For a short time this past July, before Mick Fanning's shark encounter at the iconic pointbreak, all anyone at South Africa's Jeffreys Bay could talk about how was great the Top 34 were surfing.
Julian Wilson and Mick Fanning were standouts in the freesurf sessions and took their form to the podium, while Jordy Smith, Adriano de Souza, Kolohe Andino, Michel Bourez had individual moments of sheer brilliance too. Kolohe's filmer of choice, Noah Alani, rolled with Brother throughout Africa to film the world's elite strutting their stuff. Another dramatic day unfolded in front of a packed house at Jeffreys Bay for the culmination of the Corona Open J-Bay. Once again, the section known as Supertubes delivered perfect conditions, 4- to 6-foot groomed walls just waiting to be exploited by the world's best surfers. In the end, a pair of surfers who peaked at the right time, Filipe Toledo and Frederico Morais, faced off in a Final ultimately separated by a mere .27 points. J-Bay Was Definite Perfection Right Before the Tour Arrived in South Africa

I ventured down to Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa and scored this swell on July 21st, 2017. All of this was shot on one battery of the DJI Mavic. After shooting for half an hour I spent the rest of the day frothing in the water, scoring the best waves of my life.

In Part 2 of Oakley Dispatch South Africa, the boys leave the beachbreaks of Ballito to score perfect pointbreak waves at "Supertubes" at Jeffrey's Bay while competing in the 2012 Billabong Pro Jeffrey's Bay. Perfect waves aren't the only African experience the crew enjoys -- a visit to the Seaview Lion Park leads to some close encounters with some of the continents' most exotic animals.

On the 20th of Match a huge swell hit J-Bay and all the local surfers (plus the odd Capetonian and Durbanite) hit Supertubes. The CSALT students had their fair share of waves and had an awesome time in the water.
Living in Jeffrey's Bay, we are constantly in touch with the local surfing community and have huge influence over their lives. Being able to share our faith with others is an awesome opportunity and epitomizes what Christian Surfers is about.

Jeffreys Bay
Jeffreys Bay (Afrikaans: Jeffreysbaai, also known as J-bay) is a town located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The town is situated just off the N2 Highway, about 75 km southwest of Port Elizabeth.
History
Jeffreys Bay is named after the senior partner of the firm Jeffrey & Glendinnings that opened a store in 1849 on the location where the town is today. Jeffrey is believed to be the first person to have settled there.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Jeffreys Bay was known as a hippie hangout, where the now-burgeoning surf community originated. Jeffreys Bay has grown from a sleepy little fishing town over the past few years and is one of the fastest expanding urban areas in the country.
Demographics
Xhosa, Afrikaans and English are the three most spoken languages.
Jeffreys Bay is a constituent part of the Kouga Local Municipality of the Cacadu District in the Eastern Cape Province.
Sport
Surfing
Jeffreys Bay is one of the five most famous surfing destinations (no.2 on one "best in the world" surfing list) in the world and hosts the annual Billabong Pro ASP World Tour surfing event at Super Tubes during July. Spectators and professional surfers from all over the world flock to this event. In 2015, Mick Fanning was attacked by a shark two minutes into the J-Bay Open finals in Jeffreys Bay. Fanning was in the water with Julian Wilson during the final of the J-Bay Open 2015 when he was attacked by what is suspected to be a great white shark. Fanning punched the shark and tried to wedge his board between the shark and his body, and he emerged from the attack physically unharmed.

South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. Mick Fanning
Michael Eugene "Mick" Fanning, nicknamed "White Lightning" (born June 13, 1981), is an Australian professional surfer. Fanning won the 2007, 2009 and 2013 ASP World Tour. In 2015, Fanning survived an encounter with what is suspected to be a great white shark during the J-Bay Open finals in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.
Early years
Fanning was born on 13 June 1981 in Penrith, New South Wales, Australia, to Irish parents. He learned to surf at the age of 5 in coastal South Australia at a town called Mt Gambier, but did not focus on surfing until his family moved to Tweed Heads, New South Wales, when he was twelve. He grew up with fellow professional surfer, Joel Parkinson, in the Gold Coast/Northern Rivers region and both attended Palm Beach Currumbin State High School together. On the edge of the Queensland border, Fanning had access to epic surf north and south and he began to make a name for himself. In 1996 he established himself as one of the very best surfers to rule the Queensland points by placing in the top three at the Australian National Titles. But, tragedy struck in 1998 when his brother Sean died in a car accident along with fellow surfer Joel Green.

Filipe Toledo
Filipe Toledo (born April 16, 1995) is a Brazilian professional surfer who competes on the World Surfing League Men's World Tour since 2013. In 2014, after also competing on some events on the Qualifying Series (WQS), Toledo became the WQS champion. In 2015, Toledo had the best year of his professional career on the WSL World Championship Tour, managing to grab his first 3 WCT event wins, getting at least one perfect 10 in each final he competed. Toledo was also the surfer with most WCT event wins of the year. He went on to finish the 2015 season in 4th place.

In 1992 Tom Curren made his first trip to Jeffreys Bay South Africa. He appeared in the Rip Curl videos 'Search 2' and 'Searching for Tom Curren' and in the majority of the footage of the larger size wave sessions he was riding a 6'11" x 18 x 2-5/15", McKee Quattro, four-fin, swallowtail, gun. The fin set-up consisted of the rear fins being larger than the front fins. The fin cluster was fairly spread apart with the rear fins being close together and quite far back. The fins all had a medium flex and were glassed on. The bottom shape was a light forward Vee in the middle to a deep Vee with deep double concave in the tail. This helped give the board it's amazing speed and control. The fact that he was riding a four-fin or 'quad' was amazingly never mentioned. He also appeared in the video 'Ultmate Sessions', section shown here, where all of his J-Bay performance was on the McKee Quattro board. The commentator even incorrectly states he was on a 7'3" pintail when a close look at Tom running up the beach with the board, clearly shows him carrying a quad fin swallowtail. In another sound track the commentators even incorrectly claim the name of the supposed shaper.. It is a mystery why this surf-industry changing truth was never revealed to the public. Tom's next session riding a fish in Indonesia, did though, launch a revival of the fish style board.. Maybe one day, someone will tell us why, or who, decided to keep the technological nature of this momentous day at Jeffrey's in 1992 a secret. The result allowed shaper-designer and inventor Bruce Mckee to continue his 'Mission Quattro' which finally resulted in the 2001 launch of his website containing fin position formulas and relevant detail that has become the reference point for high performance quad fin enthusiasts. -

On the 20th of Match a huge swell hit J-Bay and all the local surfers (plus the odd Capetonian and Durbanite) hit Supertubes. The CSALT students had their fair share of waves and had an awesome time in the water. Living in Jeffrey's Bay, we are constantly in touch with the local surfing community and have huge influence over their lives. Being able to share our faith with others is an awesome opportunity and epitomizes what Christian Surfers is about.

Tom Curren J Bay Quad
In 1992 Tom Curren made his first trip to Jeffreys Bay South Africa. He appeared in the Rip Curl videos 'Search 2' and 'Searching for Tom Curren' and in the majority of the footage of the larger size wave sessions he was riding a 6'11" x 18 x 2-5/15", McKee Quattro, four-fin, swallowtail, gun. The fin set-up consisted of the rear fins being larger than the front fins. The fin cluster was fairly spread apart with the rear fins being close together and quite far back. The fins all had a medium flex and were glassed on. The bottom shape was a light forward Vee in the middle to a deep Vee with deep double concave in the tail. This helped give the board it's amazing speed and control. The fact that he was riding a four-fin or 'quad' was amazingly never mentioned. He also appeared in the v...

J-Bay Was Definite Perfection Right Before the Tour Arrived in South Africa
Song: Harlem River by Kevin Morby
I ventured down to Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa and scored this swell on July 21st, 2017. All of this was shot on one battery of the DJI Mavic. After shooting for half an hour I spent the rest of the day frothing in the water, scoring the best waves of my life.

Living in Jeffrey's Bay, we are constantly in touch with the local surfing community and have huge influence over their lives. Being able to share our faith with others is an awesome opportunity and epitomizes what Christian Surfers is about.

In 1992 Tom Curren made his first trip to Jeffreys Bay South Africa.
He appeared in the Rip Curl videos 'Search 2' and 'Searching for Tom Curren' and in the majority of the footage of the larger size wave sessions he was riding a 6'11" x 18 x 2-5/15", McKee Quattro, four-fin, swallowtail, gun.
The fin set-up consisted of the rear fins being larger than the front fins. The fin cluster was fairly spread apart with the rear fins being close together and quite far back. The fins all had a medium flex and were glassed on. The bottom shape was a light forward Vee in the middle to a deep Vee with deep double concave in the tail. This helped give the board it's amazing speed and control.
The fact that he was riding a four-fin or 'quad' was amazingly never mentioned.
He also appeared in the video 'Ultmate Sessions', section shown here, where all of his J-Bay performance was on the McKee Quattro board. The commentator even incorrectly states he was on a 7'3" pintail when a close look at Tom running up the beach with the board, clearly shows him carrying a quad fin swallowtail.
In another sound track the commentators even incorrectly claim the name of the supposed shaper..
It is a mystery why this surf-industry changing truth was never revealed to the public.
Tom's next session riding a fish in Indonesia, did though, launch a revival of the fish style board..
Maybe one day, someone will tell us why, or who, decided to keep the technological nature of this momentous day at Jeffrey's in 1992 a secret.
The result allowed shaper-designer and inventor Bruce Mckee to continue his 'Mission Quattro' which finally resulted in the 2001 launch of his website containing fin position formulas and relevant detail that has become the reference point for high performance quad fin enthusiasts.

Jeffreys Bay & Stormsriver Roadtrip 2017!
Had the opportunity to explore the beautiful coastline of the Eastern Cape. Very lucky to live in such a beautifully diverse country. We did a one week roadtrip from Port Shepstone all the way through to Stormsrivier, stopping off at places along the way. In this travel vlog, we are traveling to Hermanus, Western Cape, South Africa. We stopped in Jeffrey's Bay, a small coastal town in the Eastern Cape. Along the way we enjoyed absolutely stunning sunsets in the Garden Route or in N2. We passed small towns like George, Knyna, Plattenberg Bay, Tsitsikama, Swellendam, Riversdale, Botrivier and ended up in Hermanus. Garden route is so beautiful, it is worth a drive for any South African or international traveler. It was a beautiful trip, one to remember. So, we visited my mother, visited our ancestors and we are done with Eastern Cape. In December of 2016 we decided to take a vacation to South Africa as a family with six of our friends. Port Elizabeth's MBAT joined Freewalker Adventure Travel for a one-day break away from work during a corporate adventure trip to Jeffrey's Bay! The team started off with cliff jumping and zip lining, followed by a give-back clean up of JBay's lovely beach, lunch and holiday gift exchange game at Walskipper, and a day-end sand boarding excursion at Sardinia Bay. In Johannesburg we went on a safari. We saw our family and friends. We had an awesome time.

Mick Fanning narrowly escapes a shark attack while nearing the end of day 12 of competition in Jeffreys Bay Open, South Africa. All footage was recorded from the live feed of the WSL which includes commentary and interviews. Shark Footage starts at 2:25. The shark attacked Mick from behind while he was paddling out. It missed him and chomped his tether in half, came about, and came at him again from the front. Mick was separated from his board and started swimming to shore. A few moments later the Jet Skis and water safety personnel arrived and rescued him, unharmed. This video was taken during my Divemaster course in December 2013. The dive took place in Jeffreys Bay. There were a few open water students on the dive, and during this dive we swam into a small school of ragged tooth sharks. One can view the sharks from around 18 minutes into the dive.

A historic day with epic conditions at the Corona Open J-Bay. Regardless of what happens from here, Tuesday's action at the Corona Open J-Bay has already secured this year as an instant classic, with epic conditions being matched by an almost obscene amount of inspired surfing. Fans had plenty to cheer about with Jordy Smith leading the way in Round Three with a perfect 20-point heat. Mick Fanning narrowly escapes a shark attack while nearing the end of day 12 of competition in Jeffreys Bay Open, South Africa. All footage was recorded from the live feed of the WSL which includes commentary and interviews.
Shark Footage starts at 2:25.
The shark attacked Mick from behind while he was paddling out. It missed him and chomped his tether in half, came about, and came at him again from the front. Mick was separated from his board and started swimming to shore. A few moments later the Jet Skis and water safety personnel arrived and rescued him, unharmed.
This is the first time ever, in the history of professional surfing that someone was attacked during a competition. The competition was halted at the time of the attack and the top two leaders split the points and the cash, each taking second place and each adding an hour to their time for the start of the next competition.

Regardless of what happens from here, Tuesday's action at the Corona Open J-Bay has already secured this year as an instant classic, with epic conditions being matched by an almost obscene amount of inspired surfing. Fans had plenty to cheer about with Jordy Smith leading the way in Round Three with a perfect 20-point heat. His pair of 10-point rides weren't the only ones though, as John John Florence and Julian Wilson got involved in that story. And there were plenty more, as well.
