George Carter may refer to:

George Carter (artist)

George Carter (1737–1794) was an English artist who described himself as a "historical portrait painter". He visited Italy in the company of John Singleton Copley, who had a significant influence on his work, and spent some time in India.

Life

Carter was born in Colchester, where he was baptised on 10 April 1737, the son of George and Elizabeth Carter. He was educated at the free school in the town, before moving to London where he worked as a servant and then for a mercer. He went into partnership as a mercer himself in Covent Garden, but the business proved unsuccessful and Carter turned to painting.

In 1774 Carter visited France and Italy in the company of John Singleton Copley who had recently arrived in England from the United States. In a letter to his mother, Copley described Carter as "a very polite and sensible man, who has seen much of the world". However, relations between them soured during the journey, and Copley later compared him to "a sort of snail which crawled over a man in his sleep and left its slime, and no more".

George Carter (Queensland politician)

George Carter (1864–1932) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly.

Early life

George Carter was born in 1864 in Nelson, New Zealand, the son of Samuel Carter and Louisa née Lindsay. He attended Nelson State School.

On 17 September 1907 he married Alexandria Delia Kate Comerford in Brisbane.

Politics

Carter stood as a candidate of the Australian Labor Party in the electoral district of Brisbane North in the 1907 state election, but was unsuccessful.

At the 1915 election, Carter was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly in the electoral district of Port Curtis, defeating the sitting Ministerialist member John Kessel. He won it despite claims that the local newspaper, the Gladstone Observer misrepresented his campaign speech and refused to publish a letter from him providing correct information. Carter held the seat in the 1918 election but lost the seat in the 1920 election on 9 October to the Country Party candidate John Fletcher.
