Located along the Caspian Sea above Iran, Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan and its largest city. The financial center for the old Soviet Empire, this 1,500-year-old metropolis once produced half of the world's oil supply. Twenty years after the fall of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan is now emerging from the shadows of Russian rule. The Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center ( Heydər Əliyev Mərkəzi) - is a cultural complex constructed in Baku, Azerbaijan. The complex is designed by renowned Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid. The Cultural Center will house a conference hall with 3 auditoriums, a library and a museum.
Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center occupies the area of 57,519 sq m rising to a height of 22m. The proposal for the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center envisions a fluid form which emerges by the folding of the landscape's natural topography and by the wrapping of individual functions of the Center. All functions of the Center, together with entrances, are represented by folds in a single continuous surface. This fluid form gives an opportunity to connect the various cultural spaces whilst, at the same time, providing each element of the Center with its own identity and privacy. As it folds inside, the skin erodes away to become an element of the interior landscape of the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center.
The immateriality of a building that varies between white, whiter, and whitest—depending on how the sun strikes its radial surfaces—seems weightless, releasing visitors from gravitational obligations. As an object, the building is subjective, provoking strong feelings cued by the physics of suspending gravity.
The main building of the Cultural Center consists of three parts: Museum of Heydar Aliyev, exhibition centers and "Auditorium"

As part of the former Soviet Union, the urbanism and architecture of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan on the Western coast of the Caspian Sea, was heavily influenced by the planning of that era. Since its independence in 1991, Azerbaijan has invested heavily in modernising and developing Baku's infrastructure and architecture, departing from its legacy of normative Soviet Modernism.
Zaha Hadid Architects was appointed as design architects of the Heydar Aliyev Center following a competition in 2007. The Center, designed to become the primary building for the nation's cultural programs, breaks from the rigid and often monumental Soviet architecture that is so prevalent in Baku, aspiring instead to express the sensibilities of Azeri culture and the optimism of a nation that looks to the future.

Heydar Alirza oghlu Aliyev or Geidar Aliev (Azerbaijani: Heydər Əlirza oğlu Əliyev, Russian: Гейда́р Али́евич Али́ев, Geidar Aliyevich Aliyev; 10 May 1923 – 12 December 2003), also spelled Haydar Aliev or Geidar Aliev was the third President of Azerbaijan for the New Azerbaijan Party from October 1993 to October 2003, when his son Ilham Aliyev succeeded him. From 1969 to 1982, Aliyev was also the leader of Soviet Azerbaijan, effectively dominating the political life of Azerbaijan for many years. His personality cult has developed in Azerbaijan following his death.
Career in the Soviet era
Early life
Many of the details of Aliyev's early life are obscure. According to his website, he was born in Nakhchivan City. After graduating from Nakhchivan Pedagogical School, from 1939 to 1941 Aliyev attended the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute (now the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy), where he studied architecture. In 1949 and 1950, he studied at the USSR MGB Officer Corps Qualifications-Raising School. Aliyev's official biography also stated that he studied at Baku State University, graduating with a degree in history in 1957. According to American journalist Pete Earley, Aliyev first attended the Ministry of State Security Academy in Leningrad, graduating in 1944.

Zaha Hadid
Dame Zaha Mohammad Hadid, DBE (Arabic: زها حديد Zahā Ḥadīd; born 31 October 1950) is an Iraqi-British architect. In 2004 she became the first woman recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. She received the Stirling Prize in 2010 and 2011. In 2012 she was made a dame. In 2014 the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre, designed by her, won the Design Museum Design of the Year Award, making her the first woman to win the top prize in that competition. In 2015 she became the first woman to be awarded the RIBA Gold Medal in her own right.
Her buildings are distinctively neofuturistic, characterised by the "powerful, curving forms of her elongated structures" with "multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry to evoke the chaos of modern life". She is currently professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in Austria.
Early life and education
Hadid was born on 31 October 1950 in Baghdad. She grew up in one of Baghdad's first Bauhaus-inspired buildings during an era in which "modernism connoted glamour and progressive thinking" in the Middle East.

The Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center ( Heydər Əliyev Mərkəzi) - is a cultural complex constructed in Baku, Azerbaijan. The complex is designed by renowned Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid. The Cultural Center will house a conference hall with 3 auditoriums, a library and a museum.
Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center occupies the area of 57,519 sq m rising to a height of 22m. The proposal for the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center envisions a fluid form which emerges by the folding of the landscape's natural topography and by the wrapping of individual functions of the Center. All functions of the Center, together with entrances, are represented by folds in a single continuous surface. This fluid form gives an opportunity to connect the various cultural spaces whilst, at the same time, providing each element of the Center with its own identity and privacy. As it folds inside, the skin erodes away to become an element of the interior landscape of the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center.
The immateriality of a building that varies between white, whiter, and whitest—depending on how the sun strikes its radial surfaces—seems weightless, releasing visitors from gravitational obligations. As an object, the building is subjective, provoking strong feelings cued by the physics of suspending gravity.
The main building of the Cultural Center consists of three parts: Museum of Heydar Aliyev, exhibition centers and "Auditorium"

The concert devoted to the life and creativity of Nizami Ganjavi in Paris
A concert devoted to the 870th anniversary of Azerbaijan's genius of poet Nizami Ganjavi was organized at the Cultural Centre of Azerbaijan in Paris, with organizational support from the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and assistance by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in France, November 13, 2013. A concert program comprised of romances and songs composed by Azerbaijani composers to Nizami Ganjavi's poems was presented to the audience.

The Discovery Channel and was hosted by architect Danny Forster who travel to the biggest country within the Caucasus region in Eurasia, the Republic of Azerbaijan, to go behind the construction scenes of Baku’s ambitious projects; the beautiful Flame Tower complex and stunning Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre.
Azerbaijan’s Amazing Structures - Build It Bigger
After many years of Soviet occupation, the republic of Azerbaijan is attempting to reinvent its city beyond the traditional architecture. Using their six billion dollar annual reconstruction along with 500 latest improvements, Forster visits the building sites of the huge Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre and also the Baku Flame Towers on Baku, to understand about the engineering systems for these types of structures.
Azerbaijan’s Amazing Structures - Build It Bigger
Haydar Aliev Cultural Centre will provide a primary new site of the event as well as landmark structure for Baku. Devoted to the previous president of Azerbaijan, this Cultural Centre will probably have a convention hall, a museum, an auditorium and restaurants. Flame Towers of Baku was influenced by long history of fire worshipping by the people of Azerbaijan. The three towers will serve as an eternal flame for a today’s Baku.

In the film, the history of the World War 2nd is looked at from completely new standpoint – a battle for oil.
With the timing of 52 minutes, the colour documentary’s shooting took place in the course of 14 months. While working on the documentary “Targeting Baku. How Hitler Lost the Battle for Oil”, 200-hour video material, as well as numerous photos and other documents were examined in archives of Azerbaijan, Germany, the Great Britain, France and Russia. In the film, video materials reflecting different battle scenes - so far not shown - are presented in a restored colour format.
