Billie Lea Harris fights for her life following horror crash

“YOU still have your whole life to live.”

This is the grieving plea of friends and family of a 15-year-old girl who made a fateful mistake of not wearing a seatbelt in a car an unlicensed teen was driving.

Billie Lea Harris was a passenger in the unregistered 1995 Holden Commodore, which Luke Lee slammed into a tree in Sunshine West, about 15km from Melbourne’s CBD, late on Monday night.

He was killed and Billie was rushed to hospital with another girl and two boys, who were all passengers in the car.

This one decision will change Billie’s life forever and it will be a long and painful road ahead to recovery if she wakes up.

A Facebook page has been created to leave her messages of love, hope and support.

Her father Brett Penrose said Billie was still critical in intensive care.

She has 23 broken bones, eight fractures to her face, is missing part of her skull and has bleeding on the brain.

Luke’s mother Paula Pettiford this week urged teens not to make “stupid” decisions and begged her son not to go out the night he died.

She told the Herald Sun she asked Luke “what happens if you die?” and like any teen who believes they’re invincible, he said “I won’t, I won’t”.

There has been an outpouring of grief for Luke this week but Billie still lays in a hospital bed, her fate still undecided.

Mr Penrose said she was his world and none of her family was giving up on her.

“It’s time to fight back baby girl we need you, mum and me, you are my daughter, I will never give up on you I love you,” Mr Penrose wrote on Facebook.

Billie’s aunty, Melissa Ford, said her eyes watered every time she thought of her niece.

“No words can explain how hard it is to see my beautiful niece in such a way,” she wrote on Facebook.

“Baby girl u are loved by so many and u need to be strong and pull through (sic).

“Arty (sic) Mel will get u out of being grounded.”

Her mother Kristy Penrose said she was sitting by her daughter’s side, telling her to fight with everything she’s got.

“There are so many people out here in shock that you are lying in here fighting when you should be here laughing and being a s***head like you are,” she wrote.

“I know how strong you are, how stubbin (sic) you are.

“Please I beg, I pray, I’ve spoken to God, everyone, to help you come home. I miss you wont (sic) to hear your voice.”

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer warned other drivers following the horror crash.

“Driving is not a game. You need to be licensed. You need to be responsible,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

Investigators believe inexperience and speed were factors in the crash.

Friends of Luke have paid tribute to the lost teen including his girlfriend who regrets their last words were spoken in anger.

“No words could ever explain how much you really mean to me and how much I will miss you and forever love you, we’ve been through so much together and I’m so upset that our last words to each other was us fighting,” she posted on Instagram.

This tragedy should be a wake-up call for other teens, but less than a day after the crash three unlicensed teens were arrested following a police pursuit through Victoria.

Two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old were arrested on Tuesday afternoon after a chase on roads between Geelong and Melbourne, involving two stolen cars, police said on Wednesday.

Flowers and notes have been placed at the crash site and police were expected to continue their investigations into the crash and were interviewing witnesses.
