The troposphere is the lowest portion of Earth's atmosphere. It contains approximately 75% of the atmosphere's mass and 99% of its water vapour and aerosols. The average depth of the troposphere is approximately 17 km (11 mi) in the middle latitudes. It is deeper in the tropics, up to 20 km (12 mi), and shallower near the polar regions, approximately 7 km (4.3 mi) in winter. The lowest part of the troposphere, where friction with the Earth's surface influences air flow, is the planetary boundary layer. This layer is typically a few hundred meters to 2 km (1.2 mi) deep depending on the landform and time of day. The border between the troposphere and stratosphere, is marked by a temperature inversion called the tropopause.
The word troposphere derives from the Greek: tropos for "change" reflecting the fact that turbulent mixing plays an important role in the troposphere's structure and behaviour. Most of the phenomena we associate with day-to-day weather occur in the troposphere.

Mysteries of the Sun The new slickly produced 5 part series out of NASA is Top Notch. An impressive script alongside stunning visuals (both NASA animations and space craft photographs/videos) They delve into topics unknown by most, and explain them in a way that can be understood by astronomy fans slightly above layman. In This Episode: Earth's Upper Atmosphere Certain layers, high up in the atmosphere also respond to incoming energy from the sun. These layers contain charged particles and so naturally respond to an influx of magnetic energy. Understanding such variability is crucial since it can, in turn, degrade radio communication as well as satellite orbits. Learn about the troposphere. I forgot to mention that 75% of the mass of the atmosphere is squeezed into this thin layer.
The atmosphere on Earth is divided into five layers. Troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere. Troposphere is the Lowermost layer of the atmosphere and it contains half of the earth's atmosphere. It begins at the surface of the earth and extends out to about 4-12 miles. Air we breathe is present in this layer. All the weather changes take place in this layer. Above the troposphere is the stratosphere, which extends to about 30-35 miles above the earth's surface. Ozone layer, which absorbs harmful rays from the sun, is present in Stratosphere. Jet planes fly through this layer of atmosphere as it is the most stable layer. Mesosphere lies from about 35 to 50 miles above the surface of the earth . The air is very thin here and molecules are great distances apa...

Sit right next to me
Against the glass where we both can see
Focus on the ground
In disbelief of where we used to be
What should I do now
I'm upside down fighting with gravity
I'll just lock the door
And they won't know
How to find me
I couldn't share it
You never saw it
Coming around
Even the bad parts
Move along
Better than they should
Now I'm waiting here to disappear
Have you ever been so tired of yourself
And I'll meet you here in the troposphere
Lately I just haven't been myself
Back here on the ground
You're halfway gone
And the traffic drowns you out
Driving past high school
I grew up here
Looking at you
I couldn't share it
You never saw it
Coming around
Even the bad parts
Move along
Better than they should
Now I'm waiting here to disappear
Have you ever been so tired of yourself
And I'll meet you here in the troposphere
Lately I just haven't been myself
