Xi's State Visit Adds Weight to Deep-rooted China Cambodia Friendship

Chinese President Xi Jinping's two-day state visit to Cambodia, which concluded Friday, has added weight to the two countries' deep-rooted traditional friendship and bilateral cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. The signing of 31 cooperation documents Thursday will certainly inject more vitality into the close bond between China and Cambodia. From Phnom Penh International Airport to Cambodian Royal Palace, Xi was given a red carpet treatment by the Cambodian royal family. Chinese flags, banners and large displays of both countries' landmarks could be seen at the capital's main street, creating a strong atmosphere of warm welcome. Cementing the traditional friendship is obviously the main theme that has run through Xi's meeting with the royal family and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. After meeting with King Norodom Sihamoni, Xi laid a wreath at the statue of King Father Norodom Sihanouk in the company of Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk. While meeting Queen Mother Monineath, Xi said the China-Cambodia friendship was deeply rooted in the hearts of both peoples. In talks between Xi and Hun Sen, the two leaders agreed that the two countries should continue to be "highly trusted friends, loyal partners and a community of shared destiny in weal and woe." Hun Sen said Cambodia and China have enjoyed a traditional friendship that was cultivated by late Cambodian King Father Norodom Sihanouk, Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and other Chinese leaders of previous generations. The traditional China-Cambodia friendship, tested by the times and a changing international landscape, has grown strong like a luxuriant tree thanks to efforts made by successive leaders of both countries. In 1958, China and Cambodia established diplomatic ties, opening a new chapter in their bilateral relations. Over the past 58 years, successive leaders of both countries have maintained close interactions and developed a close bond of friendship. King Father Norodom Sihanouk once fondly said that the China-Cambodia friendship is like a flower that never withers and will always blossom under the bright sky. Entering the new era, the China-Cambodia friendship has continued to flourish, beaming with new vitality. The two countries enjoy deep political trust and win-win economic cooperation. Both carried out fruitful cooperation in various areas, and maintained close consultation and coordination on international and regional affairs, setting an example of how two countries should treat each other as equals and cooperate with absolute sincerity, as wrote in Xi's signed article titled "China and Cambodia: Good Neighbors and Trusted Friends." Xi arrived in Bangladesh on Friday as his second stop of visit after Cambodia. The trip will also take Xi to the western Indian state of Goa, where he will attend a summit of the emerging-market bloc of BRICS, which groups Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
