A lost movie treasure! A black-and-white evangelical classic for all of us, especially when we reach the stage of down-and-out.... Viveca Lindfors is wonderful as Christine, whose father (Ludwig Donath) is a street preacher. Together they take in John Burrows (Sterling Hayden), a former pastor who has turned away from God and is now hiding his identity. He has ended up on skid row, and arrested for apparent public intoxication along with Gandy (Thomas Mitchell).
Burrows comes to realize that Christine is blind.... She falls in love with him, enjoying his discussions of the spirit and the soul but knowing little of his past. One day she is struck by a streetcar and knocked unconscious, causing Burrows to once again question his faith. Great ending!

In 1962, she shared the Silver Bear for Best Actress award with Rita Gam at the Berlin Film Festival, for their performances in Tad Danielewski's "No Exit".
In the last years of her life, she taught acting at the School of Visual Arts in New York. She had returned to her native Sweden to perform in the play "In Search of Strindberg". She died there at the age of 74, and was buried there. In New York, a service was held at the Actors Studio where Gene Frankel spoke to an audience about his respect and affection for her.

Lindfors was born in Uppsala, Sweden, the daughter of Karin Emilia Therese (née Dymling) and Axel Torsten Lindfors. She trained at the Royal Dramatic Theatre School, Stockholm. Soon after, she became a theater and film star in Sweden. She moved to the United States in 1946 after being signed by Warner Bros. and began working in Hollywood. She appeared in more than one hundred films including Night Unto Night, No Sad Songs for Me, Dark City, King of Kings, Creepshow, The Sure Thing, and Stargate.
She appeared with actors such as Ronald Reagan, Jeffrey Hunter, Charlton Heston, Lizabeth Scott and Errol Flynn. In 1963 she appeared in the film An Affair of the Skin as the mistress of Kevin McCarthy's character. She also appeared on television, including the 1959 episode "The Temple of the Swinging Doll" of the NBC espionage drama Five Fingers, starring David Hedison. Later, she had a recurring role on the ABC series Life Goes On, for which she won an Emmy Award. Lindfors appeared with Joseph Cotten and Ward Bond in the 1957 film The Halliday Brand. One of Americas best and most versatile actresses PIPER LAURIE has just released her first autobiography "Learning To Live Out Loud" at age 80.
Here is a personal and very in-depth interview with Piper Laurie in conversaton with Danish performer Lucas Alexander, about her exstraordinary 63-year-long movie and stage career.
From the pretty girl in many 1950´s Hollywood movies to wild horror queen, to great character actress, Piper Laurie is a 3-time Academy Award nominee, Emmy winner and Golden Globe winner.
Her most famous work was in "The Hustler", "Carrie", "Twin Peaks", "The Thorn Birds", "Appointment With Death", "Children Of A Lesser God", "Wrestling Earnest Hemmningway", "Return To Oz", "Mississippi Gambler" and "Tim" starring opposite Mel Gibson.
She played the mother of Judy Garland and Mae West in movies about their lives, and the on-screen mother of Patrick Swayze, Matt Damon, George Clooney, Sissy Spacek, Linda Hamilton and many others. In the interview Piper Laurie also talks about working with David Lynch in "Twin Peaks" where she played a male Japanese actor, Fumio Yamaguchi - playing a Japanese business man Mr. Tojomura, and about working with people such as Rock Hudson, Lauren Bacall, Sir Peter Ustinov, Carrie Fisher, Paul Newman, George C. Scott, Mel Gibson, Brian De Palma, Viveca Lindfors, James Woods, James Dean, Dario Argento, Usher, Elijah Wood and many others.
