Bagram Airfield, also known as Bagram Air Base, (IATA: OAI, ICAO: OAIX) is the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan. It is located next to the ancient city of Bagram, 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) southeast of Charikar in the Parwan Province of Afghanistan. The airfield features a dual runway capable of handling any size military aircraft, including Lockheed Martin C-5 Galaxy and Antonov An-225. The base is mainly occupied by Government contractors, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and minimally by the United States Armed Forces.
Bagram Airfield is currently maintained by the Combined Joint Task Force 10th Mountain Division (CJTF-10), having taken over from the 101st Airborne Division in the winter of 2013. It is also maintained by 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade (Task Force Pale Horse) and 3-10 GSAB (Task Force Phoenix) of the U.S. Army, with the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing of the U.S. Air Force and other U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, and ISAF units having sizable tenant populations. In addition, the U.S. government regional platform for the east is at the base, staffed by civilians.
Bagram (بگرام Bagrām), founded as Alexandria on the Caucasus and known in medieval times as Kapisa, is a small town and seat in Bagram District in Parwan Province of Afghanistan, about 60 kilometers north of the capital Kabul. It is the site of an ancient city located at the junction of the Ghorband and Panjshir Valley, near today's city of Charikar, Afghanistan.
The location of this historical town made it a key passage from Ancient India along the Silk Road, leading westwards through the mountains towards Bamiyan.
It is unknown when the site was originally settled. In the mid 6th century BC, Cyrus the Great of the Persian Achaemenid Dynasty destroyed the city as part of his campaign against the Saka nomads in the region. The town, however, was soon rebuilt by his successor Darius I.
In the 320s BC, Alexander the Great captured the city and established a fortified colony named Alexandria of the Caucasus. The new town, laid out in the "hippodamian plan" or iron-grid pattern—a hallmark of Greek city planning, had brick walls reinforced with towers at the angles. The central street was bordered with shops and workshops.

A civilian cargo aircraft crashed at Bagram Air Field near the Afghan capital Kabul on Monday, killing all seven people aboard. The plane came down shortly after take-off and crashed within the boundaries of the US-run airbase, a NATO spokesperson at the base said. The Taliban quickly claimed responsibility for the crash, but the coalition dismissed the claim as "false" in a statement to AP. The cause of the crash is being investigated by emergency crews, but no sign of insurgent activity in the area was spotted at the time, the statement added. KABUL — A clearer picture has emerged as to how a Taliban attacker on a motorcycle was able to kill six U.S. troops outside Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan on Monday, CNN reported. The suicide bomber was able to pass through an initial perimeter of Afghan security because the explosives, which contained small metal balls, were packed inside his motorcycle, hiding them from Afghan security. The six U.S. troops, all members of the Air Force or Air National Guard, were on a security patrol outside Bagram Airfield, walking in a narrow lane surrounded by walls, when the suicide bomber approached them and detonated the explosives. This was the deadliest attack on foreign troops in Afghanistan since August this year. The Taliban claimed responsibility in a message posted on Twitter, the New Yo...

Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe The US military has told Al Jazeera that it is negotiating with foreign governments to take non-Afghan prisoners from its controversial prison at the Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan. Several Afghan detainees have already been released ahead of the prison's transfer to Afghan control due at the end of this year. Two inmates were killed there while being interrogated in 2002, and other former inmates have claimed they were abused and tortured. Al Jazeera's James Bays reports. At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.' Reaching more than 270 million households in over ...
It's really tragic. Apparently it had five heavy military vehicles in it and some broke loose (probably at first one which then knocked another free in a cascade), rolled back and unbalanced the center of gravity, causing the nose to pitch up and the aircraft to stall. I worked for a time in air cargo loading, although we were working with standard cargo containers rather than 5 armored cars. The load balance is very critical, it had to computed and then adhered to exactly while loading, also the containers are locked down very securely. In this case the tie downs failed.

The number of prisoners, many of whom are believed to be Taliban members, in the US dentention centre in the Afghan city of Bagram has risen by 40 per cent since the beginning of the year. The increase of detainees came as US troops recently poured into the country in an effort to boost military operations. James Bays reports from Kabul, the Afghan capital. [December 6, 2010]

About The Video : Neptune is tasked to secure Bagram Airfield with a contingent from the Northern Alliance. By March 2002, the airfield is re-purposed as a forward operating base by NATO forces. U.S. Army Colonel R. Drucker, codename Jimmy, commands all local assets, is shown as a cautious, competent officer, in contrast to his commanding officer, General Flagg, who works in an office in the United States and is ignorant of the AFO teams' role in the operation. While Drucker plans to use Tier 1 operatives to reconnoiter insurgent positions in the valley and Northern Alliance soldiers to eliminate them, Flagg is mistrusting of the locals and gives the Colonel a 24-hour deadline to deploy the 10th Mountain Division, the 101st Airborne Division, and U.S. Army Rangers.
