I use the Audio Technica AT2020 XLR because I wanted to be able to record music occasionally. If you do not need that then you could just go straight for the USB version and wouldn’t need the phantom power or extra cables. We began renting a new home last fall where the property had not been taken care of at all by the previous tenant. Weeds were chest high all over, and I killed them and hoped to clean the yard up this spring, but over the fall and winter, bad company arrived. Gophers are completely destroying this home owners back yard and I've made it my mission to destroy them before they cause any real damage like chewing through pipes, cable lines, or anything else that might be buried in their way.
In this video I show my attempt to use a nifty little poison applicator that dispenses poison right into their tunnels with ease.

http://bukaymedia.com Ever wonder why fish-eating herons and egrets are often seen standing in fields? This video provides some clues. This Great Blue Heron caught and killed four gophers in a row without a miss! Two gophers were swallowed and two were left uneaten. The first gopher was quite large and took some effort and lubrication from a water puddle to swallow. Herons have been known to choke to death while trying to swallow large prey, but not this time. A few days earlier, I was fortunate to film a much smaller sized egret catching a large gopher and struggling for about 9 minutes to swallow it! This video is at http://youtu.be/EqpKf_PXgjI. I was amazed that the egret's skinny neck could eventually stretch enough to pass the large gopher!
I was surprised to see the heron continue to hunt and kill more gophers than it ate. I suspect that it enjoyed hunting for fun as well as for food. I filmed the heron for about 90 minutes in the late afternoon. I don't know how many gophers the heron may have caught before I arrived at the scene.
The heron struck the gophers so hard that they appeared to die very quickly after the first blow. Gopher #4 was struck only once; and then it was quickly dropped to the ground. The heron watched it for about 15 minutes, as if to see if it moved, and then walked away without eating the dead gopher. The heron appeared to continue to hunt for more gophers as darkness fell. I got cold and went home.
This heron could easily get a job in backyards plagued with gophers!
I filmed this event on March 17, 2012 at Miller Knox Regional Park in Pt. Richmond, CA, along the San Francisco Bay Trail after several days of heavy rains. The gophers on this fateful day may have been more vulnerable than usual due to partial flooding of their burrows after the recent rains. I used a Panasonic GH2 camera to capture the footage.

The Victor Black Box Gopher Trap, available online and usually at your local hardware store (Home Depot Etc.) Is the best way I have found to reliably deal with a gopher problem relatively quickly. I have tried all the other traps, including the cinch traps, and the easy set variety. This by far is impressive in it's results. I think it's likely because, if you bury it properly, making sure no light is getting through, they don't know it's there, smell the veggie, and spring the trap!

Gopher
Pocket gophers, commonly referred to as gophers, are burrowing rodents of the family Geomyidae. There are approximately 35 species of gopher living in Central and North America. They are commonly known for their extensive tunneling activities. Gophers are endemic to North and Central America.
The name "pocket gopher" on its own may be used to refer to any of a number of genera within the family. These are the "true" gophers; however there are several ground squirrels in the distantly related family Sciuridae that are often mistakenly called gophers as well.
Description
Gophers weigh around 0.5 pounds (230 g), and are about 6–8 inches (150–200 mm) long in body length, with a tail 1–2 inches (25–51 mm) long. A few species reach weights approaching 1 kg (2.2 lb). Within any species, the males are larger than the females and can be nearly double their weight.
Their lifespan is normally one to three years assuming no diseases or predation. The maximum life span for the pocket gopher is approximately five years. Some gophers, such as those in the genus Geomys, have lifespans that have been documented as up to seven years in the wild.

We began renting a new home last fall where the property had not been taken care of at all by the previous tenant. Weeds were chest high all over, and I killed them and hoped to clean the yard up this spring, but over the fall and winter, bad company arrived. Gophers are completely destroying this home owners back yard and I've made it my mission to destroy them before they cause any real damage like chewing through pipes, cable lines, or anything else that might be buried in their way.
In this video I show my attempt to use a nifty little poison applicator that dispenses poison right into their tunnels with ease.

This Great Blue Heron caught and killed four gophers in a row without a miss! Two gophers were swallowed and two were left uneaten. The first gopher was quite large and took some effort and lubrication from a water puddle to swallow. Herons have been known to choke to death while trying to swallow large prey, but not this time. A few days earlier, I was fortunate to film a much smaller sized egret catching a large gopher and struggling for about 9 minutes to swallow it! This video is at http://youtu.be/EqpKf_PXgjI. I was amazed that the egret's skinny neck could eventually stretch enough to pass the large gopher!
I was surprised to see the heron continue to hunt and kill more gophers than it ate. I suspect that it enjoyed hunting for fun as well as for food. I filmed the heron for about 90 minutes in the late afternoon. I don't know how many gophers the heron may have caught before I arrived at the scene.
The heron struck the gophers so hard that they appeared to die very quickly after the first blow. Gopher #4 was struck only once; and then it was quickly dropped to the ground. The heron watched it for about 15 minutes, as if to see if it moved, and then walked away without eating the dead gopher. The heron appeared to continue to hunt for more gophers as darkness fell. I got cold and went home.
This heron could easily get a job in backyards plagued with gophers!
I filmed this event on March 17, 2012 at Miller Knox Regional Park in Pt. Richmond, CA, along the San Francisco Bay Trail after several days of heavy rains. The gophers on this fateful day may have been more vulnerable than usual due to partial flooding of their burrows after the recent rains. I used a Panasonic GH2 camera to capture the footage.

The Victor Black Box Gopher Trap, available online and usually at your local hardware store (Home Depot Etc.) Is the best way I have found to reliably deal with a gopher problem relatively quickly. I have tried all the other traps, including the cinch traps, and the easy set variety. This by far is impressive in it's results. I think it's likely because, if you bury it properly, making sure no light is getting through, they don't know it's there, smell the veggie, and spring the trap!
