A botanical garden or botanic garden is a garden dedicated to the collection, cultivation and display of a wide range of plants labelled with their botanical names. It may contain specialist plant collections such as cacti and succulent plants, herb gardens, plants from particular parts of the world, and so on; there may be greenhouses, shadehouses, again with special collections such as tropical plants, alpine plants, or other exotic plants. Visitor services at a botanical garden might include tours, educational displays, art exhibitions, book rooms, open-air theatrical and musical performances, and other entertainment.
Botanical gardens are often run by universities or other scientific research organizations, and often have associated herbaria and research programmes in plant taxonomy or some other aspect of botanical science. In principle, their role is to maintain documented collections of living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display, and education, although this will depend on the resources available and the special interests pursued at each particular garden.
The Desert Botanical Garden is a 140 acres (57 ha) botanical garden located in Papago Park, at 1201 N. Galvin Parkway in Phoenix, central Arizona.
Founded by the Arizona Cactus and Native Flora Society in 1937 and established at this site in 1939, the garden now has more than 21,000 plants, in more than 4000 taxa, one-third of which are native to the area, including 139 species which are rare, threatened or endangered.
Of special note are the rich collections of agave (176 taxa) and cacti (10,350 plants in 1,350 taxa), especially the Opuntia sub-family. Plants from less extreme climate conditions are protected under shadehouses. It focuses on plants adapted to desert conditions, including an Australian collection, a Baja California collection and a South American collection. Several ecosystems are represented: a mesquite bosque, semidesert grassland, and upland chaparral.
The Desert Botanical Garden has been designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride.
In the 1930s, a small group of local citizens became interested in conserving the fragile desert environment. One was Swedish botanist Gustaf Starck, who found like-minded residents by posting a sign, “Save the desert,” with an arrow pointing to his home. In 1936, they formed the Arizona Cactus and Native Flora Society (ACNFS) to sponsor a botanical garden to encourage an understanding, appreciation and promotion of the uniqueness of the world’s deserts, particularly the local Sonoran Desert.
A garden is a planned space, usually outdoors, set aside for the display, cultivation, and enjoyment of plants and other forms of nature. The garden can incorporate both natural and man-made materials. The most common form today is known as a residential garden, but the term garden has traditionally been a more general one. Zoos, which display wild animals in simulated natural habitats, were formerly called zoological gardens. Western gardens are almost universally based on plants, with garden often signifying a shortened form of botanical garden.
Some traditional types of eastern gardens, such as Zen gardens, use plants sparsely or not at all. Xeriscape gardens use local native plants that do not require irrigation or extensive use of other resources while still providing the benefits of a garden environment. Gardens may exhibit structural enhancements, sometimes called follies, including water features such as fountains, ponds (with or without fish), waterfalls or creeks, dry creek beds, statuary, arbors, trellises and more.
A desert is a barren area of land where little precipitation occurs and consequently living conditions are hostile for plant and animal life. The lack of vegetation exposes the unprotected surface of the ground to the processes of denudation. About one third of the land surface of the world is arid or semi-arid. This includes much of the polar regions where little precipitation occurs and which are sometimes called polar deserts or "cold deserts". Deserts can be classified by the amount of precipitation that falls, by the temperature that prevails, by the causes of desertification or by their geographical location.
Deserts are formed by weathering processes as large variations in temperature between day and night put strains on the rocks which consequently break in pieces. Although rain seldom occurs in deserts, there are occasional downpours that can result in flash floods. Rain falling on hot rocks can cause them to shatter and the resulting fragments and rubble strewn over the desert floor is further eroded by the wind. This picks up particles of sand and dust and wafts them aloft in sand or dust storms. Wind-blown sand grains striking any solid object in their path can abrade the surface. Rocks are smoothed down, and the wind sorts sand into uniform deposits. The grains end up as level sheets of sand or are piled high in billowing sand dunes. Other deserts are flat, stony plains where all the fine material has been blown away and the surface consists of a mosaic of smooth stones. These areas are known as desert pavements and little further erosion takes place. Other desert features include rock outcrops, exposed bedrock and clays once deposited by flowing water. Temporary lakes may form and salt pans may be left when waters evaporate. There may be underground sources of water in the form of springs and seepages from aquifers. Where these are found, oases can occur.

An initial project with the Sony DSC-RX100M3. The new video features this upgrade provides are very impressive. Though it requires newer SDXC memory cards, the XAVC codec is the standout feature. Edits much better than AVCHD in FCPX and provides big image improvement over the RX100M2. Possibly the RX10 as well. The LCD is much less fiddly and useful than the RX100M2. No more squeak and scrape when opening from bottom. The EVF is very useable for a compact. Better than hoped for. Easy to forget to pull the eyepiece out, but more use will make a habit. The ND may eliminate need for a polarizer for exteriors. Most of this project was shot with ND on. Zebras obviously minimize incorrect exposure issues. My RX100M2 had constant, slight focus pump issues with wide, distant landscape shots....
Springtime in the desert is a most glorious time. The cacti are in bloom and the air is filled with sage and lavender. Here at the Botanical Gardens in Phoenix Arizona, the desert comes alive even at night with magnificent lights.

Kiev decided to go to the Desert Botanical Gardens since the weather here was so nice. After walking around for over 3hrs and shooting video. He came back and edited it down to this. Kiev decided he wanted to present it as is,not as a series. He felt it would take away from the beauty and wonders of nature. We hope this puts a Smile on your face and a little Sunshine in your day. We hope everyone has a Happy and Safe Holidays. :=) Chickbit & :-) Kiev & the brood

In preparation for my upcoming permaculture design project near Phoenix, Arizona, I visited my friend Diane to learn about how she manages to grow a nice vegetable garden in Phoenix, despite the challenging climate and conditions. In addition to the veggie garden, Diane and her husband have created a beautiful oasis in their backyard with many desert appropriate trees, shrubs, and cacti. This environment attracts a great number of local wildlife, including many small birds, and has even become a favorite hunting ground for several birds of prey. The music used in the video is my own, which you can find at http://oneheartfire.bandcamp.com/ I am currently looking for volunteers to help with the Permaculture Bike Park project, and stay or live in the Ant Village. People, do you understand me now?
Sometimes I feel a little mad
Don't you know no one alive can always be an angel?
When things go wrong, I seem a little sad
But I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
You know sometimes, I'm so carefree
With a joy that's hard to hide
And sometimes seems that all I have is worry
And then you're bound to see my other side
But I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
If I seem edgy, I want you to know
That I never mean to take it out on you
Life has its problems and I get more than my share
But that's one thing I never mean to do
I don't mean it
People, don't you know I'm only human?
Don't you know I have thoughts like any one?
But sometimes I find myself alone regretting
Some little thing, some foolish thing
That I have done
But I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
Don't let me be misunderstood
I'm just someone whose intentions are good
Don't let me be misunderstood
