History was made in Frankfort as the Bicentennial Torch Relay, which is symbolic of Indiana’s 200th birthday celebration, came to downtown Frankfort Thursday afternoon in front of nearly 500 fourth-grade students from around the county plus a huge crowd of adults. Healthy Communities of Clinton County Coalition Operations Manager Lorra Archibald said the event was successful. “Actually, despite last minute changes made by the Torch Relay Committee, it went better than I thought it could have,” said Archibald. “I think it was an enjoyable time, it was educational for the kids and that’s what we really wanted.” VIDEO of the entire event as seen on WILO TV from the second floor over Ellis Jewelers “We had 498 fourth-graders here from all four county schools plus a huge crowd of other people that I wasn’t really expecting,” said Archibald. “That was a nice surprise.” The ceremony included the Pledge of Allegiance and the “Star-Spangled Banner”, fourth-graders signing “Back Home Again in Indiana”, and Mayor Chris McBarnes addressing the students about the bicentennial and also issuing a proclamation. The event concluded with the all-county choir singing “On the Banks of the Wabash” and everyone singing “Happy Birthday” to the state. McBarnes, who was of the 22 torchbearers for the event, said the experience was beyond words. “What a honor to carry the Bicentennial Torch through downtown Frankfort,” said McBarnes. “I was able to pick it up from Bud Wainscott at the corner of Jackson and Clinton and then walked it around the square to the west and stopped on Washington Street.
