Alex North

Alex North (December 4, 1910 – September 8, 1991) was an American composer best known for his many film scores, including A Streetcar Named Desire (one of the first jazz-based film scores), Viva Zapata!, Spartacus, Cleopatra, and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. He was the first composer to receive an Honorary Academy Award.

Early life

North was born Isadore Soifer in Chester, Pennsylvania to Russian Jewish parents.

Career

North managed to integrate his modernism into typical film music leitmotif structure, rich with themes. One of these became the famous song, "Unchained Melody". Nominated for fifteen Oscars but unsuccessful each time, North is one of only two film composers to receive the Lifetime Achievement Academy Award, the other being Ennio Morricone. North's frequent collaborator as orchestrator was the avant-garde composer Henry Brant. He won the 1968 Golden Globe award for his music to The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968).

His best-known film scores include A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman, Viva Zapata!, The Rainmaker, Spartacus, The Misfits, Cleopatra, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Dragonslayer and Under the Volcano. His music for The Wonderful Country makes use of Mexican and American motifs.

Never Have I Ever

"Never Have I Ever", also known as "I've Never…" or "Ten Fingers", is a drinking game.

Rules

The verbal game is started with the players getting into a circle. Then, the first player says a simple statement starting with "Never have I ever". Anyone who has done what the first player has not must drink. Play then continues around the circle, and the next person makes a statement. An additional rule – uncommon, but beneficial to the game –is that if there is no one taking a drink, then the one who said the particular "I have never…" must take a drink. This rule often forces the players to strategize more and makes for less disposable/pointless suggestions.

A further variation holds that whenever only one person is drinking, that person must give a detailed account of why they are drinking. Another variation of this game involves putting up five or ten fingers, putting one down whenever something mentioned has been done. Those who end up putting down all of their fingers must take several successive drinks.

The Luka State

The Luka State are an "electronically enhanced"rock band from Winsford,Cheshire, in the North West of England, halfway between Manchester and Liverpool. They were formed in 2012 by Conrad Ellis (guitarist), Sam Bell (bass) and Jess Whitmore (drums) as a three-piece.

From late 2013 to mid-2014 the band released three singles: "Matter of Time", 30 Minute Break, and Rain; all three being recorded by Sam Williams, best known for discovering alt-rock band Supergrass. They were picked up by Vulture Hound, which called the group "the epitome of modern Rock-n-roll."

In 2014, Whitmore parted with founding members Ellis and Bell, the latter citing musical differences and leaving room for Jake Barnabas as drummer. This change coincided with a change to a more electronically enhanced sound, described by Clash as "all epic guitars and contagious synth lines".

With an ever-growing international following asking for new material the band headed to Edge Studios to record their debut mini album The Price of Education. The album was self produced alongside the band’s manager Jim de Whalley, and engineered by Mark Winterburn, who has worked with bands such as Plan B and Nine Black Alps. Additional bass production was contributed by Simon Edwards of Fairground Attraction with the final mix being done by Chris Sheldon, who had mixed Foo Fighters' The Colour and the Shape whilst producing Feeder and Oceansize.

Ruth B

Ruth Berhe (born 1995), better known as Ruth B, is a Canadian singer-songwriter from Edmonton, Alberta. She started by singing songs on Vine in early 2013. In January 2015, she released her debut single, "Lost Boy", which first started off as a singing Vine she had made up. In November 2015, she released her debut EP, The Intro. She is signed with Columbia Records.

Berhe is also of Eritrean descent, as mentioned in one of her previous videos.

She graduated from Ross Sheppard High School in 2013. She attended MacEwan University, taking time off her studies to focus on music. where Ruth continued her education in Winnipeg, Manitoba before she started her singing career.

Career

Berhe posted her first Vine video on May 9, 2013, and started making singing Vines about a year later. Her singing Vines, typically six second covers of popular songs, helped grow her a following. In November 2014, she posted a Vine of her singing a line that she had made up, which was inspired by the television series Once Upon a Time. It garnered around 84,000 likes within a week, which was unusual for her at the time. She took note of its popularity, with some of her followers commenting that she should make it into a full song. It became into "Lost Boy", which she posted on YouTube on January 18, 2015 and was released on iTunes on February 12, 2015. Dozens of Vine and YouTube users posted covers, which helped further its popularity and increased Berhe's following on social media. Records labels took notice and she decided to sign with Columbia Records in July 2015.

Lost Boy

Lost Boy is the second full-length album by American metalcore band MyChildren MyBride. It was released on June 8, 2010 through Solid State Records. The album was recorded at Glow in the Dark Studios in Atlanta, Georgia and produced by Matt Goldman.

Review

Christian metalcore outfit MyChildren MyBride's sophomore effort rises above its 2008 predecessor with a more adventurous approach to the genre. The basic tenets of the style (toneless screaming and staccato riffs layered over a foundation of tight, dry, double kick drum pedal bursts) are well represented on Lost Boy, but the machine screw production and tone-deaf melodic structures that often accompany those parameters are not. Guitarists Robert Bloomfield and Daniel Alvarado know how to grind out basic jackhammer riffs, but they also know how to take those riffs and bend them into something real, melodic, and surprisingly progressive. Standout cuts like “Hooligans” and “Redeemer” benefit from the old-school punk gang vocals, and producer Matt Goldman (Underoath, the Chariot) allots vocalist Matthew Hasting's voice (which is surprisingly effective and utterly devoid of Cookie Monster posturing) the room it needs to be heard, resulting in another strong outing for both the band and the increasingly “solid” Solid State Records.
