Review Summary: The Fight for Life was documentary filmmaker Pare Lorentz' first "dramatic" film, utilizing the talents of several top New York stage actors. A tribute to the Chicago Maternity Center and its efforts to provide the best possible care for destitute mothers, the film is based on the book of the same name by Paul de Kruif. Myron McCormick plays the largest role as a dedicated intern, while others in the cast include such theatrical heavywrights as Will Geer, Dudley Digges and Dorothy Adams. The film's many vignettes range from the tragic (a mother dying in childbirth in the opening scene) to the exultant (another mother rescued from the brink of death in a disease-ridden tenement). The title refers to the mutually supportive relationship between Alexander and his loving wife Aimee (top-billed Doris Day); with this in mind, is it any surprise that the real Aimee Alexander served as the film's technical advisor. While the basic milestones of Alexander's career are adhered to, the film is a typical Hollywood blend of fact and fancy-plenty of fancy. While playing in the minors, Alexander is is hit on the heat by a batted ball, resulting in the dizziness and double vision that would ever after plague him. After toting up a record of 28 wins with the Philadelphia Phillies, Alex is traded to the Cubs, but World War 1 intervenes. On the battlefield, Alex suffers a recurrence of his double vision; and when he plays his first postwar game with the Cubs, he collapses on the field. Warned that his seizures will persist if he doesn't retire.

[From "Kovacs Corner" on YouTube.com] - For many years, one of the mainstays of the CBS Sunday night schedule was the game show "What's My Line" hosted by ABC Vice -President in charge of news, special events and public affairs, religious programs, and sports John Daly (or "John Charles Daly" as he was introduced every week by panalist Bennett Cerf). This week Ernie Kovacs, with wife Edie Adams, made the transition from one of the blindfolded guest panelists to a "sign in please" guest. Edie had recently won for the audition to play the role of "Daisy Mae" in Broadway play "Li'l Abner", which was based on the syndicated comic strip drawn by Al Capp. That performance ultimately won for her that year's Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. The Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Michael Kidd and orchestrated by Philip J. Lang, opened on November 15, 1956 at the St. James Theatre where it ran for 693 performances. The original Broadway cast also starred Peter Palmer in the title role, and included Howard St. John as "General Bullmoose", Stubby Kaye as "Marryin' Sam", Tina Louise as "Appassionata von Climax", Julie Newmar as "Stupefyin' Jones", Charlotte Rae as "Mammy", Carmen Alvarez as "Moonbeam McSwine", Ted Thurston as "Senator Jack S.
