While a student at California State University, Northridge, acclaimed film director Donald Petrie was determined to get as much out of his education as he could.
He is now back at his alma mater for the spring 2015 semester as a faculty member in CSUN’s film and theater programs.
Petrie, a member of the board of the Directors Guild of America and director of such cinema hits as “Grumpy Old Men” and “Miss Congeniality,” said there is one lesson he hopes to instill in his students — learning doesn’t stop when they graduate.

Acclaimed film director Donald Petrie, a member of the board of the Directors Guild of America, is best known for such films as “Grumpy Old Men” with Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau and Ann-Margaret; “Miss Congeniality” with Sandra Bullock, Michael Caine and Benjamin Bratt; “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” with Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey; and “Welcome to Mooseport” with Ray Romano and Gene Hackman. He is also credited with providing Julia Roberts with her breakthrough role in his first film as a director, the award-winning “Mystic Pizza.”
After graduating from CSUN in 1976 with a bachelor of arts in theatre, Petrie worked for a number of years as an actor, appearing on television shows such as “The Waltons” and “Eight is Enough.” A job directing a successful state production of Albert Innaurato’s “Gemini” sparked his interest in directing TV and film.
He spent two years at the American Film Institute, then a year as “a fly on the wall” on any TV show that would let him. That experience led to his first job as a television director for Steven Spielberg’s “Amazing Stories.”
A tour Petrie took of CSUN’s film program nearly a decade ago led to an invitation to host the university’s annual senior film showcase. He was then invited to serve as artist-in-residence for a year, and hehas mentored senior film students for several years. He is spending this spring as a faculty member in CSUN’s film and theatre programs.

Donald Mark Petrie (born April 2, 1954) is an American film director. Petrie was born in New York City, New York, the son of Dorothea (née Grundy), a television producer, actor, and novelist, and Daniel Petrie, a director. He is the brother of Daniel Petrie, Jr..
Petrie has acted and guest-starred on television programs. His first directorial job was on the set of The Equalizer, a private detective TV series, in 1985. While a student at California State University, Northridge, acclaimed film director Donald Petrie was determined to get as much out of his education as he could.
He is now back at his alma mater for the spring 2015 semester as a faculty member in CSUN’s film and theater programs.
Petrie, a member of the board of the Directors Guild of America and director of such cinema hits as “Grumpy Old Men” and “Miss Congeniality,” said there is one lesson he hopes to instill in his students — learning doesn’t stop when they graduate.

He spent two years at the American Film Institute, then a year as “a fly on the wall” on any TV show that would let him. That experience led to his first job as a television director for Steven Spielberg’s “Amazing Stories.”

She originally made her screen debut in Donald Petrie’s Mystic Pizza, co-starring Julia Roberts, then went on to star in Oliver Stone’s Born on the 4th of July, Emir Kusturica’s Arizona Dream, and Nancy Savoca’s Household Saints, for which she won a Spirit award. She also starred in Alan Rudolph’s Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle, Robert Altman’s Short Cuts and Pret-À-Porter, Abel Ferrara’s The Addiction, Ransom opposite Mel Gibson, and The Haunting alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones.
On television, Taylor has starred in JJ Abrams’ Almost Human on Fox as well as the Netflix original series Hemlock Grove. She has also appeared in The Good Wife, State of Mind, The X-Files, and the hit TV series Six Feet Under, which earned her two Emmy nominations and a SAG Award.
On the stage, she has most recently appeared in the Steven Soderbergh-directed production of The Library at The Public Theater. She also appeared in The New Group’s productions of Mourning Becomes Electra and Aunt Dan & Lemon, Manhattan Theater Club’s The Dead Eye Boy and many others.
