Calais (/ˈkæleɪ/ CAL-ay, traditionally /ˈkælᵻs/; French pronunciation: [kaˈlɛ]; Picard: Calés; Dutch: Kales) is a town and major ferry port in northern France in the department of Pas-de-Calais, of which it is a sub-prefecture. Although Calais is by far the largest city in Pas-de-Calais, the department's prefecture is its third-largest city of Arras. The population of the metropolitan area at the 2010 census was 126,395. Calais overlooks the Strait of Dover, the narrowest point in the English Channel, which is only 34 km (21 mi) wide here, and is the closest French town to England. The White Cliffs of Dover can easily be seen on a clear day from Calais. Calais is a major port for ferries between France and England, and since 1994, the Channel Tunnel has linked nearby Coquelles to Folkestone by rail.
Due to its position, Calais since the Middle Ages has been a major port and a very important centre for transport and trading with England. It was annexed by Edward III of England in 1347 and grew into a thriving centre for wool production. Calais was a territorial possession of England until its capture by France in 1558. The town came to be called the "brightest jewel in the English crown" owing to its great importance as the gateway for the tin, lead, lace and wool trades (or "staples"). In 1805 it was a staging area for Napoleon's troops for several months during his planned invasion of the United Kingdom. The town was virtually razed to the ground during World War II, when in May 1940, it was a strategic bombing target of the invading German forces who took the town during the Siege of Calais. During World War II, the Germans built massive bunkers along the coast in preparation for launching missiles on England.
France (French: [fʁɑ̃s]), officially the French Republic (French: République française [ʁepyblik fʁɑ̃sɛz]), is a sovereign state comprising territory in western Europe and several overseas regions and territories. The European part of France, called metropolitan France, extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. France spans 643,801 square kilometres (248,573 sq mi) and has a total population of 66.6 million. It is a unitary semi-presidential republic with the capital in Paris, the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial centre. The Constitution of France establishes the state as secular and democratic, with its sovereignty derived from the people.
During the Iron Age, what is now Metropolitan France was inhabited by the Gauls, a Celtic people. The Gauls were conquered in 51 BC by the Roman Empire, which held Gaul until 486. The Gallo-Romans faced raids and migration from the Germanic Franks, who dominated the region for hundreds of years, eventually creating the medieval Kingdom of France. France emerged as a major European power in the Late Middle Ages, with its victory in the Hundred Years' War (1337 to 1453) strengthening French state-building and paving the way for a future centralized absolute monarchy. During the Renaissance, France experienced a vast cultural development and established the beginning of a global colonial empire. The 16th century was dominated by religious civil wars between Catholics and Protestants (Huguenots).
Lily Rose Beatrice Cooper (née Allen; born 2 May 1985), known professionally as Lily Allen, is an English singer, songwriter, actress, and television presenter. She is the daughter of Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen. Allen left school when she was 15 and concentrated on improving her performing and compositional skills. In 2005, she made some of her recordings public on Myspace and the publicity resulted in airplay on BBC Radio 1 and a contract with Regal Recordings.
Her first mainstream single, "Smile", reached number one on the UK Singles Chart in July 2006. Her debut record, Alright, Still, was well received, selling over 2.6 million copies worldwide and brought Allen a nomination at the Grammy Awards, Brit Awards and MTV Video Music Awards. She began hosting her own talk-show, Lily Allen and Friends, on BBC Three.
Her second studio album, It's Not Me, It's You, saw a genre shift, having more of an electropop feel, rather than the ska and reggae influences of the first one. The album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and the Australian ARIA Charts and was well received by critics, noting the singer's musical evolution and maturity. It spawned the hit singles "The Fear" and "Fuck You". This success saw her receive the Brit Award for British Female Solo Artist at the 2010 Brit Awards. Allen and Amy Winehouse were credited with starting a process that led to the "year of the women" media label in 2009 that saw five female artists making music of "experimentalism and fearlessness" nominated for the Mercury Prize.

The Calais ‘jungle’ camp is due for demolition - which is likely to start as early as next week. This week the Home Secretary vowed to speed up plans to resettle hundreds of vulnerable children from the camp after talks with France. Charities have been stepping up their pressure on the UK government - they say there are a thousand children in the camp unaccompanied - and demolition will mean children go missing. The singer Lily Allen has been to meet children living in the jungle, those waiting to come here. Our reporter Catrin Nye went with her exclusively for this programme. Migrants or so-called "refugees" in Calais show their true nature. They attack, harass and board trucks / trailers on their way to the U.K. I also make some comparisons to the Refugees Are Welcome Here movement. French officials and hospital staff confirmed that migrants are deliberately causing accidents to create traffic tailbacks on the N216 motorway into the ferry port, and the A16 to the Channel Tunnel. They are also putting up barricades. Quentin Patte, an emergency doctor at Calais Hospital, told The Mail on Sunday: 'Targeting motorists in order to cause accidents is a new tactic. A colleague treated someone recently who was injured when a migrant threw something at their vehicle near the port.' Another doctor at the hospital revealed migrants come into the hospital daily after being wounded in vicious knife fights in the camp. He said: 'They come in every day with stab wounds. There is particularly a rivalry between the Afghans and the Sudanese. They are given priority because their wo...

It was a very quiet late Friday afternoon crossing in my Motorhome so I decided to keep my Dash-Cam footage and make this "drive through" to help anyone who is wondering what the process of getting on the train is. As I was in a Motorhome, the boarding was into a large single decker carriage. Cars without roofboxes or roof racks are usually placed in double decker carriages, however, the boarding process is exactly the same. As mentioned at the end of the video, Calais is similar but slightly different so watch until the end for the subtle differences.

Several child migrants posed for selfies today as they prepared to say 'au revoir' to France and board Eurostar trains bringing them to Britain.A small group of under-age migrants left the Calais for Britain as the British and French governments continue to negotiate about should happen to up to 1,000 unaccompanied children who are living in the slum-like camp known as 'The Jungle', which is due to close down within weeks. Six children gathered in Calais this morning before boarding a Eurostar train, accompanied by volunteers and French officials.
Children in Calais Jungle to arrive in UK 'in days' British and French officials have begun registering unaccompanied children in the Calais "Jungle" who are hoping to join relatives in Britain. A significant number of child refugees will arrive in the UK from the migrant camp within days, the BBC understands. Officials have been focusing first on unaccompanied minors who have the right to join relatives under EU legislation. A separate registration process will take place for vulnerable children who do not have family in the UK. Under EU-wide regulation, asylum claims must be made in the first safe country a person reaches, but children can have their claim transferred to another country if they have family members living there. The Dubs Amendment to the Immigration Act, originally put f...
