Under pressure from finite fossil fuel reserves and scrutiny from the West, Iran's Nuclear program has had a difficult road. This is the story of Iranian nuclear energy told from the other side.
"Iran has tried its best to have a pragmatic approach, not an ambitious approach", claims the country's ambassador to the IAEA, Ali Asghar Soltanieh. But are all such claims destined to fall on deaf ears? A climate of suspicion and hostility has historically smothered any meaningful discussion of Iran's right to nuclear technologies. The West accuse Iran of creating a 'confidence deficit' by pursuing a clandestine programme of enrichment; Iran sense hypocrisy, and claim to be singled out. "There are similar cases with Taiwan, with Egypt, with Brazil, and all of these countries get away with it."
Ultimately, all parties acknowledge that a system that enshrines the right of the powerful to bend the rules is unsustainable. "The whole of the non-proliferation regime has elements of double-standards built into it", concedes David Hannay, a member of the House of Lords. But will this consensus signal a move beyond the rhetoric to purposeful negotiation? "Iran has an opportunity to become the good boy of the world."

Nuclear program of Iran
The nuclear program of Iran has included several research sites, two uranium mines, a research reactor, and uranium processing facilities that include three known uranium enrichment plants. Iran has signed treaties repudiating the possession of weapons of mass destruction including the Biological Weapons Convention and the Chemical Weapons Convention. It also ratified the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), making its nuclear program subject to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verification.
The program was launched in the 1950s with the help of the United States as part of the Atoms for Peace program. The participation of the United States and Western European governments in Iran's nuclear program continued until the 1979 Iranian Revolution that toppled the Shah of Iran. Following the 1979 Revolution, most of the international nuclear cooperation with Iran was cut off. In 1981, Iranian officials concluded that the country's nuclear development should continue. Negotiations took place with France in the late 1980s and with Argentina in the early 1990s, and agreements were reached. In the 1990s, Russia formed a joint research organization with Iran, providing Iran with Russian nuclear experts and technical information.

Iran (/aɪˈræn/ or

It is bordered to the northwest by Armenia, the de facto Nagorno-Karabakh, and Azerbaijan; with Kazakhstan and Russia across the Caspian Sea; to the northeast by Turkmenistan; to the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan; to the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman; and to the west by Turkey and Iraq. Comprising a land area of 1,648,195 km2 (636,372 sq mi), it is the second-largest country in the Middle East and the 18th-largest in the world. With 78.4 million inhabitants, Iran is the world's 17th-most-populous country. It is the only country that has both a Caspian Sea and an Indian Ocean coastline. Iran has long been of geostrategic importance because of its central location in Eurasia and Western Asia, and its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz.

Under pressure from finite fossil fuel reserves and scrutiny from the West, Iran's Nuclear program has had a difficult road. This is the story of Iranian nuclear energy told from the other side.
"Iran has tried its best to have a pragmatic approach, not an ambitious approach", claims the country's ambassador to the IAEA, Ali Asghar Soltanieh. But are all such claims destined to fall on deaf ears? A climate of suspicion and hostility has historically smothered any meaningful discussion of Iran's right to nuclear technologies. The West accuse Iran of creating a 'confidence deficit' by pursuing a clandestine programme of enrichment; Iran sense hypocrisy, and claim to be singled out. "There are similar cases with Taiwan, with Egypt, with Brazil, and all of these countries get away with it."
Ultimately, all parties acknowledge that a system that enshrines the right of the powerful to bend the rules is unsustainable. "The whole of the non-proliferation regime has elements of double-standards built into it", concedes David Hannay, a member of the House of Lords. But will this consensus signal a move beyond the rhetoric to purposeful negotiation? "Iran has an opportunity to become the good boy of the world."

After this a look at the history of Iran's nuclear program and the current standoff: the West's demands that Iran cease enriching, and Iran's refusal citing its inalienable right to a peaceful nuclear program under the NPT. And finally a look at the intelligence about Iran's nuclear program, and a little rhetorical jab at the end.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has warned the United States against reneging on its commitments under the nuclear deal between Tehran and the P5+1 groups of countries. Rouhani was speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York. The first debate will be divided into six time segments of approximately 15 minutes each on major topics to be selected by the moderator and announced at least one week before the debate. The moderator will open each segment with a question, after which each candidate will have two minutes to respond. Candidates will then have an opportunity to respond to each other. The moderator will use the balance of the time in the segment for a deeper discussion of the topic.
*Wright State University in Ohio has withdrawn from holding the First Presidential debate due to budget issues. Hofstra University will step in to host the first Clinton/Trump debate.
The dates and venues have been announced for the 2016 Presidential debates between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. The date for the Vice Presidential debate between Tim Kaine and Mike Pence has also been announced. Note the broadcast times and channels are identical for the Presidential debates and the Vice Presidential debate.
Tickets – Tickets for each debate are controlled by the hosting university and are extremely limited since the debates are primarily produced for television. The majority of tickets are distributed to host university students and faculty through a lottery system. See this page for all available ticketing details.
Live Streaming – All the major news networks will offer a free live stream as will YouTube and Twitter. Live stream links will be posted the day of the debate.
TV Channels – Each debate will be broadcast live on C-SPAN, ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, as well as all cable news channels including CNN, Fox News and MSNBC among others.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has warned the United States against reneging on its commitments under the nuclear deal between Tehran and the P5+1 groups of countries.
Rouhani was speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York. He stressed that the nuclear deal also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA confirms the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program and recognizes Tehran’s right to develop atomic energy. He also spoke of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. Rouhani said the 9/11 attacks led to wars and instability across the globe. He stated that the conflicts have bred border-less terrorism that can be blamed on the policy of world powers. The Iranian president said the same countries that claim to be fighting terrorists provide covert and overt support for Takfiri groups. He also called on Saudi Arabia to stop its divisive policies and the spread of what he called an ideology of hatred.

In November 2011, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors rebuked Iran following an IAEA report detailing how Iran had undertaken research and experiments geared to developing a nuclear weapons capability. For the first time, the IAEA report outlines, in depth, the country's detonator development, the multiple-point initiation of high explosives, and experiments involving nuclear payload integration into a missile delivery vehicle.[Iran rejected the details of the report and accused the IAEA of pro-Western bias and threatened to reduce its cooperation with the IAEA

"We have one million patients struggling with cancer and they need regular isotopes", argues Iran's ambassador for the IAEA, dr Ali Soltanieh. Experts are quick to dismiss this reasoning, saying Iran's reactor at Natanz is, "too big, too far from hospitals and too secretive". Yet in this report the former director of the IAEA, Robert Kelley, admits that the famously leaked 2009 IAEA document, supposedly offering proof of Iran's nuclear ambitions, is likely to be a forgery. Whatever the truth, Israel is growing increasingly twitchy. "Israel must reserve the right to defend itself", Netanyahu has publicly announced. But is his rhetoric leading towards military confrontation? "Once you make those kind of threats, you come to the point where you've got to show you're serious". Yet Ronen Bergen, an expert on the Israeli secret service, insists that if it had been up to Israel, Iran would have had an atom bomb years ago. He describes how during the 1970s Israel actively encouraged Iran to move towards nuclear armament. "Israel was knowingly helping Iran to build the vehicle for a nuclear bomb". Despite current international pressure, Iran isn't shying away from fighting talk. The suggestion of heavy interference in their nuclear plans is met with a chilling riposte: "We will teach them a lesson they will never forget in history".

"We have one million patients struggling with cancer and they need regular isotopes", argues Iran's ambassador for the IAEA, dr Ali Soltanieh. Experts are quick to dismiss this reasoning, saying Iran's reactor at Natanz is, "too big, too far from hospitals and too secretive". Yet in this report the former director of the IAEA, Robert Kelley, admits that the famously leaked 2009 IAEA document, supposedly offering proof of Iran's nuclear ambitions, is likely to be a forgery. Whatever the truth, Israel is growing increasingly twitchy. "Israel must reserve the right to defend itself", Netanyahu has publicly announced. But is his rhetoric leading towards military confrontation? "Once you make those kind of threats, you come to the point where you've got to show you're serious". Yet Ronen Bergen, an expert on the Israeli secret service, insists that if it had been up to Israel, Iran would have had an atom bomb years ago. He describes how during the 1970s Israel actively encouraged Iran to move towards nuclear armament. "Israel was knowingly helping Iran to build the vehicle for a nuclear bomb". Despite current international pressure, Iran isn't shying away from fighting talk. The suggestion of heavy interference in their nuclear plans is met with a chilling riposte: "We will teach them a lesson they will never forget in history".
