JOSEPH RAYMOND CONNIFF (November 6, 1916 -- October 12, 2002) was an American bandleader and arranger best known for his Ray Conniff Singers during the 1960s.
Conniff was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts, and learned to play the trombone from his father. He studied music arranging from a course book. After serving in the U.S. Army in World War II (where he worked under Walter Schumann), he joined the Artie Shaw big band and wrote many arrangements for him. After his stint with Shaw he was then hired by Mitch Miller, then head of A&R; at Columbia Records, as their home arranger, working with several artists including Rosemary Clooney, Marty Robbins, Frankie Laine, Johnny Mathis, Guy Mitchell and Johnnie Ray. He wrote a top 10 arrangement for Don Cherry's "Band of Gold" in 1955, a single that sold more than a million copies.

"Watercolor of Brazil" was featured in Saludos Amigos (1942) and "Na Baixa do Sapateiro" in The Three Caballeros (1944), both Disney films. The two songs became international hits, and have been recorded by hundreds of artists around the world. Among his major interpreters are Carmen Miranda and João Gilberto.
In 1945, his song "Rio de Janeiro", featured in the 1944 film Brazil, was one of the five finalists nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
His song "Aquarela do Brasil" was used as the main theme of the 1985 film "Brazil".
He died of liver cirrhosis in 1964.

Conniff was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts, and learned to play the trombone from his father. He studied music arranging from a course book. After serving in the U.S. Army in World War II (where he worked under Walter Schumann), he joined the Artie Shaw big band and wrote many arrangements for him. After his stint with Shaw he was then hired by Mitch Miller, then head of A&R; at Columbia Records, as their home arranger, working with several artists including Rosemary Clooney, Marty Robbins, Frankie Laine, Johnny Mathis, Guy Mitchell and Johnnie Ray. He wrote a top 10 arrangement for Don Cherry's "Band of Gold" in 1955, a single that sold more than a million copies.

Barroso's two best-known compositions are the sambas "Aquarela do Brasil" ("Watercolor of Brazil"), written in 1939, and "Na Baixa do Sapateiro" ("Bahia"), composed a year earlier. "Watercolor of Brazil" was featured in Saludos Amigos (1942) and "Na Baixa do Sapateiro" in The Three Caballeros (1944), both Disney films. The two songs became international hits, and have been recorded by hundreds of artists around the world. Among his major interpreters are Carmen Miranda and João Gilberto.
In 1945, his song "Rio de Janeiro", featured in the 1944 film Brazil, was one of the five finalists nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
His song "Aquarela do Brasil" was used as the main theme of the 1985 film "Brazil".
He died of liver cirrhosis in 1964.

Ary Barroso dominou a música popular brasileira durante as décadas de 30, 40 e 50 e no início da de 60. Sua personalidade avassaladora está presente na chamada fase ouro (1928-1948) de nossa música popular.
Em 1929 editou as suas primeiras composições e até 1964, ano de sua morte, é uma presença marcante na vida brasileira. O sucesso no exterior de Aquarela do Brasil, em 1944, levaria Ary a fazer diversas viagens aos Estados Unidos, sendo uma delas para receber o diploma da Academia de Ciências e Artes Cinematográficas de Hollywood.
Seu prestígio no Brasil não decorria apenas do grande compositor e poeta que era. Foi pianista, radialista dos mais populares, regente, locutor esportivo.
Mas é Ary Barroso compositor, um dos maiores do Brasil, que recebe a homenagem de Gal Costa numa seleção representativa do que deixou e fez da nossa música popular uma das coisas mais bonitas desse país. Sozinho e com outras parceiros o LP Aquarela do Brasil, de Gal Costa, é um registro da força e da atualidade de Ary Barroso. E foi com grande felicidade que acompanhei o carinho e dedicação de Gal Costa desde os primeiros contatos com as velhas gravações que ouvíamos até a seleção final do repertório. Ela aqui está inteira, dando a sua alma e o seu talento para que as gerações mais recentes recebam como lançamento essas 12 composições de Ary Barroso.

O Programa "Direto ao Ponto" mostra pra vocês com imagens e narração de Aldenir Militão um pouco da história do Parque Ari Barroso. Em destaque nessa edição o vídeo mostra como funcionava o abastecimento do ponto "Turístico Principal" do Parque, desde sua casa de bombas até chegar na cascata e formar a belíssima queda d'água que abasteciam também os açudes, conhecidos como(Açudão do Parque).
