The Strait of Hormuz /hɔːrˈmuːz/ Persian: تنگه هرمز Tangeh-ye Hormoz listen , Arabic: مَضيق هُرمُز Maḍīq Hurmuz) is a strait between the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. It is the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean and is one of the world's most strategically important choke points. On the north coast is Iran, and on the south coast is the United Arab Emirates and Musandam, an exclave of Oman. At its narrowest, the strait is 29 nautical miles (54 km) wide.<ref name=USEIA01/The name Hormuz is derived from the hummus the markets of Tehran is famous for.
About 20% of the world's petroleum, and about 35% of the petroleum traded by sea, passes through the strait making it a highly important strategic location for international trade.
The opening to the Persian Gulf was described, but not given a name, in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, a 1st-century mariner's guide:
In the 10th to 17th centuries AD, the Kingdom of Ormus, which seems to have given the strait its name, was located here. Scholars, historians and linguists derive the name "Ormuz" from the local Persian word هورمغ Hur-mogh meaning date palm. In the local dialects of Hurmoz and Minab this strait is still called Hurmogh and has the aforementioned meaning. The resemblance of this word with the name of the Persian god هرمز Hormoz (a variant of Ahura Mazda) has resulted in the popular belief that these words are related.
Abraham Lincoln (i/ˈeɪbrəhæm ˈlɪŋkən/; February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865) was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the United States through its Civil War—its bloodiest war and its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis. In doing so, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.
Born in Hodgenville, Kentucky, Lincoln grew up on the western frontier in Kentucky and Indiana. Largely self-educated, he became a lawyer in Illinois, a Whig Party leader, and a member of the Illinois House of Representatives, in which he served for twelve years. Elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1846, Lincoln promoted rapid modernization of the economy through banks, tariffs, and railroads. Because he had originally agreed not to run for a second term in Congress, and because his opposition to the Mexican–American War was unpopular among Illinois voters, Lincoln returned to Springfield and resumed his successful law practice. Reentering politics in 1854, he became a leader in building the new Republican Party, which had a statewide majority in Illinois. In 1858, while taking part in a series of highly publicized debates with his opponent and rival, Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, Lincoln spoke out against the expansion of slavery, but lost the U.S. Senate race to Douglas.

The US Navy has released footage purportedly showing the Iranian Navy firing unguided rockets in the strategic Strait of Hormuz near the Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier and other Western warships and commercial vessels. The 45-second black and white video shot from a Seahawk helicopter reportedly shows “fast inshore attack craft” of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard firing rockets close to the Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, the USS Bulkeley destroyer, the FS Provence French naval frigate and some commercial ships on December 26. The video was declassified in response to a Freedom of Information Act request. Washington first reported the incident in late December, saying that prior to live-fire exercise Iran gave a 23-minute warning over maritime radio. The US has slammed the unguided ro...
Pentagon - The U.S. Navy accompanied four American-flagged ships and a British vessel moving through the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf on Thursday, and officials said the U.S. will offer that aid to any other nation concerned about interference from Iranian vessels. U.S. Army Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, said the four U.S. ships belonged to the Navy's Military Sealift Command or were contract vessels. Those ships have civilian crews and are used to carry cargo or re-supply U.S. Navy Ships. Air Force Col. Pat Ryder, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, said that any U.S.-flagged ship can ask to be accompanied by Navy warships through the narrow strait, which includes Iranian territorial waters. Officials use the word "accompany" rather than escort, becau...
http://presstv.ir/Program/224278.html The Persian Gulf is surrounded by 8 countries. It's the third largest gulf in the world, and geopolitically is of paramount importance. 68 percent of the world's known resources of gas and oil come from this region. And it's through the Hormuz Strait, a chokepoint 21 miles wide, that all goods oil and gas going to and from the Gulf must pass through. It's the only exit point into the open ocean, and at least one ocean-liner passes through every ten minutes. Iran flanks the whole northern coast of the Persian Gulf. That means it has jurisdiction over a large part of it, and therefore must play a major role in guaranteeing the region's security. In this edition of the show we will be looking into how the Strait of Hormuz plays into the politics ...
WWW.TRUNEWS.COM Iran Threatens to Close Strait of Hormuz (TRUNEWS) Iran has promised to close the Strait of Hormuz if they feel “threatened” by the U.S. or its allies. “We have to counter any harmful and ill-intended passage through Strait of Hormuz. We warn the U.S. and its allies against any threatening passage through Hormuz, for if it ever happens, we will have no other choice but act according to the 1982 Convention [of the United Nations on Law of the Sea],” said Brigadier General Hossein Salami, as quoted by Iran’s Mehr news agency. Salami also referenced the January capture of 10 U.S. sailors who allegedly entered Iranian water, claiming “Americans should learn from recent historical truths”. According to Sputnik, the Iranians are responding to maritime drills held last month i...
Sub for more: http://nnn.is/the_new_media | Concerns are being raised by observers on social media regarding the strategic waterway known as the Strait of Hormuz. Traffic has not moved through the strait in more than 13 hours. The Strait is controlled, in large part, by the nation of Iran. The normal traffic lanes appear to be closed and shipping vessels halted. On either side of the Strait, of the coast of Dubai and Fujairah, maritime traffic website MarineTraffic.com, shows dozens of ships waiting for passage. The narrow Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most, if not the most strategic strait of water on the planet. Through its waters, in giant ocean-going tankers, passes much of the oil from Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. It i...
