8 Seconds

8 Seconds is a 1994 American biographical drama film directed by John G. Avildsen. Its title refers to the length of time a bull rider is required to stay on for a ride to be scored. It stars Luke Perry as American rodeo legend Lane Frost and focuses on his life and career as a bull riding champion. It also features Stephen Baldwin as Tuff Hedeman, and Red Mitchell as Cody Lambert. Notably, there is an early appearance by Renée Zellweger.

The film was completed and premiered shortly after what would have been Lane's 30th birthday, in late 1993.

Plot

While growing up in Oklahoma, young Lane Frost (Cameron Finley) learns the tricks of the bull riding trade at the hand of his father, Clyde (James Rebhorn), an accomplished rodeo bronco rider himself. As he enters his teenage and early adult years, Lane (Luke Perry) travels the western rodeo circuit with his best friends Tuff Hedeman (Stephen Baldwin) and Cody Lambert (Red Mitchell). He meets and falls in love with a young barrel racer, Kellie Kyle, and they eventually marry in 1984.

8 Seconds (soundtrack)

The album 8 Seconds is the soundtrack to the movie 8 Seconds. It was released in 1994 by MCA Records. The album peaked at no. 3 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. Four cuts from the album made the Hot Country Songs charts: McBride & the Ride's "No More Cryin'" at no. 26,David Lee Murphy's "Just Once" at no. 36, Reba McEntire's "If I Had Only Known" at no. 72, and Brooks & Dunn's "Ride 'em High, Ride 'em Low" at no. 73. Of these songs, "If I Had Only Known" previously appeared on McEntire's 1991 album For My Broken Heart, while "Just Once" later appeared on Murphy's debut album Out with a Bang. "Burnin' Up the Road", performed here by John Anderson, was previously the title track to McBride & the Ride's 1991 debut album.

Scott Neal Wilson of Country Weekly gave the soundtrack a positive review, saying that its sound would "not only appeal to country fans[…]but also to a pop-rock audience pulled in by the movie's inspirational storyline."

Lewis (lifting appliance)

A lewis (sometimes called a lewisson) is one of a category of lifting devices used by stonemasons to lift large stones into place with a crane, chain block, or winch. It is inserted into a specially prepared hole, or seating, in the top of a stone, directly above its centre of mass. It works by applying principles of the lever and utilises the weight of the stone to act on the long lever-arms which in turn results in a very high reaction force and friction where the short lever-arms make contact with the stone inside the hole and thereby prevents slipping.

Etymology

The name lewis may come from the Latin levo -avi, -atum meaning to levitate or lift, but the Oxford English Dictionary Online states, "the formation and the phonology are not easily explained on this hypothesis", preferring "origin obscure", and speculating that the term may derive from a personal name. The Romans used the lewis. The specially shaped hole that is shaped to fit the device is known as a lewis hole. Lewis holes in the uppermost masonry coursings are neatly repaired with matching indented plugs after the stone has been set in place.

Lewis (robot)

Lewis (named after Meriwether Lewis) is an autonomous robot that performs the job of a wedding photographer: it attends social events, moves around, and takes digital photographs of people. It is a research project of the Media and Machines Laboratory at Washington University.

Lewis has been featured on slashdot, on CNN's website, and in various North American newspapers.

In 2002, Lewis received -- and declined -- an invitation to Nelly's 24th birthday party.
