SAMBALPUR: A fire broke out in the Central Hospital of the Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) at Mandlia in Jharsuguda district on Sunday. It was caused due to a short circuit in the air conditioner of the X-Ray room of the hospital.
The hospital staff first noticed the smoke coming out of the X-Ray room at 5pm. Subsequently, a disaster response team of the MCL was informed about the incident.
They rushed a fire tender and put out the blaze in one and a half hours. "As soon as the staff informed me about the smoke room, I alerted the rescue team," said Dr Ranjan of Central Hospital. The X-Ray room of the 150- bedded Central Hospital lies next to the out patient department (OPD) of the health centre. Since the OPD was shut when the fire broke out, no one was there near the spot. However, some papers and articles were damaged in the mishap.
"Had the fire broken out in any other ward of the hospital, the situation would have different," said Brajarajnagar resident, Rajiv Singh. "We reached the hospital within 10 minutes of getting a call from them and immediately doused the fire . No one was present inside the room as it was locked," said Ashok Kumar, superintendent rescue team, MCL.
