Robert Pete Williams (Mar 14, 1914 – Dec 31, 1980) was an American Louisiana blues musician. His music characteristically employed unconventional structures and tunings, and his songs are often about the time he served in prison. His song "I've Grown So Ugly" has been covered by Captain Beefheart, on his album Safe as Milk (1967), and by The Black Keys, on Rubber Factory (2004). - Williams was born in Zachary, Louisiana, to a family of sharecroppers. He had no formal schooling, and spent his childhood picking cotton and cutting sugar cane. In 1928, he moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana and worked in a lumberyard. At the age of 20, Williams fashioned a crude guitar by attaching five copper strings to a cigar box and soon after bought a cheap, mass-produced one. Williams was taught by Frank and Robert Metty, and was at first chiefly influenced by Peetie Wheatstraw and Blind Lemon Jefferson. He began to play for small events such as Church gatherings, fish fries, suppers, and dances. From the 1930s to the 1950s, Williams played music and continued to work in the lumberyards of Baton Rouge. He was discovered by ethnomusicologists Dr Harry Oster and Richard Allen in Louisiana State Penitentiary, where he was serving a life sentence for fatally shooting a man in a nightclub in 1956, an act which he claimed was in self-defense. Oster and Allen recorded Williams performing several of his songs about prison life, and pleaded for him to be pardoned. Under pressure from Oster, the parole board issued a pardon, and commuted his sentence to 12 years. In December 1958, he was released into 'servitude parole', which required 80 hours of labor per week on a Denham Springs farm without due compensation, and only room and board provided. This parole prevented him from working in music, though he was able to occasionally play with Willie B. Thomas and Butch Cage at Thomas's home in Zachary. By this time, Williams' music was becoming popular, and he played at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival. By 1965, he was able to tour the country, traveling to Los Angeles, Massachusetts, Chicago and Berkeley, California. In 1966 he also toured Europe. In 1968 he settled in Maringouin, west of Baton Rouge and began to work outside of music. In 1970, Williams began to perform once again, touring blues and folk festivals throughout the United States and Europe. His music has appeared in several films notably, the Roots of American Music; Country and Urban Music (1971); Out of the Blues into the Blacks (1972) and Blues Under the Skin (1972) the last two being French-made films. His most popular recordings included "Prisoner's Talking Blues" and "Pardon Denied Again". Williams has been inducted into the Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame. "Medicine man" or "medicine woman" are English terms used to describe traditional healers and spiritual leaders among Native American and other indigenous or aboriginal peoples. Anthropologists tend to prefer the term "shaman," a specific term for a spiritual mediator from the Tungusic peoples of Siberia.
The primary function of these "medicine elders" (who are not always male) is to secure the help of the spirit world, including the Great Spirit (Wakan Tanka in the language of the Lakota Sioux), for the benefit of the entire community.
Sometimes the help sought may be for the sake of healing disease, sometimes it may be for the sake of healing the psyche, sometimes the goal is to promote harmony between human groups or between humans & nature. So the term "medicine man/woman" is not entirely inappropriate, but it greatly oversimplifies and also skews the depiction of the people whose role in society complements that of the chief. These people are not the Native American equivalent of the Chinese "barefoot doctors", herbalists, nor of the emergency medical technicians who ride rescue vehicles.

Robert Pete Williams (Mar 14, 1914 – Dec 31, 1980) was an American Louisiana blues musician. His music characteristically employed unconventional structures and tunings, and his songs are often about the time he served in prison. His song "I've Grown So Ugly" has been covered by Captain Beefheart, on his album Safe as Milk (1967), and by The Black Keys, on Rubber Factory (2004). - Williams was born in Zachary, Louisiana, to a family of sharecroppers. He had no formal schooling, and spent his childhood picking cotton and cutting sugar cane. In 1928, he moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana and worked in a lumberyard. At the age of 20, Williams fashioned a crude guitar by attaching five copper strings to a cigar box and soon after bought a cheap, mass-produced one. Williams was taught by Frank and Robert Metty, and was at first chiefly influenced by Peetie Wheatstraw and Blind Lemon Jefferson. He began to play for small events such as Church gatherings, fish fries, suppers, and dances. From the 1930s to the 1950s, Williams played music and continued to work in the lumberyards of Baton Rouge. He was discovered by ethnomusicologists Dr Harry Oster and Richard Allen in Louisiana State Penitentiary, where he was serving a life sentence for fatally shooting a man in a nightclub in 1956, an act which he claimed was in self-defense. Oster and Allen recorded Williams performing several of his songs about prison life, and pleaded for him to be pardoned. Under pressure from Oster, the parole board issued a pardon, and commuted his sentence to 12 years. In December 1958, he was released into 'servitude parole', which required 80 hours of labor per week on a Denham Springs farm without due compensation, and only room and board provided. This parole prevented him from working in music, though he was able to occasionally play with Willie B. Thomas and Butch Cage at Thomas's home in Zachary. By this time, Williams' music was becoming popular, and he played at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival. By 1965, he was able to tour the country, traveling to Los Angeles, Massachusetts, Chicago and Berkeley, California. In 1966 he also toured Europe. In 1968 he settled in Maringouin, west of Baton Rouge and began to work outside of music. In 1970, Williams began to perform once again, touring blues and folk festivals throughout the United States and Europe. In Sidney Has No Horses the filmmakers found an authentic, genuine, yet complicated, medicine man. We went to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation with the intension of producing a short educational interview. I personally went to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation without expectations, knowing nothing about the man or his ceremonies. What we found was interesting enough to sideline a documentary about deep field work in Antarctica. But honestly, we could just as easily found a drunk, con-man, or other delusional human maintaining a flawed or childish world-view. -

In Sidney Has No Horses the filmmakers found an authentic, genuine, yet complicated, medicine man. We went to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation with the intension of producing a short educational interview.
I personally went to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation without expectations, knowing nothing about the man or his ceremonies.
What we found was interesting enough to sideline a documentary about deep field work in Antarctica. But honestly, we could just as easily found a drunk, con-man, or other delusional human maintaining a flawed or childish world-view.

Pete Williams: The product of a troubled childhood, Pete was addicted to drugs by the time he was a teenager. He dried out long enough to do a stint in the US Military and managed to stay straight and sober for three years. But the addictions proved too powerful, and the urge for more drugs drove him to crime. Pete was stealing drugs from multiple drugs stores in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. In 1986, while serving time in a Mississippi prison, Pete had a radical transformation through and encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ. Exactly ten years later, to the day, with two 105-year sentences stacked against him (life without parole), Pete was released from prison by the miracle power of God. After his release, all charges against him were dropped. -

Pete Williams gets you Obstacle Fit, Paddle Fit! INTERVIEW
Ever since my friend, sportswriter Pete Williams met professional fitness trainer Mark Verstegen and co-authored a series of Core Performance titles, it's been man overboard for Mr. Media. My training regimen consists of getting up every morning, walking to the kitchen, taking a bunch of vitamins, walking the dog for 20 minutes and then walking to my desk. Pete, on the other hand, has moved on to marathons, triathlons and Iron Man competitions. He wrote a vook called Paddle Fit and I actually went out into the waters of Tampa Bay to videotape our last interview. And I'm not much of a water bird. How I make an aluminium motorcycle petrol tank (gas tank) & other alloy metalwork.
Full length video of how I make an alloy petrol tank and other sheet metal work including panel-beating & oxy-acetylene welding. Excuse abrupt edits. Other tips:- always use a mask when welding to protect from fumes. Use a lint-free cloth for polishing. Make sure tank is rubber-mounted to prevent fatigue cracks. A large tank may need baffles. When tapping the little low-spots when panel-beating, there is no need to rest it against the block; that was only so the camera could see it. Hope this is of interest and help to the DIYer. Pete Williams: The product of a troubled childhood, Pete was addicted to drugs by the time he was a teenager. He dried out long enough to do a stint in the US Military and managed to stay straight and sober for three years. But the addictions proved too powerful, and the urge for more drugs drove him to crime. Pete was stealing drugs from multiple drugs stores in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.
In 1986, while serving time in a Mississippi prison, Pete had a radical transformation through and encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Exactly ten years later, to the day, with two 105-year sentences stacked against him (life without parole), Pete was released from prison by the miracle power of God. After his release, all charges against him were dropped.

The authorship of the first four books of the New Testament has fascinated scholars for centuries. If the authors were eyewitnesses, one could assume greater reliability. If not, then questions are naturally raised about the historicity of details in the writings. Because the first three Gospels are so similar, many theories have been proposed and argued to explain the sources of verbatim sections, as well as the unique material. Did Mark rely on Peter for eyewitness details? Luke admits his use of other sources, but did he use Mark or Matthew or both? What about Matthew and John? New evidence in the discussion of these questions and more will be the focus of this lecture.
Dr. Peter Williams. is a biblical scholar and also the Director of Tyndale House, Cambridge.

This summer the Translation Oversight Committee of the English Standard Version (ESV) met at Tyndale House in Cambridge, England to consider improvements in certain specific English word choices. For example, should the Hebrew word 'ebed and the Greek word doulos be translated "slave," "bondservant" or "servant"? The question involved lexicography, biblical theology, and both ancient and modern culture.
During deliberations, the BBC stopped by and filmed a segment, which they reduced to a four-minute clip--reflecting hours of discussion based on hundreds of hours of scholarly research. Speaking in the video are C. John Collins (Covenant Theological Seminary), Peter Williams (Senior Warden of Tyndale House, Cambridge, and a past and future presenter in the Lanier Theological Library Lecture Series), Gordon Wenham (Trinity College, Bristol; son of the late John Wenham of Oxford, who contributed the Foreword to the second edition of The Fire That Consumes), Paul House (Beeson Divinity School), Wayne Grudem (Phoenix Seminary), and Lane Dennis (Crossway Books & Bibles).
