Balsac the Jaws of Death is the rhythm guitarist in the rock band Gwar. He appears as a humanoid creature with a face resembling a bear-trap. Balsac is usually portrayed wielding a giant battleaxe. In contrast to the other bandmates, Balsac speaks with a pretentious British accent until Lust in Space, where he speaks with an American accent during an argument with Oderus Urungus on the track "Where Is Zog?", though he also speaks without an accent during the argument in "Have You Seen Me?" from The Road Behind EP.
In the original Gwar lineup in 1985, Jaws of Death and BalSac (pronounced Ball Sick) were two separate characters. Jaws of Death (played by Death Piggy guitarist Steve Douglas) wore a crude version of the familiar animal trap face, while BalSac (Chris Bopst) played bass and wore a simple open-face piece of spiked headgear. After several lineup changes, Douglas would return to the band as Balsac the Jaws of Death for the recording of Gwar's first album Hell-O, only to be replaced by Michael Derks shortly after.
Gwar, often styled as GWAR, is an American heavy metal band formed in Richmond, Virginia, United States, in 1984, composed of and operated by a frequently rotating line-up of musicians, artists and filmmakers collectively known as Slave Pit Inc.
Easily identified by their distinctively grotesque costumes, Gwar's core thematic and visual concept revolves around an elaborate science fiction-themed mythology which portrays the band members as barbaric interplanetary warriors, a narrative which serves as the basis for all of the band's albums, videos, live shows and other media. Rife with over-the-top violent, sexual, and scatological humour typically incorporating social and political satire, Gwar have attracted both acclaim and controversy for their music and stage shows, the latter of which notoriously showcase enactments of graphic violence that result in the audience being sprayed with copious amounts of fake blood. Such stagecraft regularly leads Gwar to be labeled a "shock rock" band by the media.
A death mask is a wax or plaster cast made of a person’s face following death. Death masks may be mementos of the dead, or be used for creation of portraits. It is sometimes possible to identify portraits that have been painted from death masks, because of the characteristic slight distortions of the features caused by the weight of the plaster during the making of the mold. In other cultures a death mask may be a clay or another artifact placed on the face of the deceased before burial rites. The best known of these are the masks used by ancient Egyptians as part of the mummification process, such as Tutankhamun's mask.
In the 10th century in some European countries, it was common for death masks to be used as part of the effigy of the deceased, displayed at state funerals. During the 18th and 19th centuries they were also used to permanently record the features of unknown corpses for purposes of identification. This function was later replaced by photography.
In the cases of people whose faces were damaged by their death, it was common to take casts of their hands. An example of this occurred in the case of Thomas D'Arcy McGee, the Canadian statesman whose face was shattered by the bullet which assassinated him in 1868.
Mike Derks (born April 20, 1962) is a former Canadian Football League offensive lineman and Grey Cup champion. A native of Sudbury, Ontario, after playing for the Cincinnati Bearcats he joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for 6 seasons, winning the championship in 1986.

Article and photos: http://bit.ly/DFA1979RR Premier Guitar was allowed an in-depth look at the touring rig of Jesse Keeler, the bass player in Death From Above 1979. Keeler has inspired a devout following of bass players to take on a new role in punk, and his unique approach to gear has helped solidify DFA’s sound and propel them into cult status. After being a longtime Rickenbacker user, Keeler is now very comfortable with a ’69 Dan Armstrong. He likes the short scale, 24-fret design, which better suits his playing style and approach than anything he’s ever played. A ’71 tags along as a backup, and the only mod is a “permanent” bridge to keep his intonation constant. Keeler also utilizes a vintage JUNO-60 keyboard which runs through his rig as well. Beneath the northern lights we ride
The dark lord will guide us
Torches held high
We will kill everything living
There's nowhere to run
The smell of death filling the air harvest begun
Legions
Of death
On a quest
We are obsessed
Legions
Of death
We are
Obsessed with death
Blood is raining from the skies
Red painted corpses the dead will arise
Infected with hatred and strength: some in denial
The smell of death fills the air: slay your ritual
Legions
Of death
On a quest
We are obsessed
Legions
Of death
We are
Obsessed with death
Beneath the northern lights we ride
The oceans have frozen, nothing alive
We will forever patrol, we won't rest
We are the legions of death on our quest
Legions
Of death
On a quest
We are obsessed
Legions
Of death
