Clad in simple white robes, they could be seen clambering to the top of the mountain as the sun came up. At the top of this rocky hill they stood in prayer, a moment many Muslims see as the climax of the Hajj.
The pilgrims will then spend the evening on the plains of Muzdalifah where they must pick up pebbles to be used the following day to hurl at three large walls representing Satan in Jamarat, between Mecca and Mina.

Mount Arafat reaches about 70 m in height and is also known as the Mount of Mercy (Jabal ar-Rahmah). Arafah rituals end at sunset and pilgrims then move to Muzdalifah for a shortened Maghrib Prayer and Isha prayer and for a short rest.
The level area surrounding the hill is called the Plain of Arafat. The term Mount Arafah is sometimes applied to this entire area. It is an important place in Islam because during the Hajj, pilgrims spend the afternoon there on the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah (ذو الحجة). Failure to be present in the plain of Arafat on the required day invalidates the pilgrimage.

Hajj
The Hajj (/hædʒ/;Arabic: حج Ḥaǧǧ "pilgrimage") is an annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, and a mandatory religious duty for Muslims that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by all adult Muslims who are physically and financially capable of undertaking the journey, and can support their family during their absence. It is one of the five pillars of Islam, alongside Shahadah, Salat, Zakat, and Sawm. The gathering during Hajj is considered the largest annual gathering of people in the world. The state of being physically and financially capable of performing the Hajj is called istita'ah, and a Muslim who fulfills this condition is called a mustati. The Hajj is a demonstration of the solidarity of the Muslim people, and their submission to God (Allah). The word Hajj means "to intend a journey", which connotes both the outward act of a journey and the inward act of intentions.
The pilgrimage occurs from the 8th to 12th (or in some cases 13th) of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar and the Islamic year is about eleven days shorter than the Gregorian year, the Gregorian date of Hajj changes from year to year. Ihram is the name given to the special spiritual state in which pilgrims wear two white sheets of seamless cloth and abstain from certain actions.

Millions of pilgrims gather at Mount Arafat for the annual Hajj, including groups from Syria, who call for an end to the Assad regime in their country.
Clad in simple white robes, they could be seen clambering to the top of the mountain as the sun came up. At the top of this rocky hill they stood in prayer, a moment many Muslims see as the climax of the Hajj.
The pilgrims will then spend the evening on the plains of Muzdalifah where they must pick up pebbles to be used the following day to hurl at three large walls representing Satan in Jamarat, between Mecca and Mina.
Islam's pilgrimage is one of the faith's so-called five pillars and is a duty for all Muslims once in their lives if they are capable of it.

STORYLINE
Wearing white robes to symbolise purity and equality under God, (m) millions of Muslims continued their annual pilgrimage on Sunday in the Saudi holy city of Mina for the stoning of Satan, the last and most dangerous rite of the annual Hajj.
To complete their rituals, pilgrims must throw 21 pebbles at each of three 25-metre (82-foot) pillars that represent Satan in a symbolic rejection of temptation.
Hundreds of people have been killed in stampedes in several previous pilgrimages to the sites when the pilgrims cast pebbles at the pillars.
On Sunday, the military was helping maintain security to avoid any accidents.
So far this year, no major incidents have been reported among the pilgrims.
The Mashair Railway, also known as the Mecca Metro, a two-track light railway connecting the three holy sites of Mina, Muzdalifah and Mount Arafat, was operating for the first time this year to ease congestion.
Some 2.5 (m) million people were expected to take part in the five-day event that started on Saturday.
This year's hajj takes place amid an unprecedented wave of anti-government protests in the Arab world which has toppled autocrats in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.
Uprisings have also shaken regimes in Yemen, Bahrain and Syria.
While Muslims see the hajj as a time to seek forgiveness for one's sins and for individual meditation on the faith, the unrest across the region remained at the forefront of the minds of many pilgrims.
Hajj is the oldest and most sacred ritual of Islam that every able-bodied Muslim who can financially afford the trip must perform once in a lifetime.
The pious journey brings together the many nations that make up the 1.3 (b) billion Muslims worldwide.
The day also marked the start of the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha, or "Feast of Sacrifice", when Muslims around the world slaughter sheep and cattle in remembrance of Abraham's near-sacrifice of his son.

Earlier this year, Saudi authorities banned people from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea - the countries hardest hit in the Ebola epidemic - from getting visas as a precaution against the virus.
The decision has affected a total of 7,400 pilgrims from the three countries.
The kingdom has not discovered a single case of Ebola so far and is taking all measures to ensure the safety and health of the pilgrims, according to the Saudi Health Ministry's department for prevention of infectious diseases.

Nearly two million Muslims have gathered in the vast Saudi plain of Mount Arafat for the most important ritual of the Hajj, an annual pilgrimage that re-enacts the actions of the Prophet Muhammad from more than 1,400 years ago.
Worshippers from more than 150 countries converged at the 70-metre hill at sunrise on Sunday, some 15km from Mecca, for "wukuf," a high point of the Hajj which all pilgrims must attend in the mid-afternoon.
Wearing two white, unstitched pieces of cloth for men known as the "ihram", and any loose-fitting clothing for women, the pilgrims climbed steps built into the hill where the Prophet Muhammad gave his final sermon.
In what looked like an unbroken sea of white the pilgrims marched to the top, reciting prayers and supplications.
Al Jazeera's Jamal ElShayyal, reporting from Mecca, said there was an extremely somber mood at the plain with many spending their time in prayer and introspection.
"Many of the people we have spoken to have been reflecting on the Prophet's final sermon and how poignant it is today. A message that was about the sanctity of life, forbidding oppression and calling for greater love and unity."
At sunset on Sunday, the pilgrims will head to Muzdalifah, about 9km away. There, they will spend the night under the open sky until just before sunrise and begin collecting pebbles for the next day's rites.
On Monday, as Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Adha Feast of the Sacrifice, pilgrims performing the Hajj will cast pebbles at a pillar on the Jamaraat Bridge in Mina, in a symbolic renunciation of the devil.
This stoning ritual goes on for two days before Hajj draws to a close.
