It is the first capital of Saudi Arabia: the town of Najad arose from the sands three centuries ago.
It fell to the Ottoman Empire's grip after Ibrahim Basha besieged the town with the marching Turkish army. For this, he was awarded Mecca and all that it stands as a prize for sacking al- Diriyah.
"After the collapse of the state, Al-Diriyah was neglected and its residents abandoned it. They then lived in a primitive manner until the 1950s," said Emir Sultan Bin Selman.
Al-Diriyah fell and rose from the sands three times, and here it is rising again for the fourth time. But this time it is a different rebirth. It is the revival of history not by rewriting its chronicles, but by introducing history as a genuine part of the present.
"It is not about restoration, it is a about the human being," said the Emir.
Al-Diriyah was built from mud and thatch and weaved the historical events that changed the face of the region. The Muhammad Bin Saud Palace emerged at the hands of the master builder, Al Najdi Bin Hazeem.
"This palace is considered to be one of the military fortresses of al-Diriyah because it was called the compartment of Omar Bin Saud.
The fortress is built on a stone base, which made it resilient to the enemy's attacks during the war," said Dr. Al Maghnem.
Building a town in an empty space is an easy task compared to building a city on the ashes of clashing swords, loud calls to prayer, and the cries of horses.
This is why rebuilding al-Diriyah was not an easy task, taking into consideration the incidents where wisdom mingled with blood and poetry with struggling bodies that collapsed to the ground.
Al- Diriyah is part of an entity and is not only a set of buildings and filming sites.
The story of these entities has not been told yet.
It is the first real union in the Arab world because it was founded on diversified principles and cultures.

Its founder has passed away, but with new head Patrik Schumacher at the helm, Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) appears to be taking on as many new projects as it ever has. The firm recently announced that it's going to build an oasis-inspired Urban Heritage Administration Centre in Diriyah, near Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The result of an architectural competition launched last year, the Urban Heritage Administration Centre will measure 8,780 sq m (94,507 sq ft) and is part of a larger project to preserve the UNESCO World Heritage Site's rich history.
The building will serve as head office of the Heritage Museum and include a permanent exhibition gallery, library, lecture hall, and educational facilities, in addition to a scientific institution for conducting field research and documentation of nearby archaeological sites.
The Urban Heritage Administration Centre will measure 8,780 sq m (94,507 sq ft)
Like Hadid's Bee'ah headquarters, the building's design is inspired by the desert landscape. The local rammed-earth architecture is also referenced, though it still showcases Hadid's signature futuristic curves that we've come to expect.
The Urban Heritage Administration Centre will feature a double-skin facade to help shelter the interior from the harsh desert sun. The outer facade's skin will be perforated to allow a degree of natural light inside without increasing solar heat gain too much. The atrium is arranged around a large water feature and the firm says the building features four green "oases" (presumably lush garden spaces).
There's no word yet on when construction is expected to begin or be completed.

Diriyah
Diriyah (Arabic: الدرعية), formerly romanized as Dereyeh and Dariyya, is a town in Saudi Arabia located on the north-western outskirts of the Saudi capital, Riyadh. Diriyah was the original home of the Saudi royal family, and served as the capital of the Emirate of Diriyah under the first Saudi dynasty from 1744 to 1818. Today, the town is the seat of the Diriyah Governorate, which also includes the villages of Uyayna, Jubayla, and Al-Ammariyyah, among others, and is part of Ar Riyad Province.
The Turaif district in Diriyah was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.
Location
The ruins of the old city of Diriyah lay on either side of the narrow valley known as Wadi Hanifa, which continues southwards through Riyadh and beyond. Consisting almost entirely of mud-brick structures, the ruins are divided into three districts, Ghussaibah, Al-Mulaybeed, and Turaif, set on top of hills overlooking the valley. Of the three, Turaif is the highest, and its bottom is easily accessible to tourists by foot. Part of the city wall, running along the edges of the wadi and also made of mud-bricks, are still extant along with some short observation towers.

Zaha Hadid
Dame Zaha Mohammad Hadid, DBE (Arabic: زها حديد Zahā Ḥadīd; born 31 October 1950) is an Iraqi-British architect. In 2004 she became the first woman recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. She received the Stirling Prize in 2010 and 2011. In 2012 she was made a dame. In 2014 the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre, designed by her, won the Design Museum Design of the Year Award, making her the first woman to win the top prize in that competition. In 2015 she became the first woman to be awarded the RIBA Gold Medal in her own right.
Her buildings are distinctively neofuturistic, characterised by the "powerful, curving forms of her elongated structures" with "multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry to evoke the chaos of modern life". She is currently professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in Austria.
Early life and education
Hadid was born on 31 October 1950 in Baghdad. She grew up in one of Baghdad's first Bauhaus-inspired buildings during an era in which "modernism connoted glamour and progressive thinking" in the Middle East.

Its founder has passed away, but with new head Patrik Schumacher at the helm, Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) appears to be taking on as many new projects as it ever has. The firm recently announced that it's going to build an oasis-inspired Urban Heritage Administration Centre in Diriyah, near Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The result of an architectural competition launched last year, the Urban Heritage Administration Centre will measure 8,780 sq m (94,507 sq ft) and is part of a larger project to preserve the UNESCO World Heritage Site's rich history.
The building will serve as head office of the Heritage Museum and include a permanent exhibition gallery, library, lecture hall, and educational facilities, in addition to a scientific institution for conducting field research and documentation of nearby archaeological sites.
The Urban Heritage Administration Centre will measure 8,780 sq m (94,507 sq ft)
Like Hadid's Bee'ah headquarters, the building's design is inspired by the desert landscape. The local rammed-earth architecture is also referenced, though it still showcases Hadid's signature futuristic curves that we've come to expect.
The Urban Heritage Administration Centre will feature a double-skin facade to help shelter the interior from the harsh desert sun. The outer facade's skin will be perforated to allow a degree of natural light inside without increasing solar heat gain too much. The atrium is arranged around a large water feature and the firm says the building features four green "oases" (presumably lush garden spaces).
There's no word yet on when construction is expected to begin or be completed.

This UNESCO world Heritage Site, is extremely damaged through neglect. It is slowly being restored to it's original state. Old Dir'Aiyah is the ancestral home of the al-Sauds and the cradle of Riyadh’s history. Found perched on a hill overlooking Wadi Hanifa in the northwestern outskirts of Riyadh, the area is steeped in ancient history. Once the capital of Riyadh, Old Dir'Aiyah is full of mud houses, walls and ancient palaces which have a tale or two to tell.
