So what is it about this island that keeps them coming back? It’s year-round sunshine. It’s a home away from home, where everyone speaks English and all of the restaurants serve British staples. Or an adventure holiday for hikers, cyclists and speleologists (that’s people who really dig caves!). Tenerife has two peak seasons: between December and February for winter sun - the weather is moderate and the island is fully set for tourists at this time of year. Summer season is from May to October and it’s when prices are at their highest. Out of season prices are lower, but the resorts will be quieter, with fewer shops open. Tenerife is easy enough to get to. About a four and a half hour flight from London and even the timezone is the same as at home. Flights can be anything from as little as £40 in March to nearly £300 at peak season in July, sometimes more. The south of the island is home to the main resorts - Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. Both very popular with Brits and quite lively, yet also family-friendly. Los Gigantes is popular with ex-pats and is slightly more relaxed and has very authentic volcanic black sand. The town of Santa Cruz is home to theatres, art galleries, architecture and fine-dining, green parks and is, in general, a bit more cultured. The interior is where you’re more likely to find the real Tenerife and get to experience a more authentic way of life. You’ll find fewer amenities here and English is likely to be a little broken but know that you’re only ever an hour or so from the familiar coastal towns. A major tourist attraction here is Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain. It’s a beautiful mountain to climb and costs €27 per person for a cable car. Bus transfers to your hotel from the airport are often included in the price of your holiday. A taxi, however, is more comfortable and quicker but it will be more expensive. For travelling beyond your hotel though, hire a car. European brands like Europcar and Avis are available at Tenerife airport. The lesser-known and slightly cheaper brand, Cicar, provided a service that was easily as good as any of the larger brands. Don’t forget - you drive on the right. The currency is Euros. A lot of places will accept card payment but it’s a good idea to have cash on you. A pint of beer in a bar in Tenerife can cost you less than €2 if you go for local beers. Wine is really cheap. Happy hour wine can be as little as €1.50. But if you buy at the supermarket, it’s laughable it’s so inexpensive. Restaurants serve lunch from 1 to 4pm, with dinner service starting at 6 and closing as late as 11 in the evening. Tipping is not compulsory but it’s certainly not bad manners to tip either. Tenerife is not known for being unsafe. It has low crime rates, however it’s always wise to exercise common sense. Watch out for pickpockets but mainly, behave as you would at home and absolutely buy travel insurance. Tenerife is a great island, that has loads to offer. It’s safe as long as you exercise common sense and it is a holiday destination that we highly recommend.
