Today (7 December) sees The Drum launch a new video series examining the myriad reasons behind personal exits from the marketing world. Why I Left Advertising’s first subject, One Young World co-founder Kate Robertson, details her industry insights only garnered after resigning from her position as president of Havas Worldwide in 2015.
Kate Robertson unequivocally believes advertising is a young person’s game: “You leave because you get old,” she says. “The pressure, the relentless need to keep up, to keep abreast of changes and to stay fresh, and keep your mind open, and constantly come up with new ideas…the creativity that you require around process, and people, and different ways of working…being young is a really good thing.”
An early career selling radio advertising in South Africa led the co-founder of One Young World to spend the majority of her working life in Europe with shops such as J. Walter Thompson and Sholz & Friends, before climbing the ladder of Havas to become global president and UK chairman. Now, at the age of 61 and with a politically significant global conference to pull off every year, she is – quite understandably – “tired”, yet also "probably the happiest" she's ever been.
Yet Robertson cannot claim age as the sole reason for getting out of advertising. Ostensibly minor factors (the departure of her co-founder David Jones from Havas, regime change, a general shift in power in favour of the industry’s purchasing directors) may have contributed, but the fact of the matter was Robertson already had One Young World – a global forum for young leaders – on her lap.
It was Robertson’s experience of the Apartheid-era South Africa that fueled her passion for the subject. Yet she never intended One Young World to take over her life. It was only after five years that she decided to "take it really seriously" and resigned from the network in April 2015. That November she hosted the first Asia-based One Young World in Bangkok; this year she was introducing the likes of Emma Watson and Justin Tredeau on stage in Ottawa.
The charity has just moved into a new, bigger office space behind the National Gallery and the team is currently in the planning for 2017’s conference to be held in Bogotá, Colombia.
“Looking at the industry from the outside is a very, very tough thing,” Robertson says. “It was a hard thing to work in advertising and question its role in a capitalist system potentially gone - or going - wrong, particularly since the financial crisis.”
“We’re not very nice,” she continues. “I'm not saying it's unique to the advertising industry, but you never realise how bad the materialism is until you get outside of it. You are not a better person because of your handbag, or your car, or by what your house cost.
“And the egos…oh my word. The thing that advertising folk have of telling you the cost of things they own? It's really, really bad. I see it sometimes with some bankers but I don't see it in other industries. I don't see it with clients. And you wonder why people don’t like people in the ad industry. This isn’t me saying: ‘Look how lovely I am’. It’s me saying: ‘My God, I was one of those people’.”

The famous "Cruz Commander" ad featuring Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson, who also is an owner of the Duck Commander franchise. In this funny political commercial, Robertson comes out and endorses Ted Cruz for the Republican Presidential nomination, in advance of the Iowa Caucus, and primaries in South Carolina and New Hampshire and the Super Tuesday primaries in the South. The commercial is intended to garner support among southern and rural voters who are believed to be the key audience for Phil Robertson. Robertson Stephens
Robertson Stephens (sometimes referred to as "Robbie Stephens") was a San Francisco-based boutique investment bank that focused primarily on technology companies. The firm was closed by its parent company, FleetBoston in July 2002 as a result of the collapse of the technology sector and the end of the dot-com bubble.
Robertson Stephens was among the most active investment banks in the technology sector at the height of the internet boom, underwriting 74 IPOs with a total value of $5.5 billion between 1999 and 2000. Robertson was the lead underwriter of some of the most prominent firms of the 1990s stock boom, including Switchboard, Mapquest, E-Trade and Vericity, as well as retailer Bebe. Robertson had approximately 950 employees at the time it was shuttered by FleetBoston.
In February 2013, about 10 years after closing its doors, Robertson Stephens reopened as a wealth management advisory firm at the original firm's same location in San Francisco. The new Robbie Stephens was founded by Joseph Piazza, who founded and built the wealth management business unit at the old Robertson Stephens to $40 billion in AUM and 220 employees. Joe Piazza is Chairman and CEO of Robertson Stephens LLC, which has three operating subsidiaries; Robertson Stephens Advisors LLC, Robertson Stephens Partners LLC, and Robertson Stephens Securities LLC.

One Young World
One Young World is a not-for-profit organization that gathers young leaders from around the world to develop solutions to the world’s most pressing issues.
One Young World stages annual Summits in different World Cities where delegates from charities, NGOs, corporations and universities are joined by world leaders, acting as One Young World Counsellors.
Since inception in 2009, One Young World has staged 6 Summits for a total 8,000 delegates between the ages of 18-30 from 196 countries.
The One Young World Summit 2016 will take place in Ottawa, Canada on 28 September – 1 October 2016.
Summits
Since One Young World’s founding in 2010, there have been four Summits, the first in London, England, on 8–10 February 2010. Subsequent Summits were in Zurich, Switzerland, 2011; Pittsburgh, USA, 2012; Johannesburg, South Africa, 2013. and Dublin, Ireland, 2014.
The One Young World 2015 Summit will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 18–21 November 2015. The One Young World 2016 Summit will be held in Ottawa, Canada in 2016.

Young World
Young World is a newspaper for children. It is an edition of the well-known Dawn. It has drawings and stories contributed by children with pictures too! It has reviews of books, movies, songs and websites. It also has News Update section in the end where news for children are present. There are small articles from comics like Archie etc. It has many poems written by children. It also contains a note from the editor every week. Young World is delivered only on Saturday

Today (7 December) sees The Drum launch a new video series examining the myriad reasons behind personal exits from the marketing world. Why I Left Advertising’s first subject, One Young World co-founder Kate Robertson, details her industry insights only garnered after resigning from her position as president of Havas Worldwide in 2015.
Kate Robertson unequivocally believes advertising is a young person’s game: “You leave because you get old,” she says. “The pressure, the relentless need to keep up, to keep abreast of changes and to stay fresh, and keep your mind open, and constantly come up with new ideas…the creativity that you require around process, and people, and different ways of working…being young is a really good thing.”
An early career selling radio advertising in South Africa led the co-founder of One Young World to spend the majority of her working life in Europe with shops such as J. Walter Thompson and Sholz & Friends, before climbing the ladder of Havas to become global president and UK chairman. Now, at the age of 61 and with a politically significant global conference to pull off every year, she is – quite understandably – “tired”, yet also "probably the happiest" she's ever been.
Yet Robertson cannot claim age as the sole reason for getting out of advertising. Ostensibly minor factors (the departure of her co-founder David Jones from Havas, regime change, a general shift in power in favour of the industry’s purchasing directors) may have contributed, but the fact of the matter was Robertson already had One Young World – a global forum for young leaders – on her lap.
It was Robertson’s experience of the Apartheid-era South Africa that fueled her passion for the subject. Yet she never intended One Young World to take over her life. It was only after five years that she decided to "take it really seriously" and resigned from the network in April 2015. That November she hosted the first Asia-based One Young World in Bangkok; this year she was introducing the likes of Emma Watson and Justin Tredeau on stage in Ottawa.
The charity has just moved into a new, bigger office space behind the National Gallery and the team is currently in the planning for 2017’s conference to be held in Bogotá, Colombia.
“Looking at the industry from the outside is a very, very tough thing,” Robertson says. “It was a hard thing to work in advertising and question its role in a capitalist system potentially gone - or going - wrong, particularly since the financial crisis.”
“We’re not very nice,” she continues. “I'm not saying it's unique to the advertising industry, but you never realise how bad the materialism is until you get outside of it. You are not a better person because of your handbag, or your car, or by what your house cost.
“And the egos…oh my word. The thing that advertising folk have of telling you the cost of things they own? It's really, really bad. I see it sometimes with some bankers but I don't see it in other industries. I don't see it with clients. And you wonder why people don’t like people in the ad industry. This isn’t me saying: ‘Look how lovely I am’. It’s me saying: ‘My God, I was one of those people’.”

Today (7 December) sees The Drum launch a new video series examining the myriad reasons behind personal exits from the marketing world. Why I Left Advertising’s first subject, One Young World co-founder Kate Robertson, details her industry insights only garnered after resigning from her position as president of Havas Worldwide in 2015.
Kate Robertson unequivocally believes advertising is a young person’s game: “You leave because you get old,” she says. “The pressure, the relentless need to keep up, to keep abreast of changes and to stay fresh, and keep your mind open, and constantly come up with new ideas…the creativity that you require around process, and people, and different ways of working…being young is a really good thing.”
An early career selling radio advertising in South Africa led the co-founder of One Young World to spend the majority of her working life in Europe with shops such as J. Walter Thompson and Sholz & Friends, before climbing the ladder of Havas to become global president and UK chairman. Now, at the age of 61 and with a politically significant global conference to pull off every year, she is – quite understandably – “tired”, yet also "probably the happiest" she's ever been.
Yet Robertson cannot claim age as the sole reason for getting out of advertising. Ostensibly minor factors (the departure of her co-founder David Jones from Havas, regime change, a general shift in power in favour of the industry’s purchasing directors) may have contributed, but the fact of the matter was Robertson already had One Young World – a global forum for young leaders – on her lap.
It was Robertson’s experience of the Apartheid-era South Africa that fueled her passion for the subject. Yet she never intended One Young World to take over her life. It was only after five years that she decided to "take it really seriously" and resigned from the network in April 2015. That November she hosted the first Asia-based One Young World in Bangkok; this year she was introducing the likes of Emma Watson and Justin Tredeau on stage in Ottawa.
The charity has just moved into a new, bigger office space behind the National Gallery and the team is currently in the planning for 2017’s conference to be held in Bogotá, Colombia.
“Looking at the industry from the outside is a very, very tough thing,” Robertson says. “It was a hard thing to work in advertising and question its role in a capitalist system potentially gone - or going - wrong, particularly since the financial crisis.”
“We’re not very nice,” she continues. “I'm not saying it's unique to the advertising industry, but you never realise how bad the materialism is until you get outside of it. You are not a better person because of your handbag, or your car, or by what your house cost.
“And the egos…oh my word. The thing that advertising folk have of telling you the cost of things they own? It's really, really bad. I see it sometimes with some bankers but I don't see it in other industries. I don't see it with clients. And you wonder why people don’t like people in the ad industry. This isn’t me saying: ‘Look how lovely I am’. It’s me saying: ‘My God, I was one of those people’.”
