As Resnais' co-director, Chris Marker, stated, "We want to see their suffering, serenity, humor, even though we don't know anything about them." Their film shows what happens when art loses its connection to a culture. Consequently it was banned in France for 12 years. ---------------------------------------- Statues Also Die (French: Les Statues meurent aussi) is a 1953 French essay film directed by Chris Marker and Alain Resnais, about historical African art and the effects colonialism has had on how it is perceived. The film won the 1954 Prix Jean Vigo. Because of its criticism of colonialism, the second half of the film was censored in France until the 1960s. Synopsis The film exhibits a series of sculptures, masks and other traditional art from Sub-Saharan Africa. The images are frequently set to music and cut to the music's pace. The narrator focuses on the emotional qualities of the objects, and discusses the perception of African sculptures from a historical and contemporary European perspective. Only occasionally does the film provide the geographical origin, time period or other contextual information about the objects. The idea of a dead statue is explained as a statue which has lost its original significance and become reduced to a museum object, similarly to a dead person who can be found in history books. Interweaved with the objects are a few scenes of Africans performing traditional music and dances, as well as the death of a disemboweled gorilla. During the last third of the film, the modern commercialisation of African culture is problematised. The film argues that colonial presence has compelled African art to lose much of its idiosyncratic expression, in order to appeal to Western consumers. A mention is made of how African currencies previously had been replaced by European. In the final segment, the film comments on the position of black Africans themselves in contemporary Europe and North America. Footage is seen from a Harlem Globetrotters basketball show, of the boxer Sugar Ray Robinson, and a jazz drummer intercut with scenes from a confrontation between police and labour demonstrators. Stretching the genre of documentary, this experimental essay-film is a composition of thoughts, images and scenes, mainly from Japan and Guinea-Bissau, "two extreme poles of survival".[1] Some other scenes were filmed in Iceland, Paris, and San Francisco. A female narrator reads from letters supposedly sent to her by the (fictitious) cameraman Sandor Krasna. Sans Soleil is often labeled as a documentary, travelogue, or essay-film. Despite the film's modest use of fictional content, it should not be confused as a mock-documentary; the fictitious content works as a device to assist meaning in the film which, along with its occasionally nondescript movement among locations and lack of character-based narrative, is derived from the juxtaposition of narrative and image. Le film est construit autour du discours d'un cameraman fictif, Sandor Krasna, rédacteur de lettres lues tout au long du film par Florence Delay. Dans ses écrits, il va traiter successivement du temps, de la mémoire, de la fragilité humaine face aux séismes du Japon ou encore face à la famine, menace constante au Cap Vert ou en Guinée-Bissau. Le cinéaste voyage alors aux « deux pôles extrêmes de la survie » tel qu'il le dit lui-même. Il montrera non pas les difficultés pour ces sociétés à s'en sortir, mais plutôt leur façon de vivre et d'exister au-delà de ce qui peut leur coûter la vie. Chris Marker (born 29 July 1921) is a French writer, photographer, documentary film director, multimedia artist and film essayist. His best known films are La jetée (1962), A Grin Without a Cat (1977), Sans Soleil (1983) and AK (1985), an essay film on the Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. Marker is often associated with the Left Bank Cinema movement that occurred in the late 1950s and included such other filmmakers as Alain Resnais, Agnès Varda, Henri Colpi and Armand Gatti.

His friend and sometime collaborator Alain Resnais has called him "the prototype of the twenty-first-century man." Film theorist Roy Armes has said of him: "Marker is unclassifiable because he is unique...The French Cinema has its dramatists and its poets, its technicians, and its autobiographers, but only has one true essayist: Chris Marker."

Marker was born Christian François Bouche-Villeneuve on July 29, 1921. Always elusive about his past and known to refuse interviews and not allow photographs to be taken of him, his place of birth is highly disputed. Some sources and Marker himself claim that he was born in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. Other sources say he was born in Belleville, Paris, and others, in Neuilly-sur-Seine. The 1949 edition of Le Cœur Net specifies his birthday as July 22. Film critic David Thomson has stated: "Marker told me himself that Mongolia is correct. I have since concluded that Belleville is correct- but that does not spoil the spiritual truth of Ulan Bator." When asked about his secretive nature, Marker has said "My films are enough for them (the audience)."

Plot: Steve's buddy Chris can't understand why he's reluctant to play in their band. So, one night at Steve's house, he tells Chris a story about traveling to Baltimore to meet up with his brother Jeff so they can check out a cabin in Virginia left to them by their father. They hit the road in a rv, along with Colleen, Jeff's wife, and her friend Susan. Along the way, Steve finds out Colleen can see ghosts and starts playing footsy with her after she reads a Edgar Allen Poe story. When they reach the cabin, they are approached by the ghosts of Confederate soldiers who tell them stories about their dead captain.

Stretching the genre of documentary, this experimental essay-film is a composition of thoughts, images and scenes, mainly from Japan and Guinea-Bissau, "two extreme poles of survival".[1] Some other scenes were filmed in Iceland, Paris, and San Francisco. A female narrator reads from letters supposedly sent to her by the (fictitious) cameraman Sandor Krasna. Sans Soleil is often labeled as a documentary, travelogue, or essay-film. Despite the film's modest use of fictional content, it should not be confused as a mock-documentary; the fictitious content works as a device to assist meaning in the film which, along with its occasionally nondescript movement among locations and lack of character-based narrative, is derived from the juxtaposition of narrative and image. Le film est construit autour du discours d'un cameraman fictif, Sandor Krasna, rédacteur de lettres lues tout au long du film par Florence Delay. Dans ses écrits, il va traiter successivement du temps, de la mémoire, de la fragilité humaine face aux séismes du Japon ou encore face à la famine, menace constante au Cap Vert ou en Guinée-Bissau. Le cinéaste voyage alors aux « deux pôles extrêmes de la survie » tel qu'il le dit lui-même. December Seeds Chris Marker (2009) subtitulado en español Δεκεμβριανοι Σποροι (Dekemvriana Spora), December Seeds, (Semillas de Diciembre) Este cortometraje documental parte con la premisa de encontrarnos ante una de la ultimas obras del maestro de cine documental, de la experimentación y de lo subterráneo, es decir Chris Marker, todas aquellas personas que seguimos la obra de este francés, que no tiene editada en DVD ni la mitad de sus películas, se nos hace la boca agua al saber que circula por la red su ultimo documental, al igual que algunas de sus ultimas experiencias videograficas han saltado directamente a la red en la ultima década,como este Pictures at an Exhibition, este señor que cuenta ya con 91 años se comporta de una forma mas parecida a un veinteañero amante de las nuevas tecnologías y precavido de no dejar demasiadas pistas de su paso por la red que a uno de los directores mas importantes y enigmáticos del siglo XX. No obstante, Marker siempre ha pertenecido mas al underground que al star system cinematográfico. Y esta obra circula con la interesante duda, ¿es una obra de Chris Marker o es la obra Panagiotis Karagiorga?, un realizador amigo del asesinado Alexis Grigoropoulos, a quien va dedicada esta obra en homenaje, a el y a todas las semillas rebeldes de la Grecia incendiaria y revolucionaria de los últimos años, desde luego también podría ser un homenaje a Marker, pues sea o no de el, esta plagada de referencias hacia el cine del francés, una manifiesto político experimental, un cóctel molotov audiovisual diferente a lo que nos tiene acostumbradas el cine militante. Sin duda la obra es de por si interesante, pero además se le suma la polémica de ser o no ser una obra de Marker, porque si no lo fuese, desde luego, el merito de usar su nombre como parte de la bomba arrojadiza para llamar la atención y que llegue a mas publico consigue sus propósitos, y hasta webs de información cinematográfica como FilmAffinity han picado y la referencia como su ultima película. Solo queda que la vean y saquen sus propias conclusiones, porque la importancia de esta obra radica en su mensaje y sus formas, tanto de realización como de difusión. Y sea de quien sea, solo se puede añadir ¡VIVA CHRIS MARKER! ¡VIVAN LAS SEMILLAS DE LA RESISTENCIA Y LA REVOLUCION GRIEGA! *1Exhibida en 2011 en el Festival de Cinema Anarquista de Barcelona, esta pieza se sitúa en el marco de los disturbios de Diciembre 2008, la llamada Insurrección del Diciembre griego. Mediante el relato en primera persona de un joven en busca de las semillas de las cuales ha de germinar una revolución todavía por llegar, y usando figuras literarias y tropos la pieza documental trata de evocar en el/la espectador/a las ilusiones y la rabia desbordada que inundaron los corazones de las decenas de miles de personas que salieron a las calles a vengarse por la muerte de Alexis convirtiendo tanto los distritos comerciales más exclusivos como los suburbios más lúgubres en poco más que gas lacrimógeno y ceniza. La película (elaborada con imágenes de archivo obtenidas en la red o tomadas directamente de informativos de televisión) se desenvuelve en un estilo que se define en el término medio entre el documental de autor/a (acercándose a obras como Level 5), y el cine disidente, dada su pronta realización y los pocos recursos empleados en ésta, así como su distribución, la cual tuvo y tiene lugar principalmente a través de canales de carácter militante y anti-autoritario. December Seeds Chris Marker (2009) subtitulado en español Δεκεμβριανοι Σποροι (Dekemvriana Spora), December Seeds, (Semillas de Diciembre) Este cortometraje documental parte con la premisa de encontrarnos ante una de la ultimas obras del maestro de cine documental, de la experimentación y de lo subterráneo, es decir Chris Marker, todas aquellas personas que seguimos la obra de este francés, que no tiene editada en DVD ni la mitad de sus películas, se nos hace la boca agua al saber que circula por la red su ultimo documental, al igual que algunas de sus ultimas experiencias videograficas han saltado directamente a la red en la ultima década,como este Pictures at an Exhibition, este señor que cuenta ya con 91 años se comporta de una forma mas parecida a un veinteañero amante de las nuevas tecnologías y precavido de no dejar demasiadas pistas de su paso por la red que a uno de los directores mas importantes y enigmáticos del siglo XX. No obstante, Marker siempre ha pertenecido mas al underground que al star system cinematográfico. Y esta obra circula con la interesante duda, ¿es una obra de Chris Marker o es la obra Panagiotis Karagiorga?, un realizador amigo del asesinado Alexis Grigoropoulos, a quien va dedicada esta obra en homenaje, a el y a todas las semillas rebeldes de la Grecia incendiaria y revolucionaria de los últimos años, desde luego también podría ser un homenaje a Marker, pues sea o no de el, esta plagada de referencias hacia el cine del francés, una manifiesto político experimental, un cóctel molotov audiovisual diferente a lo que nos tiene acostumbradas el cine militante. Sin duda la obra es de por si interesante, pero además se le suma la polémica de ser o no ser una obra de Marker, porque si no lo fuese, desde luego, el merito de usar su nombre como parte de la bomba arrojadiza para llamar la atención y que llegue a mas publico consigue sus propósitos, y hasta webs de información cinematográfica como FilmAffinity han picado y la referencia como su ultima película. Solo queda que la vean y saquen sus propias conclusiones, porque la importancia de esta obra radica en su mensaje y sus formas, tanto de realización como de difusión. Y sea de quien sea, solo se puede añadir ¡VIVA CHRIS MARKER! ¡VIVAN LAS SEMILLAS DE LA RESISTENCIA Y LA REVOLUCION GRIEGA! *1Exhibida en 2011 en el Festival de Cinema Anarquista de Barcelona, esta pieza se sitúa en el marco de los disturbios de Diciembre 2008, la llamada Insurrección del Diciembre griego. Mediante el relato en primera persona de un joven en busca de las semillas de las cuales ha de germinar una revolución todavía por llegar, y usando figuras literarias y tropos la pieza documental trata de evocar en el/la espectador/a las ilusiones y la rabia desbordada que inundaron los corazones de las decenas de miles de personas que salieron a las calles a vengarse por la muerte de Alexis convirtiendo tanto los distritos comerciales más exclusivos como los suburbios más lúgubres en poco más que gas lacrimógeno y ceniza. La película (elaborada con imágenes de archivo obtenidas en la red o tomadas directamente de informativos de televisión) se desenvuelve en un estilo que se define en el término medio entre el documental de autor/a (acercándose a obras como Level 5), y el cine disidente, dada su pronta realización y los pocos recursos empleados en ésta, así como su distribución, la cual tuvo y tiene lugar principalmente a través de canales de carácter militante y anti-autoritario. As Resnais' co-director, Chris Marker, stated, "We want to see their suffering, serenity, humor, even though we don't know anything about them." Their film shows what happens when art loses its connection to a culture. Consequently it was banned in France for 12 years. ---------------------------------------- Statues Also Die (French: Les Statues meurent aussi) is a 1953 French essay film directed by Chris Marker and Alain Resnais, about historical African art and the effects colonialism has had on how it is perceived. The film won the 1954 Prix Jean Vigo. Because of its criticism of colonialism, the second half of the film was censored in France until the 1960s. Synopsis The film exhibits a series of sculptures, masks and other traditional art from Sub-Saharan Africa. The images are frequently set to music and cut to the music's pace. The narrator focuses on the emotional qualities of the objects, and discusses the perception of African sculptures from a historical and contemporary European perspective. Only occasionally does the film provide the geographical origin, time period or other contextual information about the objects. The idea of a dead statue is explained as a statue which has lost its original significance and become reduced to a museum object, similarly to a dead person who can be found in history books. Interweaved with the objects are a few scenes of Africans performing traditional music and dances, as well as the death of a disemboweled gorilla. During the last third of the film, the modern commercialisation of African culture is problematised. The film argues that colonial presence has compelled African art to lose much of its idiosyncratic expression, in order to appeal to Western consumers. A mention is made of how African currencies previously had been replaced by European. In the final segment, the film comments on the position of black Africans themselves in contemporary Europe and North America. Footage is seen from a Harlem Globetrotters basketball show, of the boxer Sugar Ray Robinson, and a jazz drummer intercut with scenes from a confrontation between police and labour demonstrators. Stretching the genre of documentary, this experimental essay-film is a composition of thoughts, images and scenes, mainly from Japan and Guinea-Bissau, "two extreme poles of survival".[1] Some other scenes were filmed in Iceland, Paris, and San Francisco. A female narrator reads from letters supposedly sent to her by the (fictitious) cameraman Sandor Krasna. Sans Soleil is often labeled as a documentary, travelogue, or essay-film. Despite the film's modest use of fictional content, it should not be confused as a mock-documentary; the fictitious content works as a device to assist meaning in the film which, along with its occasionally nondescript movement among locations and lack of character-based narrative, is derived from the juxtaposition of narrative and image. Le film est construit autour du discours d'un cameraman fictif, Sandor Krasna, rédacteur de lettres lues tout au long du film par Florence Delay. Dans ses écrits, il va traiter successivement du temps, de la mémoire, de la fragilité humaine face aux séismes du Japon ou encore face à la famine, menace constante au Cap Vert ou en Guinée-Bissau. Le cinéaste voyage alors aux « deux pôles extrêmes de la survie » tel qu'il le dit lui-même. Il montrera non pas les difficultés pour ces sociétés à s'en sortir, mais plutôt leur façon de vivre et d'exister au-delà de ce qui peut leur coûter la vie. Car comme il l'annonce : « Moi, ce que je veux vous montrer, ce sont les fêtes de quartier ».

Objetiva y llanamente, este film es el reportaje cinematográfico de un francés que tiene el privilegio de visitar Siberia con total libertad, siguiendo un itinerario de varios miles de kilómetros. A pesar de que ya se han visto, desde hace tres años, algunos reportajes filmados por viajeros franceses en Rusia, Lettre de Sibérie tampoco se parece a ninguno de ellos. Para intentar captar de forma más precisa su naturaleza, propondré esta definición aproximada: Lettre de Sibérie es un ensayo en forma de reportaje cinematográfico sobre la realidad siberiana del pasado y del presente. O aún mejor, adaptando la fórmula que Vigo aplicaba a À propos de Nice [A propósito de Niza], "un punto de vista documentado", diré que es un ensayo documentado por el film. December Seeds Chris Marker (2009) subtitulado en español Δεκεμβριανοι Σποροι (Dekemvriana Spora), December Seeds, (Semillas de Diciembre) Este cortometraje documental parte con la premisa de encontrarnos ante una de la ultimas obras del maestro de cine documental, de la experimentación y de lo subterráneo, es decir Chris Marker, todas aquellas personas que seguimos la obra de este francés, que no tiene editada en DVD ni la mitad de sus películas, se nos hace la boca agua al saber que circula por la red su ultimo documental, al igual que algunas de sus ultimas experiencias videograficas han saltado directamente a la red en la ultima década,como este Pictures at an Exhibition, este señor que cuenta ya con 91 años se comporta de una forma mas parecida a un veinteañero amante de las nuevas tecnologías y precavido de no dejar demasiadas pistas de su paso por la red que a uno de los directores mas importantes y enigmáticos del siglo XX. No obstante, Marker siempre ha pertenecido mas al underground que al star system cinematográfico. Y esta obra circula con la interesante duda, ¿es una obra de Chris Marker o es la obra Panagiotis Karagiorga?, un realizador amigo del asesinado Alexis Grigoropoulos, a quien va dedicada esta obra en homenaje, a el y a todas las semillas rebeldes de la Grecia incendiaria y revolucionaria de los últimos años, desde luego también podría ser un homenaje a Marker, pues sea o no de el, esta plagada de referencias hacia el cine del francés, una manifiesto político experimental, un cóctel molotov audiovisual diferente a lo que nos tiene acostumbradas el cine militante. Sin duda la obra es de por si interesante, pero además se le suma la polémica de ser o no ser una obra de Marker, porque si no lo fuese, desde luego, el merito de usar su nombre como parte de la bomba arrojadiza para llamar la atención y que llegue a mas publico consigue sus propósitos, y hasta webs de información cinematográfica como FilmAffinity han picado y la referencia como su ultima película. Solo queda que la vean y saquen sus propias conclusiones, porque la importancia de esta obra radica en su mensaje y sus formas, tanto de realización como de difusión. Y sea de quien sea, solo se puede añadir ¡VIVA CHRIS MARKER! ¡VIVAN LAS SEMILLAS DE LA RESISTENCIA Y LA REVOLUCION GRIEGA! *1Exhibida en 2011 en el Festival de Cinema Anarquista de Barcelona, esta pieza se sitúa en el marco de los disturbios de Diciembre 2008, la llamada Insurrección del Diciembre griego. Mediante el relato en primera persona de un joven en busca de las semillas de las cuales ha de germinar una revolución todavía por llegar, y usando figuras literarias y tropos la pieza documental trata de evocar en el/la espectador/a las ilusiones y la rabia desbordada que inundaron los corazones de las decenas de miles de personas que salieron a las calles a vengarse por la muerte de Alexis convirtiendo tanto los distritos comerciales más exclusivos como los suburbios más lúgubres en poco más que gas lacrimógeno y ceniza. La película (elaborada con imágenes de archivo obtenidas en la red o tomadas directamente de informativos de televisión) se desenvuelve en un estilo que se define en el término medio entre el documental de autor/a (acercándose a obras como Level 5), y el cine disidente, dada su pronta realización y los pocos recursos empleados en ésta, así como su distribución, la cual tuvo y tiene lugar principalmente a través de canales de carácter militante y anti-autoritario. En este docu incendiario, el asesinato policial de Alexandros Grigoropoulos sirve de piedra angular cilíndrica en torno a la cual se presentan una serie de diálogos que la fantasmagórica narración establece con ciertas figuras retóricas como la Libertad, en busca de un film no realizado del propio Marker que simboliza esas semillas diseminándose y devolviendo la esperanza a esta naturaleza muerta, como el presagio de lo inevitable, es decir, una nueva forma de concebir la revolución basada en la destrucción de las relaciones de dominio y la comprensión crítica y posterior transformación de nuestra realidad circundante recuperando la esperanza en un cambio con la construcción paulatina de dicho cambio en nuestro presente y no en futuros hipotéticos y autocomplacientes que nunca llegan, lejos de discursos y prácticas de corte mesíaco contextualizadas en un futuro onanista que no existirá mientras no empecemos a crearlo.
