The nuclear program of Iran has included several research sites, two uranium mines, a research reactor, and uranium processing facilities that include three known uranium enrichment plants. Iran has signed treaties repudiating the possession of weapons of mass destruction including the Biological Weapons Convention and the Chemical Weapons Convention. It also ratified the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), making its nuclear program subject to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verification.
The program was launched in the 1950s with the help of the United States as part of the Atoms for Peace program. The participation of the United States and Western European governments in Iran's nuclear program continued until the 1979 Iranian Revolution that toppled the Shah of Iran. Following the 1979 Revolution, most of the international nuclear cooperation with Iran was cut off. In 1981, Iranian officials concluded that the country's nuclear development should continue. Negotiations took place with France in the late 1980s and with Argentina in the early 1990s, and agreements were reached. In the 1990s, Russia formed a joint research organization with Iran, providing Iran with Russian nuclear experts and technical information.
Iran (/aɪˈræn/ or i/ɪˈrɑːn/;Persian: Irān – ایران [ʔiːˈɾɒːn]), also known as Persia (/ˈpɜːrʒə/ or /ˈpɜːrʃə/), officially the Islamic Republic of Iran (جمهوری اسلامی ایران – Jomhuri ye Eslāmi ye Irān [d͡ʒomhuːˌɾije eslɒːˌmije ʔiːˈɾɒːn]), is a country in Western Asia. It is bordered to the northwest by Armenia, the de facto Nagorno-Karabakh, and Azerbaijan; with Kazakhstan and Russia across the Caspian Sea; to the northeast by Turkmenistan; to the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan; to the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman; and to the west by Turkey and Iraq. Comprising a land area of 1,648,195 km2 (636,372 sq mi), it is the second-largest country in the Middle East and the 18th-largest in the world. With 78.4 million inhabitants, Iran is the world's 17th-most-populous country. It is the only country that has both a Caspian Sea and an Indian Ocean coastline. Iran has long been of geostrategic importance because of its central location in Eurasia and Western Asia, and its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has warned the United States against reneging on its commitments under the nuclear deal between Tehran and the P5+1 groups of countries. Rouhani was speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York. He stressed that the nuclear deal also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA confirms the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program and recognizes Tehran’s right to develop atomic energy. He also spoke of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. Rouhani said the 9/11 attacks led to wars and instability across the globe. He stated that the conflicts have bred border-less terrorism that can be blamed on the policy of world powers. The Iranian president said the same countries that claim to be fighting terrorists provide covert and overt support ...
Sanctions Won't End Iran's Nuclear Program, Bombing them sooner rather than later is the way to go
The Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs held a lecture entitled: The Geopolitics of Iran's Nuclear Program with Vijay Prashad IFI's Senior Research Fellow
Lawrence Husick Senior Fellow · The 17th largest country in the world, the Islamic Republic of Iran commands attention not just because of its burgeoning nuclear program but because of its many roles in world affairs -- as the most important state sponsor of terrorism, as leader of the "rejectionist front" vis-à-vis the Israel-Palestine conflict, as the inspiration for radical Islam elsewhere in the Muslim world. There is also the matter of its suppression of the Green Movement in 2009 and ever since. In this intensive weekend-long conference for high school teachers, we looked at Iran in its larger historical, cultural, and geopolitical context, with lectures by the best scholars in the country.

The participation of the United States and Western European governments in Iran's nuclear program continued until the 1979 Iranian Revolution that toppled the Shah of Iran. After the 1979 revolution, the Iranian government temporarily disbanded elements of the program, and then revived it with less Western assistance than during the pre-revolution era. Iran's nuclear program has included several research sites, two uranium mines, a research reactor, and uranium processing facilities that include three known uranium enrichment plants. After delays, Iran's first nuclear power plant, Bushehr I reactor was complete with major assistance of Russian government agen...
Islamic Republic of Iran, is not known to currently possess weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and has signed treaties repudiating the possession of weapons of mass destruction including the Biological Weapons Convention,[1] the Chemical Weapons Convention, and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Iran has first-hand knowledge of WMD effects—over 100,000 Iranian troops and civilians were victims of chemical weapons during the 1980s Iran–Iraq War.[4][5] On ideological grounds, a public and categorical religious decree (fatwa) against the development, production, stockpiling and use of nuclear weapons has been issued by the Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with other clerics,[6][7] though it is approved by some relatively minor clerics. Iran has stated its uranium en...
