1990 (MCMXC) was a common year starting on Monday (dominical letter G) of the Gregorian calendar, the 1990th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 990th year of the 2nd millennium, the 90th year of the 20th century, and the 1st year of the 1990s decade.
Important events of 1990 include the Reunification of Germany and Yemeni unification, the formal beginning of the Human Genome Project (finished in 2003), the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope, the separation of Namibia from South Africa, and the Baltic states declaring independence from the Soviet Union amidst Perestroika. Yugoslavia's communist regime collapses amidst increasing internal tensions and multiparty elections held within its constituent republics result in separatist governments being elected in most of the republics marking the beginning of the breakup of Yugoslavia. Also in this year began the crisis that would lead to the Gulf War in 1991 following the Iraqi invasion and the largely internationally unrecognized annexation of Kuwait resulting in a crisis in the Persian Gulf involving the issue of the sovereignty of Kuwait and fears by Saudi Arabia over Iraqi aggression against their oil fields near Kuwait, this resulted in Operation Desert Shield being enacted with an international coalition of military forces being built up on the Kuwaiti-Saudi border with demands for Iraq to peacefully withdraw from Kuwait. Also in this year, Nelson Mandela was released from prison, and Margaret Thatcher resigned as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after over 11 years.
The Royal Army Service Corps (RASC) was a corps of the British Army responsible for land, coastal and lake transport, air despatch, barracks administration, the Army Fire Service, staffing headquarters' units, supply of food, water, fuel and domestic materials such as clothing, furniture and stationery and the supply of technical and military equipment. It became a "Forming Corps" of the Royal Logistic Corps.
For centuries, army transport was operated by contracted civilians. The first uniformed transport corps in the British Army was the Royal Waggoners formed in 1794. It was not a success and was disbanded the following year. In 1799, the Royal Waggon Corps was formed; by August 1802, it had been renamed the Royal Waggon Train. This was reduced to only two troops in 1818 and finally disbanded in 1833.
A transport corps was not formed again until the Crimean War. In 1855, the Land Transport Corps was formed. This was renamed the Military Train the following year.
The Home Office (HO) is a ministerial department of the Her Majesty's Government, responsible for immigration, security, and law and order. As such it is responsible for the police, British Visas and Immigration, and the Security Service (MI5). It is also in charge of government policy on security-related issues such as drugs, counter-terrorism, and ID cards. It was formerly responsible for Her Majesty's Prison Service and Probation Service, but these have transferred to the Ministry of Justice.
It continues to be known, especially in official papers and when referred to in Parliament, as the Home Department.
The Home Office is headed by the Home Secretary, a Cabinet minister supported by the senior civil servant, the Permanent Secretary.
As of October 2014, the Home Office comprised the following organisations:
Edward Albert Arthur Woodward, OBE (1 June 1930 – 16 November 2009) was an English actor and singer.
After graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), Woodward began his career on stage. Throughout his career, he appeared in productions in both the West End of London and on Broadway in New York City. He came to wider attention from 1967 in the title role of the British television spy drama Callan, earning him the 1970 British Academy Television Award for Best Actor.
Woodward starred as Police Sergeant Neil Howie in the 1973 cult British horror film The Wicker Man, and in the title role of the 1980 Australian biopic Breaker Morant. From 1985 to 1989, Woodward starred as British ex-secret agent and vigilante Robert McCall in the American television series The Equalizer, earning him the 1986 Golden Globe Award for Best Television Drama Actor.
Woodward was born in Croydon, Surrey, the only child of working class parents Edward Oliver Woodward, a metalworker, and Violet Edith Woodward (née Smith). As a boy, he was bombed out of his home three times during the Blitz. He attended Eccleston Road, Sydenham Road, and E Wallington, as well as Kingston Day Commercial School, all in Surrey. He then attended Kingston College.

A nightmare vision of the (then) future UK set in 1990. The permanent civil service in Britain has taken political control and the population finds itself living under a totalitarian regime. The Public Control Department (PCD) of the Home Office monitors all activity, and ruthlessly suppresses any act of opposition. The story focuses on two key players -- the supercilious Permanent Secretary at the PCD, Herbert Skardon (Robert Lang) and a journalist on Britain's last independent newspaper, Jim Kyle (Edward Woodward). Kyle has been arrested by the police. The Police Commissioner, with his own agenda, debates whether to hand Kyle over to the PCD.

Eleventh episode of "1990", a 1977 BBC production starring Edward Woodward. This is a not-for-profit posting, please contact me if you have a copyright issue with me sharing it. I've posted this series since I had great trouble finding it. It is set in an Orwellian near-future. Hope you enjoy it. Not much description as google seem to take delight in wiping channels with no recourse. Too much work to start again so I'm just uploading the rarer & more critical stuff. Hi to all my YT pals. I do not claim any rights yada yada yada BBC yada yada yada.

They don't know me,
Me for who I'm not,
Wait until the clock strikes,
To make a break for it.
And those who came before me,
Tell you the real story,
From underneath the spell.
You're so beautiful
And I wonder who you are
You're so beautiful
Like the sky beneath the stars
You're so beautiful
Di dee di, di
Still the mornin',
Is anyone awake?
Remember what it feels like,
To be okay with this.
With nowhere else to walk to,
The family if you have to,
I'm remembering this moment.
You're so beautiful (do, do, do, do, do)
And I wonder who you are
You're so beautiful (do, do, do, do, do)
Like the sky beneath the stars
You're so beautiful (do, do, do, do, do)
Di dee di, di
When the smoke clears,
Feels like it's going to explode, here.
In a word,
I'll keep tryin', I'll keep tryin'.
Do, do, do, do, do, do
(3x)
Beautiful
And I wonder who you are
Beautiful
Like the sky beneath the stars
Beautiful
(Do, do, do, do, do, do)
Like the sky beneath the stars
Beautiful
(Do, do, do, do, do, do)
Like the painting of your car
Beautiful
(Do, do, do, do, do, do)
Beautiful
(Do, do, do, do, do, do)
