Ray Winstone stars in one of the most violent, explosive and controversial British films of all time. After assaulting a warder, young offender Carlin (Ray Winstone) is transferred to a tough British borstal where the staff decide to break him - with savage and relentless violence. At the same time, the existing 'Daddy' on Carlin's prison wing, Banks (John Blundell) - the thug who controls all the other inmates - sees the newcomer as a threat and singles him out for more vicious beatings to smash him down. Now Carlin knows that there is only one way to survive. He must fight back, destroy Banks -- and become the new 'Daddy' on the wing... Based on an original TV play that was banned by the BBC for its graphic violence and sexual content, Scum remains as shocking and powerful today as the day it was first released. Scum has been fully restored and graded at 2K from the original negatives by Pinewood Studios and includes the original audio mix and newly created 5.1 surround mix.

Thee warden decides to relax and offers the philosophical inmate called Archer , a coffee and a chat, secure in his position of institutionalised power and his superiority over the inmate Archer.
He offers advice to Archer about what he perceives are Archers problems inside the borstal , and reflects a little on his own dutiful occupation
But during this chat, Archer decides to take an existential observation of himself and the warden, and in doing so, holds a mirror up to the wardens true position in the heirarchy of power, cuts right through the wardens hermetically sealed deluded persona which shreds him bare naked on the table of true achievement
The warden refuses to consider this " philosophical expose " of their circumstances and erupts with anger back into his conditioned persona .

Scum (film)
Scum is a 1979 British crime drama film directed by Alan Clarke, portraying the brutality of life inside a British borstal. The script was originally made for the BBC's Play for Today strand in 1977, however due to the violence depicted, it was withdrawn from broadcast. Two years later, director Alan Clarke and scriptwriter Roy Minton remade it as a film, first shown on Channel 4 in 1983. By this time the borstal system had been reformed and eventually allowed the original TV version to be aired.
The film tells the story of a young offender named Carlin as he arrives at the institution and his rise through violence and self-protection to the top of the inmates' pecking order, purely as a tool to survive. Beyond Carlin's individual storyline, it is also cast as an indictment of the borstal system's flaws with no attempt at rehabilitation. The warders and convicts alike are brutalised by the system. The film's controversy was derived from its graphic depiction of racism, extreme violence, rape, suicide, many fights and very strong language.
