Presents statistics on deaths and mortality for Australia, states and territories. Information on characteristics of the deceased include place of usual residence, age at death, sex, Indigenous status and country of birth. Information is also provided on infant deaths and death rates.Death statistics are used as an input into the calculation of quarterly population estimates. Death statistics are also used in the analysis of mortality in Australia. Trends in mortality are used in the development of assumptions on future levels of mortality for population projections.

Australian mortality information is released annually. For further information, refer to the Past & Future Releases tab of this release.

This dataset refers to calendar years commencing from 2001.

This dataset contains data presented at state, territory and Australia level. Further disaggregation for selected data at lower levels of geography are available from the downloads tab.

Estimated Resident Population (ERP) includes all usual residents of Australia at 30 June. For further information on ERP, refer to the Explanatory Notes tab - Glossary.ERP is subject to revisions which affect rates, primarily for the two most recent years. For information on ERP revisions, refer to the Summary tab - In This Issue.For further information on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, refer to Estimates and Projections, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, 2001 to 2026 (cat. no. 3238.0).Non-Indigenous population is derived by subtracting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander estimates/projections from Estimated Resident Population.

Deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Persons are aggregated from deaths identified as Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, or both on the death registration form.Rates based on three year averages - For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander data, rates are calculated for each calendar year and then averaged to reduce variability in annual rates.Data is reported individually by jurisdiction of usual residence for New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory only. These four states and the Northern Territory have been included due to there being evidence of sufficient levels of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identification and sufficient numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander deaths to support mortality analysis. Total five state/territory combines data for these five jurisdictions.Age not stated in rate calculations - For standardised death rates and age-specific death rates age not stated has been prorated across single years and age groups.Australia - Includes Other Territories.

Death records with Sex not stated are imputed to be either Male or Female.

Confidentiality - Where necessary, tables in this dataset have had small values randomised to protect confidentiality. As a result, sums of components may not add exactly to totals. Cells with 0 values have not been affected by randomisation. These very minor adjustments allow for a greater amount of data to be released, and do not affect the utility of the data. Accordingly, the ABS does not recommend summing small cells together to aggregate data.Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Statistics - Identification of Indigenous status varies across states/territories, datasets and over time.
