.
For the scene in which Moon-Watcher and his tribe are confronted by another ape tribe, this cue begins stealthily, growing in intensity and becoming genuinely angry. North wrote "barbaric" on his sketch.

Perhaps no other city has been as thoroughly hidden from modern filmmaking as Vancouver, my hometown. Today, it’s the third biggest film production city in North America, behind Los Angeles and New York. And yet for all the movies and TV shows that are shot there, we hardly ever see the city itself. So today, let’s focus less on the movies and more on the city in the background. Press the CC button to see movie names and locations. For educational purposes only. Founded by Isaac Brest and Alex Perweiler in 2008 when the pair and their founding members were still in art school, the Still House Group is a collective of young artists who have banded together not out of a desire for anonymity but for camraderie. The group runs a studio space in industrial Red Hook but has also installed a selection of their work at Mark Fletcher's gallery space at 24 Washington Square North. The exhibition is called "Here Comes," a teasing title that, as Brest explained, framed the show as a "survey of works" rather than anything with a specific theme, avoiding "closing down people's minds." ARTINFO spoke to Brest and Perweiler about the gallery show, then visited their sprawling studio space to talk about the difficulties of working as emerging artists.

Oh, my love, my darling,
I've hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time.
Time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much,
Are You Still Mine?
I need your love,
I need your love,
God speed your love to me!
Lonely rivers flow to the sea,
To the sea,
To the open arms of the sea.
Lonely rivers sigh,
"Wait for me, wait for me!"
I'll be coming home, wait for me!
Oh, my love, my darling,
I've hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time
Time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much,
Are You Still Mine?
I need your love,
I need your love,
God speed your love to me!
Lonely mountains gaze at the stars,
At the stars,
Waiting for the dawn of the day.
All alone, I gaze at the stars,
At the stars,
Dreaming of my love for away.
Oh, my love, my darling,
I've hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time.
Time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much,
Are You Still Mine?
I need your love,
I need your love,
