Wilhelm Richard Wagner (/ˈvɑːɡnər/; German: [ˈʁiçaʁt ˈvaːɡnɐ]; 22 May 1813 – 13 February 1883) was a German composer, theatre director, polemicist, and conductor who is primarily known for his operas (or, as some of his later works were later known, "music dramas"). Unlike most opera composers, Wagner wrote both the libretto and the music for each of his stage works. Initially establishing his reputation as a composer of works in the romantic vein of Weber and Meyerbeer, Wagner revolutionised opera through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk ("total work of art"), by which he sought to synthesise the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts, with music subsidiary to drama, and which was announced in a series of essays between 1849 and 1852. Wagner realised these ideas most fully in the first half of the four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung).
His compositions, particularly those of his later period, are notable for their complex textures, rich harmonies and orchestration, and the elaborate use of leitmotifs—musical phrases associated with individual characters, places, ideas or plot elements. His advances in musical language, such as extreme chromaticism and quickly shifting tonal centres, greatly influenced the development of classical music. His Tristan und Isolde is sometimes described as marking the start of modern music.

The Ride of the Valkyries (German: Walkürenritt or Ritt der Walküren) is the popular term for the beginning of Act III of Die Walküre, the second of the four operas by Richard Wagner that comprise Der Ring des Nibelungen. The main theme of the ride, the leitmotif labelled Walkürenritt was first written down by the composer on 23 July 1851. The preliminary draft for the Ride was composed in 1854 as part of the composition of the entire opera which was fully orchestrated by the end of the first quarter of 1856. Together with the Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin, the Ride of the Valkyries is one of Wagner's best-known pieces. In the opera-house, the Ride, which takes around eight minutes, begins in the prelude to the Act, building up successive layers of accompaniment until the curtain rises to r...

Lohengrin is a romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1850. The story of the eponymous character is taken from medieval German romance, notably the Parzival of Wolfram von Eschenbach and its sequel, Lohengrin, written by a different author, itself inspired by the epic of Garin le Loherain. It is part of the Knight of the Swan tradition. The opera has proved inspirational towards other works of art. Among those deeply moved by the fairy-tale opera was the young King Ludwig II of Bavaria. 'Der Märchenkönig' ('The Fairy-tale King') as he was dubbed later built his ideal fairy-tale castle and dubbed it "New Swan Stone," or "Neuschwanstein", after the Swan Knight. It was King Ludwig's patronage that later gave Wagner the means and opportunity ...

This is a rap I made for my upcoming project in Music & Society. I had to do a project on 1850's Germany and composer Richard Wagner. Knowing that I don't really need this credit, I wanted to have fun with this project which is why there are some facts in here that aren't true. Y'know. Kind of spice things up. Enjoy. Lyrics: Yo, my name is Dick Wagner and you best be keen. I was born May 22nd, 1813 in my home of Germany, Leipzig represent. The honies are fly. Everywhere else? Get bent! As a kid, I was trying to get my read on. Reading Bill Shakespeare, everything else was a big yawn. But who would've guessed that little kid would grow up to be bustin' mad music through operas and symphonies. Call me a fascist, c'mon motherf*ckers. I'm anti-semetic? I'll take you on moth...
Overture from "Tannhäuser" and "Chor der Sirenen". "Tannhäuser" (full title, "Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg"), is a german opera in three acts, music and text by Richard Wagner (1813-1883), based on the two German legends of Tannhäuser and the song contest at Wartburg. The story centers on the struggle between sacred and profane love, and redemption through love, a theme running through most of Wagner's mature work. Heinrich Heine had provided Wagner with the inspiration for Der fliegende Holländer. Wagner drew on Heine for the plot of Tannhäuser: Heine's sardonic poem Elementargeister, telling of the lure of the grotto of Venus, was published in 1837 in Der Salon. Wagner also drew material from E. T. A. Hoffmann's story The Singer's Contest and Ludwig Tieck's 1799 story Fai...

In 1954, after eight years, composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold returned to the movies for the last time. It was not because he was longing for, but because his fear, that if he would not write the arrangements for the new Richard Wagner movie, somebody else could do it in a "modernistic disrespectful" way, as he said in a radio interview, aired at the first of October 1954. In the last 20 minutes of the movie a montage of scenes exists, which presents Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen"-circle, reduced from its full running time of about 16 HOURS to just 5 MINUTES. As the actor, who should play the role of the conductor Hans Richter did not show up on the set, the director of this movie, Wilhelm (William) Dieterle asked Korngold, who was on the set to show actors like Alan Badel how to conduc...

At last, the gods prepare to enter their new home. Donner summons a thunderstorm to clear the air. After the storm has ended, Froh creates a rainbow bridge that stretches to the gate of the castle. Fricka asks Wotan about the name of Valhalla, and he replies enigmatically that its meaning will become clear when his plans come to fruition. Loge, who knows that the end of the gods is coming, does not follow the others into Valhalla; he tells the audience that he is tempted to destroy the gods and all they have deceitfully acquired. Conductor: Sergiu Celibidache & Münchner Philharmoniker Apart from the operas, Wagner composed a small number of pieces; this stems from his reluctance to conceive music which didn't belong to the sacredness of the drama, fundamental expression of his thought. The "Siegfried Idyll" is a symphonic poem for chamber orchestra, composed by Richard Wagner (1813-1883) as a birthday present to his second wife, Cosima, after the birth of their son Siegfried in 1869. It was first performed on Christmas morning, 25 December 1870, by a small ensemble on the stairs of their villa at Tribschen. Wagner's opera "Siegfried", which was premiered in 1876, incorporates music from the Idyll. It was once thought that the Idyll borrowed musical ideas intended for the opera, but it is now known that the opposit...
