Ohio i/oʊˈhaɪ.oʊ/ is a state in the midwestern region of the United States. Ohio is the 34th largest by area, the 7th most populous, and the 10th most densely populated of the 50 United States. The state's capital and largest city is Columbus.
The state takes its name from the Ohio River. The name originated from the Iroquois word ohi-yo’, meaning "great river" or "large creek." Partitioned from the Northwest Territory, the state was admitted to the Union as the 17th state (and the first under the Northwest Ordinance) on March 1, 1803. Ohio is historically known as the "Buckeye State" (relating to the Ohio buckeye tree, and Ohioans are also known as "Buckeyes."
The government of Ohio is composed of the executive branch, led by the Governor; the legislative branch, which comprises the Ohio General Assembly; and the judicial branch, which is led by the state Supreme Court. Ohio occupies 16 seats in the United States House of Representatives. Ohio is known for its status as both a swing state and a bellwether in national elections. Six Presidents of the United States have been elected who had Ohio as their home state.
A supreme court is the highest court within the hierarchy of many legal jurisdictions. Other descriptions for such courts include court of last resort, instance court, judgment court, apex court, and highest court of appeal. Broadly speaking, the decisions of a supreme court are not subject to further review by any other court. Supreme courts typically function primarily as appellate courts, hearing appeals from decisions of lower trial courts, or from intermediate-level appellate courts.
However, not all highest courts are named as such. Civil law states do not tend to have singular highest courts. Additionally, the highest court in some jurisdictions is not named the "Supreme Court", for example, the High Court of Australia; this is because decisions by the High Court could formerly be appealed to the Privy Council. On the other hand, in some places the court named the "Supreme Court" is not in fact the highest court; examples include the New York Supreme Court, the Supreme Courts of several Canadian provinces/territories and the former Supreme Court of Judicature of England and Wales, which are all superseded by higher Courts of Appeal.

Christine Long reports: The legal battle over Toledo's red light and speed cameras took center stage in the state capital on Wednesday. The Ohio Supreme Court in Columbus heard oral arguments in the lawsuit challenging how Toledo fines drivers caught on camera. It's a case that puts the fate of the city's red light and speeding camera program on the line. Based on comments and questions from the justices during the nearly 45 minute hearing, the Ohio Supreme Court appears split on the issue of whether the camera system is improperly bypassing the courts. However, justices did not make a decision in the case of Walker v. Toledo today. "Walker has alleged they have my money under this unconstitutional ordinance and I want it back," says Andrew Mayle, the Fremont attorney representi...

Mapp v. Ohio was a landmark case in criminal procedure, in which the United States Supreme Court decided that evidence obtained in violation of the Fourth Amendment, which protects against "unreasonable searches and seizures," may not be used in state law criminal prosecutions in state courts, as well, as had previously been the law, as in federal criminal law prosecutions in federal courts.
People all over Ohio are outraged. The Ohio Supreme Court ruled that that you can be sited with a traffic ticket with no other evidence than a police officer visually seeing you drive. In a 5-to-1 decision, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled an officer's eye is strong enough evidence to support a speeding ticket and conviction. Something is wrong with the Ohio Supreme Court, and it affects all of us. This November we can end the injustice. Vote for Judge Mary Jane Trapp. Vote for Justice Eric Brown. In our criminal justice class we had to reenact a Supreme Court case. So my group chose Mapp vs Ohio. The case was about a bombing suspect allegedly in Ms.Mapp's house but when they asked to search her house she said no. So the police left and got an illegally warrant and found no sign of the bomber/bombing equipment but they did find pornography. But they were looking for a bomber or bombing equipment not pornography so she was arrested for the pornography. The problem though was that it was an illegal search and seizure. So instead of using pornography we used an unconscious victim so it was just a minor change to the reenacting.
