The Atlas Mountains is a mountain range which stretches across northwestern Africa extending about 2,500 km (1,600 mi) through Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. The highest peak is Jebel Toubkal, with an elevation of 4,167 metres (13,671 ft) in southwestern Morocco. The Atlas ranges separate the Mediterranean and Atlantic coastlines from the Sahara Desert. The population of the Atlas Mountains is mainly Berbers. The terms for 'mountain' in some Berber languages are adrar and adras, believed to be cognate with the toponym.
The mountains are home to a number of plant and animal species unique in Africa, often more like those of Europe; many of them are endangered and some have already gone extinct. Examples include the Barbary macaque, the Atlas bear (Africa's only species of bear; now extinct), the Barbary leopard, the Barbary stag, Barbary sheep, the Barbary lion (extinct in the wild), the Atlas Mountain badger, the North African elephant (extinct), the North African aurochs (extinct), Cuvier's gazelle, the Northern bald ibis, dippers, the Atlas mountain viper, the Atlas cedar, the European black pine, and the Algerian oak.

Travel video about destination Morocco. Casablanca is the largest city in Morocco, has the most important harbour in North Africa and is gateway to the magic of the Orient. In the Koran it says: ‘And Allah’s Throne Was On The Water !’ Thus inspired, the Grand Mosque was built on Casablanca’s shoreline. This monumental building was designed to accommodate 105,000 believers and its tall minaret dominates the city’s skyline. More than twelve million people helped finance this ‘Eighth Wonder Of The World’ which involved 90 engineers and 30,000 craftsmen and artists. Lying northwards along the Atlantic coast, is Rabat, Morocco’s capital and home to its government and royal family. The King’s Palace, the Palais Royal, is a town in itself. Kasbah de Toubkal has a trekking lodge in the picturesque Azzaden Valley and the 5-hour walk to get there is nothing short of a spectacular adventure. 'Magic' is the word that comes to mind. Five hours feels like five days: you leave this century behind and emerge in a biblical world. The trekking lodge is a box of mud and stone on a rocky outcrop. Outside, it's rugged, raw and authentic. Inside, it's simple, stylish and surprisingly luxurious. Mohammed (a popular name) is your host. He shows you to the Hamam, he provides Djelabas to wear for dinner and he cooks delicious Berber food such as Chicken and Apricot Tagine for dinner. No wonder Martin Scorsese chose these mountains to depict Tibet. When you wake up in the morning, with the sun rising over snow capped peaks, it feels...

The flat valley of Ait Bouguemez in the Jbel M'Goun National Park has been catching lots of attention from trekkers looking for something off the beaten path in Morocco. Similar to the view of Mount Toubkal while hiking in the High Atlas Mountains, the Bouguemez Valley is richly diverse in its agriculture and people. Old strong-fort houses align the hillsides while farmers thresh corn with their work mules.
