The Amazon is one of the richest areas of the world in animal and plant diversity. There can be more plant species in one hectare of Amazon rainforest than there are in all of Europe. The diversity and contrast of life in the Amazon is startling. The Amazon water lily is the biggest flower in the world with a diameter of two metres. The Caranguejeira spider is bigger than a baseball and one species of monkey weighing 130 grams is about the size of a toothbrush.
The Amazon is also home to 57 endangered species including the jaguar. The jaguar population was all but wiped out by hunting for the fur trade before it was designated a protected species. Even now, virtually nothing is known about the jaguars' lifestyle, but some indigenous cultures of the Amazon revere the jaguar above all forest creatures.
Yet the range of plant and animal species in the Amazon remains largely unknown. Scientists estimate that only 40 percent of all insect species have so far been identified. Over 300,000 species of plants have been identified, but an estimated 20,000 remain undiscovered. In the 1990s alone, seven species of monkeys, two species of birds and dozens of species of frogs and fish have been discovered.

The total area of the Amazon rainforest (over six million km2 or 2.3 million square miles) is bigger than Western Europe and covers an area equivalent to two thirds of the US.
The forest stretches over nine countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guyana, Guyana, Peru, Surinam and Venezuela. The largest part is contained within Brazil.
The Amazon basin is the largest reservoir of fresh water on the planet and about one fifth of all running water on the planet flows through the Amazon.
The Amazon river is 6,868 km or 4000 miles long. The same distance that separates New York from Berlin. It is almost two times the length of the Mississippi river (3744 km/2340 miles) and five times longer than the river Rhine (1312km/820 miles).
During the rainy season from November to June, the main rivers in the Amazon flood vast areas of the forest. The flooded area can spread out up to 200 km from the riverbanks engulfing an area the size of England. In some rivers, the difference in the water level between wet and dry seasons is equal to the height of an eight-story building.
Over 200 species of trees can be found in one hectare of Amazon rainforest. One tree has been shown to have 72 different species of ants living in it.
There are about 30 times more fish species in the Amazon than in all European rivers.
The Amazon river contains over 3000 rare aquatic species including two types of river dolphins, the giant otter, turtles and alligators.
During the rainy season, the pink river dolphins move out of the main river and into the flooded forest where they can be seen swimming and hunting among the trees.
Jaguars are the biggest cat in the western hemisphere and are known to be far-ranging. Movements of 500 miles have been recorded. Jaguars rarely attack humans, in fact, humans have a longer history hunting jaguars and the demand for their fur has led to a dramatic reduction in population.
The sloth's vegetarian diet makes them very successful species in the forest and in many areas they are the most abundant larger mammal.

This 6x52 toro stick features a dark brown mottled firmly packed wrapper with medium veins, visible seams, sloppy double cap, oily butter soft feel and pungent cocoa and leather aroma. First light reveals a good draw with smooth mild-medium smoke output showing a unique combo of a zingy earth, nuttiness, touch of sweetness and fleeting cocoa on the draw while the finish holds on to the nuttiness and adds a pepper zing. The first third burns well enough producing good medium bodied smoke showing flavors of a slightly sweet earth, bit of a pepper zing especially on the finish and a fleeting coffee note on the draw. The 1/2 way point comes at 30 minutes with flavor transitions to a thicker syrupy sweet earth and coffee core that sticks through the fuller finish with a hot pepper on the retrohale. This story has been circulating the internet since 2012, claiming the mega beast was discovered in 1892 living in a Brazilian river and was over 529 years old, meaning the monster lived during the same era as William Shakespeare and the Renaissance.
How old can a tortoise really live?
Tortoises generally have the longest life span of any animal and some have lived over 150 years.
The oldest living tortoise on record who was also the oldest individual animal ever recorded was a tortoise named Tui Malila.
This animal was a gift from the legendary Captain Cook to a royal Tongan family. The creature was born in 1777 and lived a long healthy life until it died of natural causes on May 19, 1965 at the ripe old age of 188 years.
The largest tortoises on record are considered to be the Aldabra Giant Tortoises from the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles where they have been known to grow almost 4 feet long and can weigh as much as 2 massive rottweilers 260 pounds.
Now it is a fact that some very strange and scary creatures have been known to lurk deep within the Amazon Basin.
Like the black caiman which is essentially an alligator on steroids that can grow up to 20 feet long
That's bigger than a corvette
But in the case of a 529 year old giant 800 pound tortoise, it is just another internet hoax.

The Amazon basin is the part of South America drained by the Amazon River and its tributaries. The Amazon drainage basin covers an area of about 7,050,000 km2 (2,720,000 sq mi), or roughly 40 percent of the South American continent. The creature was born in 1777 and lived a long healthy life until it died of natural causes on May 19, 1965 at the ripe old age of 188 years. The largest tortoises on record are considered to be the Aldabra Giant Tortoises from the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles where they have been known to grow almost 4 feet long and can weigh as much as 2 massive rottweilers 260 pounds. Yet the range of plant and animal species in the Amazon remains largely unknown. Scientists estimate that only 40 percent of all insect species have so far been identified. Over 300,000 species of plants have been identified, but an estimated 20,000 remain undiscovered. In the 1990s alone, seven species of monkeys, two species of birds and dozens of species of frogs and fish have been discovered.

Over 200 species of trees can be found in one hectare of Amazon rainforest. One tree has been shown to have 72 different species of ants living in it.
There are about 30 times more fish species in the Amazon than in all European rivers.
The Amazon river contains over 3000 rare aquatic species including two types of river dolphins, the giant otter, turtles and alligators.
During the rainy season, the pink river dolphins move out of the main river and into the flooded forest where they can be seen swimming and hunting among the trees.
Jaguars are the biggest cat in the western hemisphere and are known to be far-ranging. Movements of 500 miles have been recorded. Jaguars rarely attack humans, in fact, humans have a longer history hunting jaguars and the demand for their fur has led to a dramatic reduction in population.

This 6x52 toro stick features a dark brown mottled firmly packed wrapper with medium veins, visible seams, sloppy double cap, oily butter soft feel and pungent cocoa and leather aroma. First light reveals a good draw with smooth mild-medium smoke output showing a unique combo of a zingy earth, nuttiness, touch of sweetness and fleeting cocoa on the draw while the finish holds on to the nuttiness and adds a pepper zing. The first third burns well enough producing good medium bodied smoke showing flavors of a slightly sweet earth, bit of a pepper zing especially on the finish and a fleeting coffee note on the draw. The 1/2 way point comes at 30 minutes with flavor transitions to a thicker syrupy sweet earth and coffee core that sticks through the fuller finish with a hot pepper on the retrohale. Ending at 55 minutes right at the smokeable tobacco twine band, the last third ends at an hour just going to a washed out airy nuttiness. Thank you to Ben Miller for providing this sample for review!

This story has been circulating the internet since 2012, claiming the mega beast was discovered in 1892 living in a Brazilian river and was over 529 years old, meaning the monster lived during the same era as William Shakespeare and the Renaissance.
How old can a tortoise really live?
Tortoises generally have the longest life span of any animal and some have lived over 150 years.
The oldest living tortoise on record who was also the oldest individual animal ever recorded was a tortoise named Tui Malila.
This animal was a gift from the legendary Captain Cook to a royal Tongan family. The creature was born in 1777 and lived a long healthy life until it died of natural causes on May 19, 1965 at the ripe old age of 188 years.
The largest tortoises on record are considered to be the Aldabra Giant Tortoises from the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles where they have been known to grow almost 4 feet long and can weigh as much as 2 massive rottweilers 260 pounds.
Now it is a fact that some very strange and scary creatures have been known to lurk deep within the Amazon Basin.
Like the black caiman which is essentially an alligator on steroids that can grow up to 20 feet long
That's bigger than a corvette
But in the case of a 529 year old giant 800 pound tortoise, it is just another internet hoax.
The image in question is in fact a still from the movie Gamera the Brave, a film produced in Japan in 2006.

The Amazon River of South America is the world's largest river and the lifeblood of the world's largest ecosystem, spanning two-fifths of an entire continent. It is home to a huge variety of animals and plants that dwell in its lush, evergreen environment. It is the mightiest river in the world by volume, with six times greater total river flow than the next six largest rivers combined, and the most extensive drainage basin in the world. Because of its vast dimensions it is sometimes called The River Sea. Running about 4,000 miles (6,400 kilometers), most sources regard the Amazon as the second longest river in length, compared to Africa's Nile River, though this is a matter of some dispute.
Originally explored in the sixteenth century by Europeans who used the Amazon to traverse the formidable environment, the vast waterway fed by numerous tributaries eventually gave rise to commerce in later years. Utilizing boats and steamers, Europeans, slaves, and indigenous peoples increasingly carried out of the rain forest a rich array of highly sought-after products.
In recent years, a highway has made further inroads into the region, while Brazil has sought to keep the Amazon basin free from foreign exploitation. However today, the Amazon is ecologically endangered from reckless deforestation and a lack of public understanding of the importance of this remote region.

The area covered by the Amazon River and its tributaries more than triples between the dry season and wet season over the course of a year. In an average dry season, 110,000 square kilometers of land are water-covered, while in the wet season the flooded area of the Amazon basin rises to 350,000 square kilometers. At its widest point the Amazon River can be 6.8 miles (11 kilometers) wide during the dry season, but during the rainy season when the Amazon River floods the surrounding plains it can be up to 24.8 miles (40 kilometers) wide.
The quantity of freshwater released by the Amazon into the Atlantic Ocean is enormous: up to 300,000 square meters per second in the rainy season. The Amazon is responsible for one-fifth of the total volume of freshwater entering the oceans worldwide. Offshore of the mouth of the Amazon, potable water can be drawn from the ocean while still out of sight of the coastline, and the salinity of the ocean is notably lower a hundred miles out to sea.
The Amazon estuary is over 202 miles (325 kilometers) wide. The main river (which is between approximately one and six miles wide) is navigable for large ocean steamers to Manaus, Brazil, more than 900 miles (1,500 kilometers) upriver from the mouth. Smaller ocean vessels of 3,000 tons can reach as far as Iquitos, Peru, 2,250 miles (3,600 kilometers) from the sea. Smaller riverboats can reach 486 miles (780 kilometers) higher as far as Achual Point. Beyond that, small boats frequently ascend to the Pongo de Manseriche, just above Achual Point.
The Amazon drains an area of some 2,722,000 square miles, or nearly 40 percent of South America. It gathers its waters from 5 degrees north latitude to 20 degrees south latitude. Its most remote sources are found on the inter-Andean plateau, just a short distance from the Pacific Ocean; and, after coursing through the interior of Peru and across Brazil, it enters the Atlantic Ocean at the equator. The Amazon has changed its drainage several times, from westward in the early Cenozoic period to its present eastward locomotion following the uplift of the Andes Mountains.

The Upper Amazon comprises a series of major river systems in Peru that flow north and south into the Marañón River. Among others, these include the following rivers: Morona, Pastaza, Nucuray, Urituyacu, Chambira, Tigre, Nanay, Napo, Huallaga, and Ucayali. Originating in the snow-crested Andes Mountains high above Lake Lauricocha in central Peru, the headstream of the Marañón River rises in the glaciers in what is known as the Nevado de Yarupa. Rushing through waterfalls and gorges in an area of the high jungle called the Pongos, the Marañón River flows about 1,000 miles from west-central to northeast Peru before it combines with the Ucayali River, just below the provincial town of Nauta, to form the mighty Amazon River. Bolivia is a diamond in the rough. It’s relatively poor and undeveloped, but its extremely authentic, colorful and cultural. However, large swaths of it are protected by hundreds of parks, including 131 federal parks, 443 state parks, and 14 municipal parks, most of which are open to visitation.
Campos Gerais - With a vast vegetation of grasses and areas of transition between the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest, this region offers beautiful scenery of cliffs and canyons, as Jaguaricatú Valley, beyond the fifth and the eighth most extensive canyons in the world, which are respectively Guartelá and Jaguariaíva . We've done a lot of travel in Peru; however, we've yet to visit the Amazon basin jungle area up in the north. With an opportunity to take a river cruise in the Amazon we flew from Lima to Iquitos. Visiting Iquitos, the largest city in the region, was a place we stayed for two nights. After spending some time in Lima, we flew into Iquitos for the final leg of our Peruvian adventure. The landscape changed from arid deserts to mountains and finally to jungle as our flight crossed the country, and once we arrived, the first thing we did was hop into a tuk-tuk to take us into the city.
So we have made it to Iquitos. We had some lunch, we had a nap. It is now time to explore but first up we have to show you our hotel. It is called Hotel Epoca and it is super cool. It is a colonial building with a cute terrace and you just have to see it. So let's go. I know.
Iquitos is a really fascinating city. It is the largest city in the world that cannot be reached by road, which means that if you want to visit, you either have to take a plane or a boat to get there.
For many, Iquitos is just a quick stopover en route to an Amazon river cruise or a jungle stay, however, we were pretty excited to get to explore this colonial city.
So favorite part of the city so far is walking along the riverfront. We've got the Rio Amazonas just over there. And it is a really scenic walk. It is, it reminds us so much of Luang Prabang in Laos. Yes. Like it is bringing us right back. So similar.
Rrrrrr. We can hear those engines purring. Yes, something that also reminds us so much of Southeast Asia is all of the tuk-tuk. It is a city of tuk-tuk. You see motorcycles and rickshaw drivers everywhere.
It is an Iron House and that was built by Gustav Eiffel and brought piece by piece all the way from France in 1890. Wow! Or so rumor has it! There is little evidence tying Eiffel to this building, but the mystery keeps people visiting .
We spent the rest of the afternoon just wandering around Iquitos on foot. We didn’t have a map and we didn't have a guide, but we somehow managed to hit a lot of the main landmarks and then some.
Well I would say it has been a pretty fun first half day of exploration. We're really enjoying the town so far. Yes. This is a place I have wanted to visit for such a long time because my Grandma is actually from this area. Not from the city but from like a tiny little colony in the middle of the jungle that no longer even exists. I know. So it is pretty cool here. I feel like we have a much greater appreciation of where she is from and the kinds of food she has been eating because if you stay tune to our channel we're going to be filming a lot of food vlogs of all the regional cuisine from the Amazon.
Okay, so we made it to Belen which is the little village on water stilts. We ended up in the more residential area of Belen, however, there is a more touristy area where you can hire a peke-peke boat to take you out on the water. While we didn’t get to experience this, it could be a cool way to see the village from a different vantage point.
So Audrey, what are you seeing so far? Mostly fresh produce. Fruits and vegetables. Lots of colorful fruit. And I can smell cilantro in the air. So we just went through a really busy market. Now we're heading back into a different section of the water stilt village.
So that is a wrap from Iquitos. Tomorrow we are off to stay in a tree house lodge in the middle of the jungle. And from there we're going to be cruising down the Amazon. Yeah. Can't wait for that. So the adventures continue and we'll have many more videos to come. Ciao. Ciao.

We've done a lot of travel in Peru; however, we've yet to visit the Amazon basin jungle area up in the north. With an opportunity to take a river cruise in the Amazon we flew from Lima to Iquitos. Visiting Iquitos, the largest city in the region, was a place we stayed for two nights. Other popular routes include Cordillera Blanca - Huaraz, Colca Canyon - Arequipa, Ausangate Trek, Salkantay trek (also spelt Salkcantay), Choquequirao trek and Inka Jungle trek to Machu Picchu - an adrenaline trip to Machu Picchu.
Trek prices can vary considerably between companies, as can their respective porters' working conditions (no pack animals are allowed, hence equipment is carried by human porters). Although there is a minimum porter wage (PEN42/day, about USD15) and maximum load porters can carry (25kg/55 lb), not all companies keep to their claims!
Peru offers a big variety of adrenaline sport such as rafting, kayaking, biking, zip line, horseback riding, surfing, ATV, motocross, paragliding, canopy, canoing, sandboarding, etc.

The rich, consisting mostly of a Hispanic (or "Criollo") elite, live in the cities. Nevertheless, most Peruvians are great nationalists and love their country with pride (largely stemming from Peru's history as the hub of both the Inca empire and Spain's South American empire). Also, many Peruvians separate the state of Peru and its government in their minds. Many of them distrust their government and police, and people are used to fighting corruption and embezzlement scandals, as in many countries.
The Peruvian economy is healthy and quite strong, however inequality is still common. It is indebted and dependent on industrial nations, especially China, Russia and United States. The US foreign policy decisions in recent years has contributed to a widely held negative view about the US government in Peru, but not against individual citizens.
The word gringo is used commonly but is not generally intended as offensive. The original meaning encompassed all white people who do not speak Spanish. Many people use the word gringo exclusively for Americans or American look-alikes. It's not uncommon for blonde people to be called gringo. Peruvians do not hesitate to greet you with "¡Hola, gringo!".
Generally, people are very friendly, peaceful and helpful. When in trouble, you mostly can rely on getting help. But as with any setting, it is always good to watch out for yourself and try to avoid bad situations. If you get into an argument, it is a good idea to remain amicable, but firm. Most of the time, you can find a compromise that satisfies everyone.

Jungle Treehouse adventure in the Amazon rain forest, Peru Travel Video Transcript:
So we are staying in the coolest place ever. We have just arrived at the Treehouse Lodge in the middle of the Amazon jungle. And we're going to be living in a tree house for the next few days. So come along and I'm going to show you our personal private tree house. And we're living in a tree house! We're living in a treehouse!
Every kids dream.
Okay, well we want to show you more of the property but right now we're about to head out on a jungle walk. We're going to be looking for medicinal plants and learning about their uses. It also just started pouring rain. So it is time for our jungle expedition.
So Sam, you look like you're ready for a jungle excursion.
Show us your footwear. And here is the leaf that is used to make the Juane. The traditional food from the Amazon jungle here in Peru.
So we are back from the jungle excursion. Yeah, that jungle walk was awesome. We learned so much about all of the different local plants and what they are used for in terms of different medicinal properties and also for food. And now we're off on a cool boat trip. We're just going to be cruising down the Amazon and looking for pink dolphins. Yes and maybe we'll stick around for sunset too.
Macau look! So we just spotted a sloth up in the tree. We wouldn't have seen it if it wasn't for our guide though. And this is sunset on the Amazon river. So that is the end of day one. How are you feeling about sleeping in this tree house? Awesome. A lot of adventure.
Well, good morning it is the start of day two and it was sure raining last night. Like thunderstorms, the whole deal.
We're going to try and spot some wildlife. We went out for a little excursion this morning and we've been traveling upstream and now we've arrived at a prime location to fish piranhas. So Sam, how are you feeling about that? Feeling good because you're going to stick your fingers in and they're going to bite them, right?
So we've going to use this small fish. Oh! To feed the piranha.
You want to try to splash the water. That is the way how to attract the piraña. Splashing the water. Calling the piranha. Okay, so I'm going try my hand at fishing for piranhas. I've got the bait here. Right here. Let's do this. Our first piraña.
Look at the teeth on that sucker. Oh my gosh I would not want to be bitten by one of those. That is scary.
You got one! Show it to us. I finally caught one. It was a big one too.
There you go. Sam's first piranha. Look at that. Probably my 20th attempt and I was not going to give up until I got one.
Now it is time for lunch. We are having ceviche. Our favorite as an appetizer. Wow, look at that.
So we are about to go on one more excursion this evening but before we head out we want to show you the rest of the property. So let's go in search of some tree houses.
We are now entering the bamboo forest.
Oh! Are they fighting? Yeah. Squack. Alright, so Sam is going to feed a monkey. Yes, I've got my chunk of banana. Now time to throw it.
So right now we are trekking through the mud in search of giant lily pads.
So we are meeting a sloth that was apparently rescued by a family when it was really young. So it lives with them in the house and it is very sleepy and slow. So oh, but it has woken up. It is eating. Pablito? Pablito is having lunch.
Okay so this morning we went fishing for piranha and now we are having it for dinner.

Macau look! So we just spotted a sloth up in the tree. We wouldn't have seen it if it wasn't for our guide though. And this is sunset on the Amazon river. So that is the end of day one. How are you feeling about sleeping in this tree house? Awesome. A lot of adventure.
Well, good morning it is the start of day two and it was sure raining last night. Like thunderstorms, the whole deal.
We're going to try and spot some wildlife. We went out for a little excursion this morning and we've been traveling upstream and now we've arrived at a prime location to fish piranhas. So Sam, how are you feeling about that? Feeling good because you're going to stick your fingers in and they're going to bite them, right?
So we've going to use this small fish. Oh! To feed the piranha.
You want to try to splash the water. That is the way how to attract the piraña. Splashing the water. Calling the piranha. Okay, so I'm going try my hand at fishing for piranhas. I've got the bait here. Right here. Let's do this. Our first piraña.
Look at the teeth on that sucker. Oh my gosh I would not want to be bitten by one of those. That is scary.
You got one! Show it to us. I finally caught one. It was a big one too.
There you go. Sam's first piranha. Look at that. Probably my 20th attempt and I was not going to give up until I got one.
Now it is time for lunch. We are having ceviche. Our favorite as an appetizer. Wow, look at that.
So we are about to go on one more excursion this evening but before we head out we want to show you the rest of the property. So let's go in search of some tree houses.
We are now entering the bamboo forest.
Oh! Are they fighting? Yeah. Squack. Alright, so Sam is going to feed a monkey. Yes, I've got my chunk of banana. Now time to throw it.
So right now we are trekking through the mud in search of giant lily pads.
So we are meeting a sloth that was apparently rescued by a family when it was really young. So it lives with them in the house and it is very sleepy and slow. So oh, but it has woken up. It is eating. Pablito? Pablito is having lunch.
Okay so this morning we went fishing for piranha and now we are having it for dinner.

It was built during the heyday of rubber trade using materials from all over the world, with furniture from Paris, marble from Italy, and steel from England. On the outside of the building, the dome was covered with 36,000 decorated ceramic tiles painted in the colors of the Brazilian national flag.
The first performance was given on January 7, 1897, with the Italian opera La Gioconda. The opera house was closed down soon after however as the rubber trade declined and Manaus lost its main source of income. There wasn’t a single performance in Teatro Amazonas for 90 years until 1990 when it reopened its doors.
Fernando de Noronha

Fernando de Noronha is a beautiful archipelago with pristine beaches, landscapes and wildlife, situated 354 km (220 miles) off the northeastern coast in Brazil. The archipelago was discovered by Amerigo Vespucci in 1503 and temporarily occupied by the Dutch and French before Portugal established dominion in 1737. Today only the largest of the 21 islands is inhabited with a population of about 3,500. The islands are a Mecca for divers and snorkelers with warm waters year-round and very good visibility even at depths of 50 meters.

Another well preserved colonial city, Olinda is located on the Brazil’s northeastern coast, just north of Recife. One of the great natural wonders of the world, Iguaçu Falls is situated on the border between Brazil and Argentina. The waterfall system consists of 275 falls along the Iguazu River. The most impressive of them all is the Devil’s Throat a U-shaped with a height of 82 meter (269 ft). The falls can be reached from the cities Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil and Puerto Iguazú in Argentina, as well as from Ciudad del Este in Paraguay. On the Brazilian side there is a long walkway along the canyon with an extension to the lower base of the Devil’s Throat.

The rainforest likely formed during the Eocene era. It appeared following a global reduction of tropical temperatures when the Atlantic Ocean had widened sufficiently to provide a warm, moist climate to the Amazon basin. The rainforest has been in existence for at least 55 million years, and most of the region remained free of savanna-type biomes at least until the current ice age, when the climate was drier and savanna more widespread.[4][5]
Following the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, the extinction of the dinosaurs and the wetter climate may have allowed the tropical rainforest to spread out across the continent. From 66–34 Mya, the rainforest extended as far south as 45°. Climate fluctuations during the last 34 million years have allowed savanna regions to expand into the tropics. During the Oligocene, for example, the rainforest spanned a relatively narrow band. It expanded again during the Middle Miocene, then retracted to a mostly inland formation at the last glacial maximum.[6] However, the rainforest still managed to thrive during these glacial periods, allowing for the survival and evolution of a broad diversity of species.[7]
uring the mid-Eocene, it is believed that the drainage basin of the Amazon was split along the middle of the continent by the Purus Arch. Water on the eastern side flowed toward the Atlantic, while to the west water flowed toward the Pacific across the Amazonas Basin. As the Andes Mountains rose, however, a large basin was created that enclosed a lake; now known as the Solimões Basin. Within the last 5–10 million years, this accumulating water broke through the Purus Arch, joining the easterly flow toward the Atlantic.[8][9]
There is evidence that there have been significant changes in Amazon rainforest vegetation over the last 21,000 years through the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and subsequent deglaciation. Analyses of sediment deposits from Amazon basin paleolakes and from the Amazon Fan indicate that rainfall in the basin during the LGM was lower than for the present, and this was almost certainly associated with reduced moist tropical vegetation cover in the basin.[10] There is debate, however, over how extensive this reduction was. Some scientists argue that the rainforest was reduced to small, isolated refugia separated by open forest and grassland;[11] other scientists argue that the rainforest remained largely intact but extended less far to the north, south, and east than is seen today.[12] This debate has proved difficult to resolve because the practical limitations of working in the rainforest mean that data sampling is biased away from the center of the Amazon basin, and both explanations are reasonably well supported by

Sahara Desert dust windblown to the Amazon
More than 56% of the dust fertilizing the Amazon rainforest comes from the Bodélé depression in Northern Chad in the Sahara desert. The dust contains phosphorus, important for plant growth. The yearly Sahara dust replaces the equivalent amount of phosphorus washed away yearly in Amazon soil from rains and floods.[13] Up to 50 million tonnes of Sahara dust per year are blown across the Atlantic Ocean.[14][15] NASA Video.
NASA's CALIPSO satellite has measured the amount of dust transported by wind from the Sahara to the Amazon: an average 182 million tons of dust are windblown out of the Sahara each year, at 15 degrees west longitude, across 1,600 miles (2,600 km) over the Atlantic Ocean (some dust falls into the Atlantic), then at 35 degrees West longitude at the eastern coast of South America, 27.7 million tons (15%) of dust fall over the Amazon basin, 132 million tons of dust remain in the air, 43 million tons of dust are windblown and falls on the Caribbean Sea, past 75 degrees west longitude.[16]
CALIPSO uses a laser range finder to scan the Earth's atmosphere for the vertical distribution of dust and other aerosols. CALIPSO regularly tracks the Sahara-Amazon dust plume. CALIPSO has measured variations in the dust amounts transported— an 86 percent drop between the highest amount of dust transported in 2007 and the lowest in 2011.
A possibility causing the variation is the Sahel, a strip of semi-arid land on the southern border of the Sahara. When rain amounts in the Sahel are higher, the volume of dust is lower. The higher rainfall could make more vegetation grow in the Sahel, leaving less sand exposed to winds to blow away

United World Films presents “The Earth And Its People: Tropical Lowland (The Amazon River, Brazil),” a 1949 black-and-white educational picture that takes the viewer to that South American destination. The film opens at mark 00:27 with a global illustration focusing on the area as a narrator explains how the 4,000-mile path of the Amazon begins in the Andes Mountains and cuts across the tropical lowland of South America to the Atlantic Ocean. This is followed by aerial views of the river as the Brazilian narrator explains at mark 01:20 how the river is the only way to reach some otherwise impenetrable South American regions. The narrator explains at mark 01:58 how during Brazil’s six-month rainy season, the river can rise up to 50 feet which can wash away vegetation and minerals in topsoil, making the ground fertile only for certain tropical rainforest vegetation but not food crops. “So in spite of its abundant vegetation the Amazon lowland is sometimes called a green desert,” the narrator says at mark 02:33. As the film continues, the narrator explains some of the waterways allow Brazilians to access areas where they can gather Brazil nuts (mark 03:40) or other nuts, as well as wild rubber trees (04:10), with men shown how they use the latex they collect to make items such as rubber shoes. Many who live in the Amazon are able to use nuts, rubber, and other material in trade with other settlements and market towns (mark 07:10). At mark 09:40 the film takes its viewer to visit a family that lives along the river as we catch a glimpse of everyday life in the Amazon, from their hammock beds to the cookhouse used to prepare meals, while starting at mark 15:25 we watch as the women make fishing nets used almost daily by the men of the family. Mark 18:10 takes the viewer to the city of Manaos (Manaus), Brazil, a principle shipping port for the vast region that is accessible only by water, and we see scenes of various products being loaded onboard various vessels and the films nears an end.

CAO Amazon Basin is a very limited new extension to CAO’s ultra-popular Brazilia blend. Just don’t expect more of the same, because this unique small-batch blend is like nothing ever before.
The special sauce used to create Amazon Basin is a tobacco called ’Braganca,’ a rare tobacco harvested from a remote region in the Amazonian rainforest. It’s really crazy, actually. Everything from its taste to the way it’s cultivated. Grown in a virgin, tropical land in the rainforest and harvested only once every 3 years, Braganca may be one of the most elusive tobaccos in the world. After the tobacco is harvested, it’s rolled by hand into tubes and fermented for 6 months. Then, it must be transported by canoe back to the mainland. Wild in every sense.
