Afghanistan i/æfˈɡænᵻstæn/ (Pashto/Dari: افغانستان, Afġānistān), officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country located within South Asia and Central Asia. It has a population of approximately 32 million, making it the 42nd most populous country in the world. It is bordered by Pakistan in the south and east; Iran in the west; Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan in the north; and China in the far northeast. Its territory covers 652,000 km2 (252,000 sq mi), making it the 41st largest country in the world.
Human habitation in Afghanistan dates back to the Middle Paleolithic Era, and the country's strategic location along the Silk Road connected it to the cultures of the Middle East and other parts of Asia. Through the ages the land has been home to various peoples and witnessed numerous military campaigns; notably by Alexander the Great, Muslim Arabs, Mongols, British, Soviet Russians, and in the modern-era by Western powers. The land also served as the source from which the Kushans, Hephthalites, Samanids, Saffarids, Ghaznavids, Ghorids, Khiljis, Mughals, Hotaks, Durranis, and others have risen to form major empires.

A world away from the perfect fairways of the pro golf tour, Colin Montgomerie gave a master class in one of the world's unlikeliest driving ranges. For over an hour he gave personal coaching to forces golf fans spread out across the windswept dust of Camp Bastion, Britain's massive supply base in Afghanistan. As he expertly drove ball-after-ball onto targets borrowed from the rifle ranges, he joked how helicopter gunships low overhead might cramp his drive. The Ryder Cup-winning captain spent four days in Afghanistan between international tournaments, boosting morale and equipping Bastion's very first Golf course, with thousands of pounds worth of donated equipment. The war in Afghanistan is the period in which the United States invaded the country after the September 11 attacks, supported initially by close allies, and eventually by the wider North Atlantic Treaty Organization, beginning in 2003. The conflict is also known as the U.S. war in Afghanistan. It followed the Afghan Civil War's 1996–2001 phase. Its public aims were to dismantle al-Qaeda, and to deny it a safe base of operations in Afghanistan by removing the Taliban from power. Key allies supported the U.S. from the start, including the United Kingdom. In August 2003, NATO became involved as an alliance, taking the helm of the International Security Assistance Force. On 28 December 2014, NATO formally ended combat operations in Afghanistan and transferred full security responsibility to th...

The culture of Afghanistan reflects its ancient roots and position as a crossroads for invading ethnic groups and traditions. Little the Afghans make is unattractive; even common grain bags to carry produce to market are often embroidered to make them more beautiful. A camel caravan of nomads often looks like a circus parade, with the animals decked out in woven finery. The Islamic traditions of fine calligraphy and graphic arts are evoked in the fine filigreed flourishes that decorate many buildings. Poetry and poets are revered. Although the people of Afghanistan may have been sorely stressed by centuries of warfare and a difficult environment, their arts have prospered nonetheless. Afghanistan which is called the crossroad of Central Asia has a history over 5.000 years but it has been...

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, 5 February 2009 A child's first right is the right to life. But in today's Afghanistan, children face some of the most difficult challenges to their survival in the world. The kind of health care that many of us take for granted is out of reach to hundreds of thousands of Afghans, and pregnant women and children are among the most vulnerable. Great distances, towering mountains and other natural barriers prevent many people from being able to reach a clinic or hospital in a larger town. The remoteness of many communities, combined by grinding poverty and limited social services, are factors that also hinder the recruitment of qualified health staff to work in such isolated locations. But several initiatives are helping to remedy such ills. Powered by horses and donkeys, mobile medical teams are now trudging up dusty, narrow mountain paths to remote villages where they dispense essential health services to thousands of people, such as vaccinations an...

“First tell us what you did in Afghanistan all those years. Then we'll decide whether or not we can shake hands,” said Gennady-Nikmamat's fellow soldiers after he had been assumed to be a traitor and disappeared for 29 years. This is the unique story of Gennady-Nikmamat, a former Soviet soldier who was captured by the Mujahideen during the Soviet war in Afghanistan. He was presumed a turncoat, which carried a criminal penalty if he ever returned to his homeland. Thus he had no choice but to stay in Afghanistan and adopt a Muslim way of life. Fifteen years after the fall of the Taliban, women in Afghanistan continue to suffer oppression and abuse. This time, closer to home. Almost nine out of 10 Afghan women face physical, sexual or psychological violence, or are forced into marriage. In the majority of cases the abuse is committed by the people they love and trust the most – their families. Unable to escape their circumstances, some are turning to drastic measures like suicide to end their suffering.
