The Great New England Hurricane of 1938 was one of the most destructive and powerful storms ever to strike Southern New England. This system developed in the far eastern Atlantic, near the Cape Verde Islands on September 4. It made a twelve day journey across the Atlantic and up the Eastern Seaboard before crashing ashore on September 21 at Suffolk County, Long Island, then into Milford, Connecticut. The eye of the hurricane was observed in New Haven, Connecticut, 10 miles east of Milford. The center made landfall at the time of astronomical high tide, moving north at 50 mph. Unlike most storms, this hurricane did not weaken on its way toward Southern New England, due to its rapid forward speed and its track. This kept the center of the storm over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream.
Sustained hurricane force winds occurred throughout most of Southern New England. The strongest winds ever recorded in the region occurred at the Blue Hill Observatory with sustained winds of 121 mph and a peak gust of 186 mph. Sustained winds of 91 mph with a gust to 121 mph was reported on Block Island. Providence, Rhode Island recorded sustained winds of 100 mph with a gust to 125 mph. Extensive damage occurred to roofs, trees and crops. Widespread power outages occurred, which in some areas lasted several weeks. In Connecticut, downed power lines resulted in catastrophic fires to sections of New London and Mystic. The lowest pressure at the time of landfall occurred on the south side of Long Island, at Bellport, where a reading of 27.94 inches was recorded. Other low pressures included 28.00 inches in Middletown, Connecticut and 28.04 inches in Hartford, Connecticut.
The hurricane produced storm tides of 14 to 18 feet across most of the Connecticut coast, with 18 to 25 foot tides from New London east to Cape Cod. The destructive power of the storm surge was felt throughout the coastal community. Narragansett Bay took the worst hit, where a storm surge of 12 to 15 feet destroyed most coastal homes, marinas and yacht clubs. Downtown Providence, Rhode Island was submerged under a storm tide of nearly 20 feet. Sections of Falmouth and New Bedford, Massachusetts were submerged under as much as 8 feet of water. All three locations had very rapid tides increased within 1.5 hours of the highest water mark.
Rainfall from this hurricane resulted in severe river flooding across sections of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Three to six inches fell across much of western Massachusetts and all but extreme eastern Connecticut. Considerably less rain occurred to the east across Rhode Island and the remainder of Massachusetts. The rainfall from the hurricane added to the amounts that had occurred with a frontal system several days before the hurricane struck. The combined effects from the frontal system and the hurricane produced rainfall of 10 to 17 inches across most of the Connecticut River Valley. This resulted in some of the worst flooding ever recorded in this area. Roadways were washed away along with sections of the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad lines. The Connecticut River, in Hartford reached a level of 35.4 feet, which was 19.4 feet above flood stage. Further upstream, in the vicinity of Springfield, Massachusetts, the river rose to 6 to 10 feet above flood stage, causing significant damage. A total of 8,900 homes, cottages and buildings were destroyed, and over 15,000 were damaged by the hurricane. The marine community was devastated. Over 2,600 boats were destroyed, and over 3,300 damaged. Entire fleets were lost in marines and yacht clubs along Narragansett Bay. The hurricane was responsible for 564 deaths and at least 1,700 injuries in Southern New England. Damage to the fishing fleets in Southern New England was catastrophic. A total of 2,605 vessels were destroyed, with 3,369 damaged.

What's the difference between a hurricane and a tornado?
I'm Storm Shield Meteorologist Jason Meyers.
They're both a testament to Mother Nature's fury.
They both spin counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere.
And they both cause loss of life and property every year.
But they're far from the same thing.
For one, they form in very different ways.
Hurricanes form in warm ocean waters.
Moisture evaporates, rises, and begins to circulate.
As the storm grows, winds continue to speed up, and eventually, an eye forms around the middle.
Tornadoes, on the other hand, spawn from thunderstorms.
Rotation in different layers of the atmosphere within a thunderstorm create a funnel cloud that eventually reaches the ground.
Neither one of these processes are necessarily superior than the other, so this is a wash.
BUT - something we can compare: size.
Hurricanes can be hundreds of miles in diameter.
The biggest tornado ever recorded had a damage path of a little more than two and a half miles, but most are only three to four hundred yards.
In fact, tornadoes have been known to spawn INSIDE a hurricane!
Advantage - hurricane.
Now to round 2 - what about wind speed?
Hurricanes may be bigger, but tornadoes still pack a punch for their size.
Hurricane force winds range from 74 mph for a weak storm all the way up to 157 mph or more for a catastrophic category five.
A weak tornado starts out with winds around 40 mph, but an EF5 tornado has winds anywhere between 261 to 318 mph, much stronger than the strongest hurricane force winds.
Point goes to tornadoes - tie ball game.
Next round - what does more damage?
Tornadoes do all their damage using those extremely strong rotating winds.
Hurricanes, however, come with a triple threat.
They use strong winds, heavy rains, and storm surge - bringing huge waves crashing on shore, causing more flooding.
But even so, tornado and hurricane activity vary from year to year, but study after study has shown that on average, they are both equally damaging and deadly.
This one's a draw.
On to round 4 - who lasts longer?
Hurricanes last from a few hours to a few weeks, and the average falls somewhere in between.
Tornadoes are on the ground anywhere between a few seconds to maybe a few hours for a particularly strong storm, but the average is somewhere between two and fifteen minutes.
Hurricanes go the distance.
And this plays into warning time.
Since hurricanes take so long to form and do a lot of traveling before reaching land, people usually have plenty of notice to take cover or evacuate.
Watches are typically issued two days ahead of time, and warnings are usually issued 36 hours before anything happens.
Tornadoes are completely different.
Watches are sometimes issued an hour or two ahead of time, and the average warning time for a tornado warning is 13 minutes - just enough time to get to a safe place.
Tornadoes are definitely scarier for this reason.
And now we've ended up with a tie, and it's settled.
Neither of these storms are to be messed with.

Tropical cyclone
A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure center, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain. Depending on its location and strength, a tropical cyclone is referred to by names such as hurricane (/ˈhʌrᵻkən/ or /ˈhʌrᵻkeɪn/), typhoon /taɪˈfuːn/, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical depression, and simply cyclone.

The Great New England Hurricane of 1938 was one of the most destructive and powerful storms ever to strike Southern New England. This system developed in the far eastern Atlantic, near the Cape Verde Islands on September 4. It made a twelve day journey across the Atlantic and up the Eastern Seaboard before crashing ashore on September 21 at Suffolk County, Long Island, then into Milford, Connecticut. The eye of the hurricane was observed in New Haven, Connecticut, 10 miles east of Milford. The center made landfall at the time of astronomical high tide, moving north at 50 mph. Unlike most storms, this hurricane did not weaken on its way toward Southern New England, due to its rapid forward speed and its track. This kept the center of the storm over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream.
Sustained hurricane force winds occurred throughout most of Southern New England. The strongest winds ever recorded in the region occurred at the Blue Hill Observatory with sustained winds of 121 mph and a peak gust of 186 mph. Sustained winds of 91 mph with a gust to 121 mph was reported on Block Island. Providence, Rhode Island recorded sustained winds of 100 mph with a gust to 125 mph. Extensive damage occurred to roofs, trees and crops. Widespread power outages occurred, which in some areas lasted several weeks. In Connecticut, downed power lines resulted in catastrophic fires to sections of New London and Mystic. The lowest pressure at the time of landfall occurred on the south side of Long Island, at Bellport, where a reading of 27.94 inches was recorded. Other low pressures included 28.00 inches in Middletown, Connecticut and 28.04 inches in Hartford, Connecticut.
The hurricane produced storm tides of 14 to 18 feet across most of the Connecticut coast, with 18 to 25 foot tides from New London east to Cape Cod. The destructive power of the storm surge was felt throughout the coastal community. Narragansett Bay took the worst hit, where a storm surge of 12 to 15 feet destroyed most coastal homes, marinas and yacht clubs. Downtown Providence, Rhode Island was submerged under a storm tide of nearly 20 feet. Sections of Falmouth and New Bedford, Massachusetts were submerged under as much as 8 feet of water. All three locations had very rapid tides increased within 1.5 hours of the highest water mark.
Rainfall from this hurricane resulted in severe river flooding across sections of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Three to six inches fell across much of western Massachusetts and all but extreme eastern Connecticut. Considerably less rain occurred to the east across Rhode Island and the remainder of Massachusetts. The rainfall from the hurricane added to the amounts that had occurred with a frontal system several days before the hurricane struck. The combined effects from the frontal system and the hurricane produced rainfall of 10 to 17 inches across most of the Connecticut River Valley. This resulted in some of the worst flooding ever recorded in this area. Roadways were washed away along with sections of the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad lines. The Connecticut River, in Hartford reached a level of 35.4 feet, which was 19.4 feet above flood stage. Further upstream, in the vicinity of Springfield, Massachusetts, the river rose to 6 to 10 feet above flood stage, causing significant damage. A total of 8,900 homes, cottages and buildings were destroyed, and over 15,000 were damaged by the hurricane. The marine community was devastated. Over 2,600 boats were destroyed, and over 3,300 damaged. Entire fleets were lost in marines and yacht clubs along Narragansett Bay. The hurricane was responsible for 564 deaths and at least 1,700 injuries in Southern New England. Damage to the fishing fleets in Southern New England was catastrophic. A total of 2,605 vessels were destroyed, with 3,369 damaged.

I'm Storm Shield Meteorologist Jason Meyers.
They're both a testament to Mother Nature's fury.
They both spin counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere.
And they both cause loss of life and property every year.
But they're far from the same thing.
For one, they form in very different ways.
Hurricanes form in warm ocean waters.
Moisture evaporates, rises, and begins to circulate.
As the storm grows, winds continue to speed up, and eventually, an eye forms around the middle.
Tornadoes, on the other hand, spawn from thunderstorms.
Rotation in different layers of the atmosphere within a thunderstorm create a funnel cloud that eventually reaches the ground.
Neither one of these processes are necessarily superior than the other, so this is a wash.
BUT - something we can compare: size.
Hurricanes can be hundreds of miles in diameter.
The biggest tornado ever recorded had a damage path of a little more than two and a half miles, but most are only three to four hundred yards.
In fact, tornadoes have been known to spawn INSIDE a hurricane!
Advantage - hurricane.
Now to round 2 - what about wind speed?
Hurricanes may be bigger, but tornadoes still pack a punch for their size.
Hurricane force winds range from 74 mph for a weak storm all the way up to 157 mph or more for a catastrophic category five.
A weak tornado starts out with winds around 40 mph, but an EF5 tornado has winds anywhere between 261 to 318 mph, much stronger than the strongest hurricane force winds.
Point goes to tornadoes - tie ball game.
Next round - what does more damage?
Tornadoes do all their damage using those extremely strong rotating winds.
Hurricanes, however, come with a triple threat.
They use strong winds, heavy rains, and storm surge - bringing huge waves crashing on shore, causing more flooding.
But even so, tornado and hurricane activity vary from year to year, but study after study has shown that on average, they are both equally damaging and deadly.
This one's a draw.
On to round 4 - who lasts longer?
Hurricanes last from a few hours to a few weeks, and the average falls somewhere in between.
Tornadoes are on the ground anywhere between a few seconds to maybe a few hours for a particularly strong storm, but the average is somewhere between two and fifteen minutes.
Hurricanes go the distance.
And this plays into warning time.
Since hurricanes take so long to form and do a lot of traveling before reaching land, people usually have plenty of notice to take cover or evacuate.
Watches are typically issued two days ahead of time, and warnings are usually issued 36 hours before anything happens.
Tornadoes are completely different.
Watches are sometimes issued an hour or two ahead of time, and the average warning time for a tornado warning is 13 minutes - just enough time to get to a safe place.
Tornadoes are definitely scarier for this reason.
And now we've ended up with a tie, and it's settled.
Neither of these storms are to be messed with.

TAMPA – Hurricane Hermine is now just hours away from landfall along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Bands of heavy rain have already moved inland and conditions will only continue to deteriorate through tonight as damaging winds and life-threatening storm surge flooding increase. Tornadoes will also be a threat.
Hurricane warnings continue for a swath of north Florida, extending inland to include the city of Tallahassee. This means hurricane-force winds (at least 74 mph) are expected for a period of time in the warned area. Various tropical storm warnings also continue from parts of Florida to North Carolina.
Hermine will likely become a non-tropical low by this weekend and will hover near or off the Northeast seaboard, potentially resulting in strong winds, coastal flooding and other impacts. A tropical storm watch is now in effect as far north as coastal parts of New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland as well as the Virginia Tidewater since the low may still have significant impactsHurricane Hermine was centered about 85 miles south of Apalachicola, Florida, as of Thursday late afternoon.
Hermine will likely be the state’s first hurricane landfall since Hurricane Wilma in 2005.
Yesterday, Donna Brazile, the new DNC Chair, appeared on ABC's "This Week" and declared that pay for play like "someone who is a donor...saying I want access" is just an attempt to "criminalize behavior that is normal." Specifically, when asked about pay for play allegations against the Clinton Foundation, Brazile responded as follows:
"First of all, Martha, the way I look at it, I’ve been a government official. So, you know, this notion that, somehow or another, someone who is a supporter, someone who is a donor, somebody who’s an activist, saying I want access, I want to come into a room and I want to meet people, we often criminalize behavior that is normal. And I don’t see what the smoke is."
12) The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East. 13) Then I saw three impure spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14) They are demonic spirits that perform signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty.

Hurricane Betsy was the first tropical cyclone in the Atlantic Basin to cause at least $1 billion (1965 USD) in damage. The third tropical cyclone, second named storm, and second hurricane of the 1965 Atlantic hurricane season, Betsy developed on August 27 in an area of disturbed weather east of the Windward Islands. Forming as a tropical depression, it tracked generally west-northward until crossing on August 28. Thereafter, it tracked north-northwestward. By August 29, the depression strengthened into Tropical Storm Betsy. The storm then rapidly intensified and became a Category 1 hurricane later that day. Betsy executed a small cyclonic loop on August 30 and August 31, followed by a turn to the west on September 1. Significant intensification resumed on September 1, and by the following day, Betsy was a Category 3 hurricane. By late on September 3, Betsy became a Category 4 hurricane. While northeast of the Bahamas, Betsy became tracking erratically and executed another cyclonic loop, starting on September 4. The storm steadily weakened, and was briefly downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane early on September 6. However, the storm promptly re-strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane. Betsy then tracked southwestward and then westward through the Bahamas. By early on September 8, Betsy made landfall on Key Largo as a Category 3 hurricane. Betsy entered into the Gulf of Mexico and re-strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane on September 9. While approaching the Gulf Coast of the United States, Betsy peaked slightly below the threshold for Category 5 hurricane status. However, further intensification was halted after Betsy made landfall in Grand Isle, Louisiana later on September 9. Once inland, the storm rapidly weakened, and became extratropical over Ohio less than four days later.
