As (m) millions of Chinese across the world celebrate the arrival of the year of the Rabbit, in a remote corner of South West China members of the Yi minority are carrying on their own new year celebrations.
Here in the mountainous forests of Yunnan province members of the A-Xi group of the Yi minority continue to practice an ancient courting ritual called moon dancing.
SUGGESTED VOICE-OVER:
Here in the mountains of South West China spring is very definitely already in the air.
Dressed in traditional costumes, young men and women from across the region gather to take part in the Moon Dance.
It all appears very innocent.
As the young women clap their hands, young men strum on their oversized guitars.
But there is more than mere dancing going on here.
According to the rules of the dance, if a young man spots a woman he likes, he can grab her and drag her away.
Taking part in the Moon Dance could be compared to going on a form of blind date.
Once grabbed the young man drags the young maiden, embarrassed and giggling, off into the forest, where the two are supposed to get to know each other better.
Young women who take part in the dancing insist there is nothing sordid about it.
It is just their way of bringing young men and women together, and maybe of finding a suitable partner.

The moon dance is the high point of festivals in this part of South West China, which also includes much singing, eating and drinking.
Communal banquets include a variety of traditional "wild foods", so called because their ingredients are not grown but gathered from the surrounding forests as the people here have done for thousands of years.
The area is poor, and many of the young people are tempted to leave, drawn to towns and cities in search of a more prosperous life.
But the Yi remain fiercely proud of their traditions.

"I feel very proud of the fact that I am a member of the Yi minority, especially the A-Xi group of the Yi minority. We have very beautiful traditions. At New Year or other festivals young men and women all come and take part in the moon dance. I feel very fortunate to be able to take part in this type of dancing. I feel really lucky to grow up here even though this place is very poor."

As night falls it is time for the fire dance.
The Yi people hold strongly animistic beliefs, seeing spirits and gods in the natural world around them, in the trees and the water, and especially in fire.
Young men painted to look like their tribal forebears of thousands of years ago carry a log to start the fire.
Young children join in, lighting torches of dried wood from the roaring fire.
Finally they all parade through the night carrying the torches, helping, they believe, to cleanse the village of bad spirits, disease and pestilence and heralding the start of another year.

THE PASSING (THE OFFICIAL AFRICAN HERITAGE MONTH VIDEO DOWNLOAD)
Research into the African past continues to reveal not only our common ancestry as a species but the possible origins of agricultural production and urban settlement, which ultimately laid the foundation for more complex societies.
The story of "The Passing" takes place during the geological era referred to by archaeologists as the Holocene Wet Phase, a remarkable period which transformed the vast Sahara desert into an thriving fertile grassland approximately 10,000 years ago. While much still remains unknown about this period, archaeological evidence suggests that, "(it) was probably the first way of life in human history to permit settlements of a hundred people or more" (Oliver, Roland, The African Experience, p 33).
Set in Saharan Africa during the Holocene Wet Phase, "THE PASSING" is an imaginative children's tale about a young African girl at the dawn of civilization whose innovative spirit and passion for new ideas challenges the conventions of her community. We offer the story as the official story of African Heritage Month focusing on the sense of purpose that ignites the human spirit, and it is our hope that The Passing will inspire young readers to value their own potential for greatness. Teachers will also find included a lesson plan designed to help students appreciate the purpose of African Heritage Month and its significance for all peoples as a celebration of our common African heritage.
A word from the Creators...
The creators of The Passing decided to put together a story that addresses African history outside of the context of slavery colonialism and civil rights. Instead we focused on the profound effect that the original cultures of Africa had on the rest of the word.
A word from the Illustrator...
Archaeology has revealed a small fragment of the culture that once thrived across the Sahara during the Holocene Wet Phase, but there are still many African cultures, such as the Khoi-San of South Africa, more commonly known as "pygmies", whose pre-literate way of life has survived for thousands of years. Rather than re-create a historically accurate picture of life in 9000 B.C., however, I decided to draw on well-known and more familiar iconic imagery that was abstract enough to be universal yet distinctly 'black' African. The stylized afros, reminiscent of 70's Afro-American funk musicians and artists is meant to convey the same spirit of cultural innovation shared by the members of Little Seed's society. By omitting the facial features and other physical details I hoped to convey the universal appeal of the story and its wider ramifications, leaving the viewer's imagination free to engage the illustrations on without being imposed on.

Western composers have noticed that the rhythm in a piece of qin music can change; once they seem to have got a beat, the beats change.
This is due to the fact that qin players may use some free rhythm in their playing. Whatever beat they use will depend on the emotion or the feeling of the player, and how he interprets the piece. However, some melodies have sections of fixed rhythm which is played the same way generally.

powerful playing, excellent musicality - dramatic and emotional: "The Ambush from all sides" (中国传统音乐经典琵琶名曲 《十面埋伏》), is undoubtedly the most famous pipa master piece from the Chinese traditional repertoire, performed by virtuoso soloist Liu Fang （劉芳）during a solo recital in the Pierre-Mercurre Hall of the Centre Pierre-Peladeau, on March 27, 2002, in Montreal, recorded by Mr. Zhou Fan of Montreal Multi-cultural TV, Chinese chanel.
Pipa is a Chinese traditional music instrument with over 2000 years of history. The "Ambush from ten side" is one of the most famous classical instrumental music of China.
With its highly virtuoso programmatic effects and tremendous power, this piece is regarded as the most representative of the "martial repertoire" of classical pipa solo. It describes the glorious victory of Liu Bang over Xiang Yu in 202 BC, the same theme as "The King doffs his Armour", however, from a totally different view point. There is no information about the composer, but some researches indicate that this piece might be dated back as early as the Chinese Tang Dynasty (618-917AD).

Dance of the Yao People
Dance of the Yao People (simplified: 瑶族舞曲; traditional: 瑤族舞曲; pinyin: Yáozú Wǔqǔ; sometimes translated as Dance of the Yao Tribe) is one of the best known and most popular Chinese instrumental compositions of the second half of the 20th century. It was composed collaboratively by Liu Tieshan (刘铁山) and Mao Yuan (茅沅) in 1952, inspired by the long drum dance (瑶族长鼓舞歌), a form of traditional festival music of the Yao people of southern and southwest China. It was premiered in Beijing in 1953.
History
Although it was originally composed for Western instruments, it is generally performed by Chinese traditional instruments (either for solo guzheng,video chamber ensemble, or orchestral).video It is also performed by ensembles or orchestras of Western instruments.video
The work achieved wide attention in 1954, when the arrangement for Chinese orchestra by the conductor Peng Xiuwen was disseminated throughout China. Other arrangements have been made by the Taiwanese composers Cheng Si-sum (鄭思森) and Chen Tscheng-hsiung (陳澄雄).

Yao people
The Yao nationality (its great majority branch is also known as Mien; Traditional Chinese: 瑤族, Simplified Chinese: 瑶族, Pinyin: Yáo zú; Vietnamese: người Dao) is a government classification for various minorities in China. They form one of the 55 ethnic minority groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China, where they reside in the mountainous terrain of the southwest and south. They also form one of the 54 ethnic groups officially recognized by Vietnam. In the last census in 2000, they numbered 2,637,421 in China, and roughly 470,000 in Vietnam.
History
Early history
The origins of the Yao can be traced back 2,000 years ago, starting in Hunan Province. The Yao and Miao people were among the rebels during the Miao Rebellions against the Ming dynasty. As the Han Chinese expanded in southern China, the Yao retreated into the highlands between Hunan and Guizhou to the north and Guangdong and Guangxi to the south, and stretching into eastern Yunnan. Around 1890 the Guangdong government started taking action against Yao in northwestern Guangdong.

As (m) millions of Chinese across the world celebrate the arrival of the year of the Rabbit, in a remote corner of South West China members of the Yi minority are carrying on their own new year celebrations.

As the young women clap their hands, young men strum on their oversized guitars.

According to the rules of the dance, if a young man spots a woman he likes, he can grab her and drag her away.
Taking part in the Moon Dance could be compared to going on a form of blind date.
Once grabbed the young man drags the young maiden, embarrassed and giggling, off into the forest, where the two are supposed to get to know each other better.
Young women who take part in the dancing insist there is nothing sordid about it.
It is just their way of bringing young men and women together, and maybe of finding a suitable partner.

The moon dance is the high point of festivals in this part of South West China, which also includes much singing, eating and drinking.
Communal banquets include a variety of traditional "wild foods", so called because their ingredients are not grown but gathered from the surrounding forests as the people here have done for thousands of years.
The area is poor, and many of the young people are tempted to leave, drawn to towns and cities in search of a more prosperous life.
But the Yi remain fiercely proud of their traditions.

"I feel very proud of the fact that I am a member of the Yi minority, especially the A-Xi group of the Yi minority. We have very beautiful traditions. At New Year or other festivals young men and women all come and take part in the moon dance. I feel very fortunate to be able to take part in this type of dancing. As night falls it is time for the fire dance.
The Yi people hold strongly animistic beliefs, seeing spirits and gods in the natural world around them, in the trees and the water, and especially in fire.
Young men painted to look like their tribal forebears of thousands of years ago carry a log to start the fire.
Young children join in, lighting torches of dried wood from the roaring fire.
Finally they all parade through the night carrying the torches, helping, they believe, to cleanse the village of bad spirits, disease and pestilence and heralding the start of another year.

Research into the African past continues to reveal not only our common ancestry as a species but the possible origins of agricultural production and urban settlement, which ultimately laid the foundation for more complex societies.
The story of "The Passing" takes place during the geological era referred to by archaeologists as the Holocene Wet Phase, a remarkable period which transformed the vast Sahara desert into an thriving fertile grassland approximately 10,000 years ago. While much still remains unknown about this period, archaeological evidence suggests that, "(it) was probably the first way of life in human history to permit settlements of a hundred people or more" (Oliver, Roland, The African Experience, p 33).
Set in Saharan Africa during the Holocene Wet Phase, "THE PASSING" is an imaginative children's tale about a young African girl at the dawn of civilization whose innovative spirit and passion for new ideas challenges the conventions of her community. We offer the story as the official story of African Heritage Month focusing on the sense of purpose that ignites the human spirit, and it is our hope that The Passing will inspire young readers to value their own potential for greatness. Teachers will also find included a lesson plan designed to help students appreciate the purpose of African Heritage Month and its significance for all peoples as a celebration of our common African heritage.

The creators of The Passing decided to put together a story that addresses African history outside of the context of slavery colonialism and civil rights. Instead we focused on the profound effect that the original cultures of Africa had on the rest of the word.
A word from the Illustrator...
Archaeology has revealed a small fragment of the culture that once thrived across the Sahara during the Holocene Wet Phase, but there are still many African cultures, such as the Khoi-San of South Africa, more commonly known as "pygmies", whose pre-literate way of life has survived for thousands of years. Rather than re-create a historically accurate picture of life in 9000 B.C., however, I decided to draw on well-known and more familiar iconic imagery that was abstract enough to be universal yet distinctly 'black' African. The stylized afros, reminiscent of 70's Afro-American funk musicians and artists is meant to convey the same spirit of cultural innovation shared by the members of Little Seed's society. By omitting the facial features and other physical details I hoped to convey the universal appeal of the story and its wider ramifications, leaving the viewer's imagination free to engage the illustrations on without being imposed on.

powerful playing, excellent musicality - dramatic and emotional: "The Ambush from all sides" (中国传统音乐经典琵琶名曲 《十面埋伏》), is undoubtedly the most famous pipa master piece from the Chinese traditional repertoire, performed by virtuoso soloist Liu Fang （劉芳）during a solo recital in the Pierre-Mercurre Hall of the Centre Pierre-Peladeau, on March 27, 2002, in Montreal, recorded by Mr. Zhou Fan of Montreal Multi-cultural TV, Chinese chanel.
Pipa is a Chinese traditional music instrument with over 2000 years of history. The "Ambush from ten side" is one of the most famous classical instrumental music of China.
With its highly virtuoso programmatic effects and tremendous power, this piece is regarded as the most representative of the "martial repertoire" of classical pipa solo. It describes the glorious victory of Liu Bang over Xiang Yu in 202 BC, the same theme as "The King doffs his Armour", however, from a totally different view point. There is no information about the composer, but some researches indicate that this piece might be dated back as early as the Chinese Tang Dynasty (618-917AD).

Cette pièce très ancienne, considérée comme emblématique de la musique du répertoire martial wu pour pipa, décrit la victoire de larmée Han de Liu Bang sur Xiang Yu en 202 avant J-C. Il sagit de lépisode historique qui fait suite à la pièce épique Bawang xiejia « Le Roi de Chu se défait de son armure » : on assiste maintenant à laffrontement des deux armées et à la bataille. Le pipa, ici dans son rôle dinstrument daccompagnement dun récit épique, évoque, par des accords et bruitages particuliers, le heurt des épées, le choc des cuirasses, la mêlée des chevaux, les cris et clameurs des combattants, etc. Linterprétation exige une grande virtuosité et une maîtrise des techniques de jeu liées à ce répertoire épique, plein deffets sonores spéciaux.

1.The Yao women of Huang lu village in Guanxi province of China are well known for their long hairs.

4.If any hair falls off when combing their hair, they would pick it up one by one and coil in their hair again.
5.Their hair is heavy in weight but they get used to it and demand 10 to 15 Yuans from the tourists who wish to see it.
6.The Red Yao People believe a womens long hair brings logevity, happiness & prosperity.
7.When you go to this village, you will see women with long hair every where.
8.Their hair is bright, black and good looking and can grow upto 1.5 meters in length.
9.The Yao women like to wash their hair together in groups once every 2 days in river water.
10.During rainy season the river becomes flooded with strong currents hence they wash their hair in backyards.
11.This is the water which has been used to wash rice
12.It smells sour because they have fermented it for about a week
13.It is then poured into a ceramic pot and peelings of polemo and smashed tea seed residues are added to it
14.After the water is boiled and cooled down, all The Girls in the village wash their hair with it
15.During rainy season they transport the water to their houses with bamboos and they like washing their hair in backyards.
16.After immersing and combing their hairs in the water of washing rice for 30 minutes they began to rinse their hair with spring water from the bamboo pipes.
17.Women in Yao village never use hot water to wash their hairs even in winter because they think clean spring water is warm in winter and cool during the summer season
18.which makes it the best hair tonic.

1.The Yao women of Huang lu village in Guanxi province of China are well known for their long hairs.
2.They only have one hair cut in their life at the age of 18 or 20.
3.They save their hair even after cutting it and never throw them away, hence they have atleast 2 bunches of hair.

16.After immersing and combing their hairs in the water of washing rice for 30 minutes they began to rinse their hair with spring water from the bamboo pipes.
17.Women in Yao village never use hot water to wash their hairs even in winter because they think clean spring water is warm in winter and cool during the summer season

They form one of the 55 ethnic minority groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China, where they reside in the mountainous terrain of the southwest and south. They also form one of the 54 ethnic groups officially recognized by Vietnam. In the last census in 2000, they numbered 2,637,421 in China, and roughly 470,000 in Vietnam.

The typical houses of the Yao are rectangular and they have structures made of wood and bamboo. Normally it has three rooms: a room and two dormitories in the lateral side. Each one of these rooms has a small oven to cook.
The men and the women cover their heads with a black or red scarf. Some women substitute this scarf by a turban that can adopt different forms.
The traditional suit of the women is of bright colors. They also decorate their shirts with decorations made out of silver.
In Vietnam, Yao people celebrate many exciting and meaningful festivals such as Nhơn chung lỉnh (literally: Red rice, Green rice"), Nhiang chằm đao (literally: Jumping Festival).
Religion[edit]
The Yao, or Iu-Mien, practice Yao Taoism, a religion based on medieval Chinese Taoism,[5] although many have converted to Buddhism and few to Christianity. Though some people have converted to other religions, many still practice their native traditions.
Marriage[edit]
Marriage is traditionally arranged by go-betweens who represent the boy's family to the girl's parents. If the union is acceptable, a bride price is negotiated, typically ranging from three to ten silver bars, worth about $100 U.S. dollars each, a partial artifact from the opium trade. The wedding takes place in two installments, first at the bride's house, followed by a procession to the groom's house where a second ceremony occurs.
