Animal Domestication - Why Some Animals Can't Be Domesticated
The domestication of animals has had a huge impact on human history. But have you ever wondered why we've only been able to domesticate some animals and not others?
In this video we look at the six reasons why some animals have never successfully been domesticated, as outlined in the book 'Guns, Germs & Steel' by Jared Diamond. We then look at a Russian experiment which attempted to domesticate silver foxes, to understand how domestication can change an animal.

An Evolutionary Journey through Domestication
Barbara Schaal, Mary-Dell Chilton Distinguished Professor of Biology and Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, Washington University in St. Louis
As the earliest farmers began to select wild plants and animals that had desirable traits, they initiated a series of genetic changes in these species that gradually made them more suitable for agriculture. Plants became easier to grow, had greater yields, and were of higher quality. Animal species exhibited favorable changes in behavior, coat color, and reproductive traits. Barbara Schaal discussed how the artificial selection of these species—a pivotal technological achievement—has influenced their genetics, evolution, and capacity to flourish in the care of humans.

History Of Domestication
About 18,000 years ago, dogs were on their way on becoming man’s best friend. Domestication is the process of adapting wild plants and animals for human use and domestic species are raised for food, work, clothing, medicine, and many other uses. Yes! Dogs weren’t the only species that became domesticated by our ancestors. There are many other plants and animals that were cared for by humans.
The first attempts at domestication of animals and plants apparently were made in the Old World during the Mesolithic Period. Most of the domestic animals familiar to us today were domesticated not long after people began farming and living in permanent settlements, between 8000 and 2500 BC. As for plants, people first domesticated plants about 10,000 years ago, collecting and planting the seeds of wil...

This video gives a list of domestic animals,[1] also including a list of animals which are or may be currently undergoing the process of domestication and animals that have an extensive relationship with humans beyond simple predation. This includes species which are semi-domesticated, undomesticated but captive-bred on a commercial scale, or commonly wild-caught, at least occasionally captive-bred, and tameable. In order to be considered fully domesticated, most species have undergone significant genetic, behavioural and morphological changes from their wild ancestors, while others have changed very little from their wild ancestors despite hundreds or thousands of years of potential selective breeding. A number of factors determine how quickly any changes may occur in a species, but there is not always a desire to improve a species from its wild form. Domestication is a gradual process, so there is no precise moment in the history of a given species when it can be considered to have become fully domesticated.
Archaeozoology has identified three classes of animal domesticates:
1. Pets (e.g. dogs, cats, guinea pigs etc.)
2. Farm animals; livestock (e.g. cattle, sheep, pigs, goats etc.)
3. Beasts of burden, pack animals etc. (e.g., horses, camels, donkeys etc.).

As for plants, people first domesticated plants about 10,000 years ago, collecting and planting the seeds of wild plants, making sure they got as much water and sun as they needed to grow.
