Heading back to Finland - and specifically Helsinki - was our greatest surprise this summer. As the capital city, it has the attractions any big city offers, yet it somehow retains plenty of small town charm. One of the main reasons is that you're never far from nature. With its long days and short nights, summertime is a great time to be in Helsinki. This was our second visit to the Finnish capital, and we were excited as ever to experience it for a couple of days. With summer in full swing, we enjoyed dinners al fresco, boat trips to nearby islands, and lots of walking around town. Here's a look at how we spent our time in Helsinki:
This is a city that comes alive during the summer months, and it was great enjoying all the events taking place in the city as well as relaxing outdoors. We loved revisiting Helsinki and we discovered so many new places that we had completely skipped over the first time around.

Flight layovers can be an awesome opportunity to explore a new city, and this is exactly what happened here. I had 24 hours in Helsinki, Finland to explore the city in between my flight from London and my flight to Gdansk. I stayed at the Hilton airport hotel over night as my flight from London arrived quite late. I made sure I woke pretty early the next day so I could have a good few hours of exploring the city. I took the new airport train which took about 20 minutes into the city costing 4 euros each way. Getting into Helsinki central station you think it's firstly quite a modern building but upon entering the main area it's got a really cool art deco feel to it.
After checking the Trip Advisor app to ensure I was heading in the right direction I came across a gorgeous park in the centre of town. There also was a bunch of live music and a market on which I investigated. It was like a British car boot sale but instead in a park!
I then passed a floating market selling fresh seafood and then went onto the pier to get my first look at this gorgeous city. Wow Helsinki you are amazing! I could see where I'd been walking and the three main areas I wanted to see, which as you'll see in the video were: the Uspenski Cathedral, Helsinki wheel, and the Senate Square where I was able to explore the main Helsinki Cathedral.

En esta ocasión hemos estado en Helsinki, la capital de Finlandia, llamada la "Hija del Báltico" y y considerada como uno de los lugares con mayor calidad de vida del mundo. Cuenta con apenas 600.000 habitantes, ha recibido influencia sueca y rusa a lo largo de la historia, y se trata de una ciudad alegre que aprovecha al máximo el buen tiempo.
Quedamos con José María en Senaatintori (la Plaza del Senado), centro neurálgico de Helsinki y punto de encuentro para propios y extraños, donde se encuentran edificios administrativos y la Catedral Blanca.
También visitamos la otra catedral de la ciudad, la ortodoxa de Uspenski, la más grande de Europa, y la estación de ferrocarril de inspiración soviética de 1919.
Paseamos por la calle principal de la ciudad, Mannerheimintie, y en medio del bullicio encontramos un oasis de paz, la llamada Capilla del Silencio, construida en madera.
Otro de los puntos de interés de nuestro viaje es Kalatasama, un antiguo barrio industrial que se ha convertido en una de las principales atracciones para los jóvenes que buscan pasar un buen rato y algo para tomar.
QUIÉN DIJO FRÍO
En Porvoo, a una hora de Helsinki, conocemos a Ángel, un sumiller muy reconocido en la capital que ha abierto su propio negocio. Porvoo es la segunda ciudad más antigua de Finlandia, conocida por sus características casitas rojas. De vuelta a la capital, paseamos por Aleksanterinkatu, otras de las avenidas principales, donde se encuentran las principales tiendas y firmas comerciales, y que curiosamente está siempre seca en invierno gracias a un sistema de calefacción subterráneo.
Conocemos también algunas curiosidades como un Burger King con sauna o un tranvía convertido en pub. Y por supuesto visitamos su negocio, El Fant, cafetería de día y bar de vinos por la noche, y que ofrece ahora mismo el considerado mejor brunch de la ciudad. Nos despedimos en el hotel Torni, el más destacado de Helsinki, que sirvió como torre de vigilancia para avistar aviones durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y que ofrece unas preciosas vistas.
Visitamos Kauppatori, la Plaza del Mercado, junto al puerto, donde podemos encontrar comida, bebida y artesanía. Y en otro mercado, Vanha Kauppahalli, encontramos el puesto El Mercado, que Jaime, nuestro siguiente madrileño, tiene en Helsinki, donde ofrece productos españoles.
Otro de los lugares que se ha puesto de moda en la ciudad es Löyly, sauna y restaurante en un moderno edificio construido sólo con madera, y situado en el barrio más exclusivo.
Por último, Clara nos recibe en Suomenlinna, isla Patrimonio de la Humanidad que sirvió como fortaleza para defenderse de la armada rusa. De vuelta a la capital, visitamos la curiosa Iglesia de Piedra y la antigua prisión, convertida en 2002 en un hotel de lujo, el Katajanokka. Y en la cuna del heavy metal, nada mejor para despedirnos que acudir al festival de rock de Korso, un pequeño pueblo a solo media hora de la capital.

So this video I worked really hard on and it took me AGES to complete! Seriously, like a week total!! Whew! But I'm pretty happy with the result and hopefully it's a least mildly interesting. A lot of people were requesting an informative guide on Helsinki or things to do in Helsinki so I finally made one! :D

I had 24 hours in Helsinki, Finland to explore the city in between my flight from London and my flight to Gdansk. I stayed at the Hilton airport hotel over night as my flight from London arrived quite late. I made sure I woke pretty early the next day so I could have a good few hours of exploring the city. I took the new airport train which took about 20 minutes into the city costing 4 euros each way. Getting into Helsinki central station you think it's firstly quite a modern building but upon entering the main area it's got a really cool art deco feel to it. After checking the Trip Advisor app to ensure I was heading in the right direction I came across a gorgeous park in the centre of town. There also was a bunch of live music and a market on which I investigated. It was like a British car boot sale but instead in a park! I then passed a floating market selling fresh seafood and then went onto the pier to get my first look at this gorgeous city. Wow Helsinki you are amazing! I could see where I'd been walking and the three main areas I wanted to see, which as you'll see in the video were: the Uspenski Cathedral, Helsinki wheel, and the Senate Square where I was able to explore the main Helsinki Cathedral. Cuenta con apenas 600.000 habitantes, ha recibido influencia sueca y rusa a lo largo de la historia, y se trata de una ciudad alegre que aprovecha al máximo el buen tiempo. Quedamos con José María en Senaatintori (la Plaza del Senado), centro neurálgico de Helsinki y punto de encuentro para propios y extraños, donde se encuentran edificios administrativos y la Catedral Blanca. También visitamos la otra catedral de la ciudad, la ortodoxa de Uspenski, la más grande de Europa, y la estación de ferrocarril de inspiración soviética de 1919. Paseamos por la calle principal de la ciudad, Mannerheimintie, y en medio del bullicio encontramos un oasis de paz, la llamada Capilla del Silencio, construida en madera. Otro de los puntos de interés de nuestro viaje es Kalatasama, un antiguo barrio industrial que se ha convertido en una de las principales atracciones para los jóvenes que buscan pasar un buen rato y algo para tomar. QUIÉN DIJO FRÍO En Porvoo, a una hora de Helsinki, conocemos a Ángel, un sumiller muy reconocido en la capital que ha abierto su propio negocio. Porvoo es la segunda ciudad más antigua de Finlandia, conocida por sus características casitas rojas. De vuelta a la capital, paseamos por Aleksanterinkatu, otras de las avenidas principales, donde se encuentran las principales tiendas y firmas comerciales, y que curiosamente está siempre seca en invierno gracias a un sistema de calefacción subterráneo. Conocemos también algunas curiosidades como un Burger King con sauna o un tranvía convertido en pub. Y por supuesto visitamos su negocio, El Fant, cafetería de día y bar de vinos por la noche, y que ofrece ahora mismo el considerado mejor brunch de la ciudad. Nos despedimos en el hotel Torni, el más destacado de Helsinki, que sirvió como torre de vigilancia para avistar aviones durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y que ofrece unas preciosas vistas. Visitamos Kauppatori, la Plaza del Mercado, junto al puerto, donde podemos encontrar comida, bebida y artesanía. Y en otro mercado, Vanha Kauppahalli, encontramos el puesto El Mercado, que Jaime, nuestro siguiente madrileño, tiene en Helsinki, donde ofrece productos españoles. Otro de los lugares que se ha puesto de moda en la ciudad es Löyly, sauna y restaurante en un moderno edificio construido sólo con madera, y situado en el barrio más exclusivo. Por último, Clara nos recibe en Suomenlinna, isla Patrimonio de la Humanidad que sirvió como fortaleza para defenderse de la armada rusa. De vuelta a la capital, visitamos la curiosa Iglesia de Piedra y la antigua prisión, convertida en 2002 en un hotel de lujo, el Katajanokka. Y en la cuna del heavy metal, nada mejor para despedirnos que acudir al festival de rock de Korso, un pequeño pueblo a solo media hora de la capital. -

With its long days and short nights, summertime is a great time to be in Helsinki. This was our second visit to the Finnish capital, and we were excited as ever to experience it for a couple of days. With summer in full swing, we enjoyed dinners al fresco, boat trips to nearby islands, and lots of walking around town. Here's a look at how we spent our time in Helsinki:
This is a city that comes alive during the summer months, and it was great enjoying all the events taking place in the city as well as relaxing outdoors. We loved revisiting Helsinki and we discovered so many new places that we had completely skipped over the first time around.

Flight layovers can be an awesome opportunity to explore a new city, and this is exactly what happened here. I had 24 hours in Helsinki, Finland to explore the city in between my flight from London and my flight to Gdansk. I stayed at the Hilton airport hotel over night as my flight from London arrived quite late. I made sure I woke pretty early the next day so I could have a good few hours of exploring the city. I took the new airport train which took about 20 minutes into the city costing 4 euros each way. Getting into Helsinki central station you think it's firstly quite a modern building but upon entering the main area it's got a really cool art deco feel to it.
After checking the Trip Advisor app to ensure I was heading in the right direction I came across a gorgeous park in the centre of town. There also was a bunch of live music and a market on which I investigated. It was like a British car boot sale but instead in a park!
I then passed a floating market selling fresh seafood and then went onto the pier to get my first look at this gorgeous city. Wow Helsinki you are amazing! I could see where I'd been walking and the three main areas I wanted to see, which as you'll see in the video were: the Uspenski Cathedral, Helsinki wheel, and the Senate Square where I was able to explore the main Helsinki Cathedral.
Checkout the video and let me know what you think, but for a few hours in the city I think I managed to fit quite a lot in!

I then passed a floating market selling fresh seafood and then went onto the pier to get my first look at this gorgeous city. Wow Helsinki you are amazing! I could see where I'd been walking and the three main areas I wanted to see, which as you'll see in the video were: the Uspenski Cathedral, Helsinki wheel, and the Senate Square where I was able to explore the main Helsinki Cathedral.
Checkout the video and let me know what you think, but for a few hours in the city I think I managed to fit quite a lot in!

En esta ocasión hemos estado en Helsinki, la capital de Finlandia, llamada la "Hija del Báltico" y y considerada como uno de los lugares con mayor calidad de vida del mundo. Cuenta con apenas 600.000 habitantes, ha recibido influencia sueca y rusa a lo largo de la historia, y se trata de una ciudad alegre que aprovecha al máximo el buen tiempo.
Quedamos con José María en Senaatintori (la Plaza del Senado), centro neurálgico de Helsinki y punto de encuentro para propios y extraños, donde se encuentran edificios administrativos y la Catedral Blanca.
También visitamos la otra catedral de la ciudad, la ortodoxa de Uspenski, la más grande de Europa, y la estación de ferrocarril de inspiración soviética de 1919.
Paseamos por la calle principal de la ciudad, Mannerheimintie, y en medio del bullicio encontramos un oasis de paz, la llamada Capilla del Silencio, construida en madera.
Otro de los puntos de interés de nuestro viaje es Kalatasama, un antiguo barrio industrial que se ha convertido en una de las principales atracciones para los jóvenes que buscan pasar un buen rato y algo para tomar.
QUIÉN DIJO FRÍO
En Porvoo, a una hora de Helsinki, conocemos a Ángel, un sumiller muy reconocido en la capital que ha abierto su propio negocio. Porvoo es la segunda ciudad más antigua de Finlandia, conocida por sus características casitas rojas. De vuelta a la capital, paseamos por Aleksanterinkatu, otras de las avenidas principales, donde se encuentran las principales tiendas y firmas comerciales, y que curiosamente está siempre seca en invierno gracias a un sistema de calefacción subterráneo.
Conocemos también algunas curiosidades como un Burger King con sauna o un tranvía convertido en pub. Y por supuesto visitamos su negocio, El Fant, cafetería de día y bar de vinos por la noche, y que ofrece ahora mismo el considerado mejor brunch de la ciudad. Nos despedimos en el hotel Torni, el más destacado de Helsinki, que sirvió como torre de vigilancia para avistar aviones durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y que ofrece unas preciosas vistas.
Visitamos Kauppatori, la Plaza del Mercado, junto al puerto, donde podemos encontrar comida, bebida y artesanía. Y en otro mercado, Vanha Kauppahalli, encontramos el puesto El Mercado, que Jaime, nuestro siguiente madrileño, tiene en Helsinki, donde ofrece productos españoles.
Otro de los lugares que se ha puesto de moda en la ciudad es Löyly, sauna y restaurante en un moderno edificio construido sólo con madera, y situado en el barrio más exclusivo.
Por último, Clara nos recibe en Suomenlinna, isla Patrimonio de la Humanidad que sirvió como fortaleza para defenderse de la armada rusa. De vuelta a la capital, visitamos la curiosa Iglesia de Piedra y la antigua prisión, convertida en 2002 en un hotel de lujo, el Katajanokka. Y en la cuna del heavy metal, nada mejor para despedirnos que acudir al festival de rock de Korso, un pequeño pueblo a solo media hora de la capital.

Helsinki, the Daughter of the Baltic, the Gibraltar of the North, a dividing line between east and west and a modern and liberal minded metropolis. Founded in 1550 by Swedish king Gustav I as a as a trading centre and in 1812, Csar Alexander I made it the capital of the Principality of Finland.
The Senaatintori is located in the centre of the city. The square is dominated by a monument and surrounded by a number of fine Neo-Classical buildings. Csar Alexander II included public, ecclesiastical and academic buildings in the square, including government offices, a cathedral and university.
Uspenski Cathedral is situated at the city's southern harbor and is the largest Russian Orthodox church in both western and northern Europe. Built in 1868 according to traditional Russian design its exterior is of red brick and it is crowned by 13 gilded domes.
The Finlandia Talo is Helsinki's concert and congress centre, a work of art that encapsulates the building and design philosophy of Alvar Aalto, one of Finland's most prominent architects of the 20th century. The white-colored opera house was completed in 1993. It was a daring project as the city's treasury was empty! But music reigned supreme and today the building is an important part of the city's cultural life.
Helsinki is a captivating city and has rightly been declared Europe's capital of culture.

This film is a result of a couple of days in Finland's capital Helsinki. All I knew about Finns before the trip was their reputation as heavy drinkers. They did not disappoint. I almost struggled to keep up.
Helsinki is tons more fun than the other northern European capitals (Oslo, Stockholm) so I highly recommend a visit. The Finns are much cooler people too and not as politically correct. They can take a joke. At least most of them...
